A power upgrade of existing 8 kW solid-state driver amplifier is required for the acceleration of high intensity proton beams on the J-PARC 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron. The development of a 25 kW amplifier with gallium nitride (GaN) HEMTs, based on 6.4 kW modules is on going. The combiner is a key component to achieve such a high output power over the wide bandwidth required for multi-harmonic rf operation. This paper presents preliminary design of the combiner. The circuit simulation setup and results, including the realistic magnetic core characteristics and frequency response of the cable are reported.

In the Tono Geoscience Center, Japan Atomic Energy Agency, investigation of deep underground environments for R&D program related to the geological disposal of High-Level Radioactive Waste has been performed by using various dating systems including an AMS system. In response to the increasing demand for our AMS measurements especially from a newly established R&D program supporting development of technology for geological disposal of HLW, a state-of-the-art multi-nuclide AMS system was installed. This system is equipped with a 300 kV AMS. The system has capability to measure four nuclides: carbon-14, beryllium-10, aluminium-26 and iodine-129. The system structure and features, as well as the results of performance test will be presented.

Determination of $$^{135}$$Cs/$$^{137}$$Cs isotopic ratio in soil collected near Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station through mass spectrometry

Determining the completeness of nuclear reactor decommissioning is an important step in safely utilizing nuclear power. For example, $$^{137}$$Cs from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) accident can be treated as background radioactivity, so determining the origin of $$^{137}$$Cs is essential. To accomplish this, measuring the $$^{135}$$Cs/$$^{137}$$Cs isotope ratio can be useful, so this study optimized a solvent extraction method, with calix[4]arene-bis(t-octylbenzo-crown-6) [BOBCalixC6] in 1-octanol, to purify radioactive Cs, radiocesium, from a solution of major environmental soil elements and mass spectrometry interference elements. This optimized method was applied to Cs purification in soil samples (40 g), and the final solutions contained a total of 10$$mu$$g/ml of the major soil elements and ng/ml concentrations at most of interfering elements. Soil samples collected near the FDNPS were then purified, and the $$^{135}$$Cs/$$^{137}$$Cs isotope ratios were measured, using both thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) and triple quadrupole induced coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-QQQ). The results of each of these measurements were compared, and we found that Cs isotope ratios obtained by TIMS were more precise, by an order of magnitude, while the ICP-QQQ results possessed good abundance sensitivities. A slightly higher $$^{135}$$Cs/$$^{137}$$Cs ratio in the northwest area of the FDNPS was observed, while other areas exhibited similar values, all within the measurement error range, which indicated different origins of radiocesium. These results agreed with previously reported $$^{134}$$Cs/$$^{137}$$Cs activity distributions, suggesting that this ratio may be useful in identifying radiocesium origins for evaluating future nuclear reactor decommissions.

Thermally altered subsurface material of asteroid (162173) Ryugu

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

JAXA has been investigated the effect of the shielding material for dosimeters in the ISS Russian segment under the ALTCRISS project. The PADLES package is a passive dosimeters which usually consists of two types of passive and integrating dosimeters, a CR-39 plastic nuclear track detector and a thermoluminescence dosimeter. In the ALTCRISS experiments, both tissue-equivalent material CR-39 PNTDs and NAN-JAERI were enclosed in the PADLES packages as radiators for CR-39 to precisely measure a personal exposed doses. We compared the doses obtained by PADLESs with or without the PEs, and with or difference of the two tissue-equivalent materials. The results of space radiation measurements of the ALTCRISS project Phase 1 to 4 using the PADLES system will be reported in this time: Phase 1 experiments was from December 2005 to April 2006, Phase 2 was from April to September 2006, phase 3 was from Sep 2006 to April 2007, and Phase 4 was conducted from May to October 2007.

The decomposition of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) at initial concentrations of 4.5-18.0 ppmv in air was studied under electron-beam (EB) irradiation. Doses to decompose 90% of input DMS were 2.5 kGy for 4.5 ppmv, 3.4 kGy for 10.6 ppmv, and 3.9 kGy for 18.0 ppmv. HCOOH, (CH$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$SO, and trace CH$$_{3}$$OH and (CH$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$SO$$_{2}$$ were produced as irradiation products in addition to CO$$_{2}$$ and CO. Application of an O$$_{3}$$ decomposition catalyst to an irradiated sample gas led to an enhancement in the oxidation of DMS and its products into CO$$_{2}$$ and the decomposition of O$$_{3}$$. For 10.6 ppmv DMS/air, the mineralization ratio increased from 41% via only EB irradiation to 100% via the combination treatment at 6.3 kGy. The yield of CO$$_{2}$$ to CO$$_{x}$$ increased from 5.3% to 87.6% by combination with catalytic oxidation. This combination treatment enables the irradiation energy used to deodorize gas streams containing DMS to be reduced.

This paper presents recent results of ITER activities on Vacuum Vessel (VV), blanket, limiter, and divertor. Major results can be summarized as follows. (1) The VV design is being developed in more details considering manufacturing and assembly methods, and cost. Incorporating manufacturing studies being performed in cooperation with parties, the regular VV sector design has been nearly finalized. (2) The procurement allocation of blanket modules among 6 parties was fixed and the blanket module design has progressed in cooperation with parties. Fabrication of mock-ups for prequalification testing is under way and the tests will be performed in 2007-2008. (3) The divertor activities have progressed with the aim of launching the procurement according to the ITER project schedule.
