in the superconducting (SC) state by using Knight shift measurements for a magnetic field
along the
axis, which is the magnetic easy axis of UTe
. Although a tiny anomaly ascribed to the SC diamagnetic effect was observed just below the SC transition temperature
, the
-axis Knight shift in the SC state shows no significant decrease, following the extrapolation from the normal-state temperature dependence. This indicates that the spin susceptibility is nearly unchanged below
. Considering the previous Knight shift results for
and
, the dominant SC state is determined to be
in the spin-triplet pairing, which is consistent with the spin anisotropy in the normal state. The present result shows that UTe
is a spin-triplet superconductor with spin degrees of freedom.

Terahertz and infrared spectroscopy is one of the powerful ways to elucidate the structures and vibrational modes of molecular clusters. We review an experimental apparatus for absorption spectroscopy in an ultra-high vacuum covering the wavenumber range of 60-7000 cm
, from the viewpoints of vacuum-, low-temperature-, and spectroscopy-techniques. We also introduce the terahertz and infrared spectrum of D
O clusters isolated in an Ar matrix measured with this apparatus.

Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:6.44(Chemistry, Physical)We have established an apparatus for terahertz and mid-infrared spectroscopy in an ultrahigh vacuum and have measured absorption spectra of D
O clusters trapped in solid Ar. To assign terahertz absorption peaks due to the D
O dimer, trimer, and tetramer, the dependence of the spectrum on the annealing temperature and D
O dilution was analyzed. The assignment was also examined by ab initio calculations with use of the ONIOM method, where flexibility of surrounding Ar atoms was systematically incorporated. We identified all of the intermolecular fundamentals of the dimer and those with significant intensities of the trimer and tetramer, whose structural symmetries were revealed to be broken down. After isolating the D
O clusters in solid Ar, we sublimated only Ar atoms to leave behind matrix-sublimation ice, which was found to be amorphous- or crystal-like depending on the formation conditions: the dilution and sublimation-temperature. Since the crystallinity got higher with raising the dilution and sublimation-temperature, the diffusion of the D
O monomer on the surface of sublimating solid Ar was found to be crucial to the crystallization of the sublimation ice.

Te-NMR studies on a newly discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe
. Using a single crystal, we have measured the
Te-NMR Knight shift
and spin-lattice relaxation rate
for fields along the three orthorhombic crystal axes. The data confirm a moderate Ising anisotropy for both the static (
) and dynamical susceptibilities (
) in the paramagnetic state above about 20 K. Around 20 K, however, we have observed a sudden loss of NMR spin-echo signal due to sudden enhancement of the NMR spin-spin relaxation rate
, when the field is applied along the easy axis of magnetization (=
axis). This behavior suggests the development of longitudinal magnetic fluctuations along the
axis at very low frequencies below 20 K.

Prototype of the middleware for Grid project promoted by national institutes in Japan has been developed. Key technologies that are indispensable for construction of virtual organization were already implemented onto the prototype of middleware and examined in practical computer/network system from a view point of availability. In addition several kinds of scientific applications are being executed on the prototype system. It seems that successful result in the implementation of those technologies such as security infrastructure, component programming and collaborative visualization in practical computer/network systems means significant progress in Science Grid in Japan.

Recently, Ran et al. reported evidence for superconductivity in the uranium-based heavy fermion material UTe
, exhibiting the rather high transition temperature of 1.6 K. The ground state of UTe
is paramagnetic, not ferromagnetic. However, the compound still exhibits a very large and anisotropic upper critical field H
, exceeding the Pauli limit along the three principal axes, similar to the ferromagnetic superconductors, UCoGe and URhGe. Field-induced metamagnetic transition and re-entrant superconducting behaviour have been reported under strong magnetic fields around 35 T, when a magnetic field was applied along the orthorhombic hard-magnetization b-axis. In this study, we have performed Te-NMR measurements on a newly discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe
. Our NMR data confirm a moderate Ising anisotropy for both the static (K) and dynamical susceptibilities (1/
) in the paramagnetic state above about 20 K.

Nano-sized molecular clusters have been intensively investigated in a spectroscopic way to reveal the nature of intermolecular interaction. Compared with the infrared (IR) range, only a few spectral measurements in the terahertz (THz) range have been reported, so that the assignment of the vibrational mode to THz absorption was not established even for the water dimer. In the present study, we constructed an experimental apparatus for THz-IR absorption spectroscopy in an ultrahigh vacuum and measured spectra of deuterated-water clusters formed in solid Ar to identify the THz absorption peaks of the dimer, trimer, and tetramer.
