We present the newly developed electrical resistance measurement technique for metal hydrides compressed in high-pressure H and the first successful simultaneous measurements of electrical resistance and X-ray diffraction of FeH at high pressures and low temperatures. The electrical resistivity showed a sharp increase with the formation of iron-hydride FeH () at 3.5 GPa. The '-phase of FeH was found to be metallic up to 25.5 GPa. The vs. curves up to 16.5 GPa approximately follow Fermi-liquid law below 25 K. However, was found to be better fitting at 25.5 GPa. This change can be related to the previously reported ferromagnetism collapse at corresponding pressures.

Having trivalent character and distorted cubic fcc structure, the 4/ structure is the -phase which has been commonly observed for other rare-earth metal hydrides. Our study clearly demonstrates that EuH is no longer an "irregular" member of the rare earth metal hydrides.

In this paper, FY2009 results of the COMPASS code development are reported. Validation calculations for melt freezing and blockage formation, eutectic reaction of metal fuel, duct wall failure (thermal-hydraulic analysis), fuel pin failure and disruption and duct wall failure (structural analysis) are shown. Phase diagram calculations, classical and first-principles molecular dynamics were used to investigate physical properties of eutectic reactions: metallic fuel/steel and control rod material/steel. Basic studies for the particle method and SIMMER code calculations supported the COMPASS code development. COMPASS is expected to clarify the basis of experimentally-obtained correlations used in SIMMER. Combination of SIMMER and COMPASS will be useful for safety assessment of CDAs as well as optimization of the core design.

Dispersion and freezing of molten core material was calculated by the COMPASS code to compare with the experimental data of GEYSER. Molten core material flowed up with freezing on the pipe inner surface. As a molten pool behavior, CABRI-TPA2 experiment was analyzed, where a sphere of solid steel was surrounded by solid fuel. Power was injected to cause melting and boiling of the steel sphere. SCARABEE-BE+3 test was analyzed by COMPASS as a validation of failure of duct walls.

A computer code, named COMPASS, is being developed for various complex phenomena of core disruptive accidents (CDAs) in sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). The COMPASS is designed to analyze multi-physics problems involving thermal hydraulics, structure and phase change, in a unified framework of the MPS (Moving Particle Semi-implicit) method. The project has been carried out by six organizations for five years from FY2005 to FY2009. In this paper, the outcomes of the project in FY2007 are presented. Three validation calculations were completed by following the validation plan: melt freezing and blockage formation, molten pool boiling, and duct wall failure. The COMPASS code development was supported by basic studies of the numerical method, material science for eutectic reaction of the metal fuel, and SIMMER-III analyses.

The electrical resistivity increased with applying pressure up to 10 GPa and showed a maximum which accompanied with the structural transition of metal lattice from hcp to fcc structure. In fcc phase the resistivity decreased significantly, however the value still remained larger by 4 orders of magnitude that that of pure yttrium metal. We could not confirm the insulator to metal transition up to 23 GPa. The resistivity showed another maximum in the large pressure region 40 60 GPa without the structural phase transition of metal lattice.

JAERI and JNC have started a JAERI-JNC joint research program in fiscal year 2003, which has been aimed for efficient progress and synergistic effect on the research activities in both Institutes. This study has been chosen one of the joint research themes because it has been our common objective in the field of structural materials of FBR and LWR components. The purpose of the study is to clarify damage mechanism of structural materials used under irradiation, and then to develop the methods for damage evaluation and detection in earlier stage of progressing process of damage. In fiscal year 2004 and 2005, micro-corrosion measurement, electrochemical corrosion test and leakage magnetic flux density measurement apparatuses were developed and equipped in two hot facilities and irradiated and unirradiated crept specimens, irradiated high purity model austenitic stainless alloys were also prepared and applied to this study. These apparatuses and specimens were used for damage evaluation, and these feasibilities for nuclear power plant materials were studied.
