In the current study, coupling between chemical, mass-transport and mechanical, so-called non-linear processes that control concrete degradation and crack development were investigated by coupled numerical models. Application of such coupled numerical models allows identification of the dominant non-linear processes that will control long-term concrete degradation and crack development in a TRU waste repository.

Times Cited Count:4 Percentile:35.96(Crystallography)Details are presented of the development of a coupled modeling simulator for assessing the evolution in the near-field of a geological repository for radioactive waste disposal where concrete is used as a backfill. The simulator uses OpenMI, a standard for exchanging data between simulation software programs at run-time, to form a coupled chemical-mechanical-hydrogeological model of the system. The approach combines a tunnel scale stress analysis finite element model, a discrete element model for accurately modeling the patterns of emerging cracks in the concrete, and a finite element and finite volume model of the chemical processes and alteration in the porous matrix and cracks in the concrete, to produce a fully coupled model of the system. Combining existing detailed simulation software in this way with OpenMI has the benefit of not relying on simplifications that might be necessary to combine all of the modeled processes in a single piece of software.

level. Simulation for the lower radiation power fractions of 0.8-0.9 was also performed, and physics issues of the short super-X divertor are discussed.

Raman and visible absorption spectra of rare earth trihydrides have been measured at high pressures, in order to investigate the structural and electronic phase transitions. The successive phase transitions of hcp-intermediatefcc phase were confirmed by Raman measurements. From the visible absorption experiments, the band gap energy was estimated. The gap closure was found to occur on the transition from the intermediate to the fcc phase.

This report describes the results of the conceptual design study of the SlimCS fusion DEMO reactor aiming at demonstrating fusion power production in a plant scale and allowing to assess the economic prospects of a fusion power plant. The design study has focused on a compact and low aspect ratio tokamak reactor concept with a reduced-sized central solenoid, which is novel compared with previous tokamak reactor concept such as SSTR (Steady State Tokamak Reactor). The reactor has the main parameters of a major radius of 5.5 m, aspect ratio of 2.6, elongation of 2.0, normalized beta of 4.3, fusion out put of 2.95 GW and average neutron wall load of 3 MW/m
. This report covers various aspects of design study including systemic design, physics design, torus configuration, blanket, superconducting magnet, maintenance and building, which were carried out increase the engineering feasibility of the concept.

rays. The lower five nodes of shoots elongating from the irradiated buds were cut one by one, and new shoots were allowed to grow. This procedure was repeated twice and flower color mutation was investigated. Chimeric structure was analyzed by comparing the flower color of mutants to that of plants regenerated from the roots. All the flower color mutants induced with
rays were periclinal chimeras. In contrast, some mutants obtained with ion beams had the same flower color as that of the plants derived from the roots. This suggests that they were solid mutants, where both LI and LIII tissues were derived from the same mutated cell.

The Raman results revealed the presence of an intermediate phase at 9-24 GPa between the low-pressure hexagonal and high-pressure fcc phases. The Y-framework structure and the positions of interstitial H atoms are changed on the transition to the intermediate phase. The results of the absorption measurements demonstrate that the optical band gap begins to close in response to the phase transition.

A short super-X divertor is proposed as a new option for fusion divertor, where field line length from the divertor null to the outer target (L//div) was largely increased (more than two times) in a similar size of conventional divertor. Physics and engineering design studies have progressed. Minimal number of the divertor coils (1 or 2) were installed inside the toroidal field coil (TFC), i.e. interlink-winding (interlink). Arrangement of the poloidal field coils (PFCs) and their currents were determined, taking into account of the engineering design such as vacuum vessel and the neutron shield structures, and maintenance scenario of the divertor and blankets. Divertor plasma simulation showed that large radiation region is produced between the super-X null and the target, and the plasma temperature becomes low (1-2 eV) both at the inner and outer divertors, i.e. fully detached plasma was obtained efficiently.
