First observation of the de Haas-van Alphen effect and Fermi surfaces in the unconventional superconductor UTe$$_2$$

de Haas-van Alphen oscillation was successfully observed in an unconventional superconductor UTe$$_2$$ using high-quality single crystals. From this observation, Fermi surfaces of this compound were determined to be cylinders elongated along the c-direction, in consistent with theoretical expectation. However, the extremely large cyclotron effective masses ranging 32 to 57 m$$_0$$, in consistent with the electronic specific heat, far exceed calculated values.

To investigate the normal-state magnetic properties of UTe$$_2$$ under pressure, we perform $$^{125}$$Te nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements up to 2 GPa. Below 1.2 GPa, the b-axis NMR Knight shift shows a broad maximum at the so-called $$T_{chi, max}$$ on cooling, which is consistent with the magnetization measurement under pressure. $$T_{chi, max}$$ decreases with increasing pressure and disappears at the critical pressure $$P_c$$= 1.7 GPa, above which superconductivity is destroyed.

ウラン系の強磁性超伝導体で議論されてきた、「強磁性ゆらぎによるスピン三重項超伝導対の形成」および「強磁性ゆらぎを介した磁場による対形成引力の制御」というコンセプトがUTe$$_2$$においても成り立つことを期待させる。しかしその一方、$$_2$$では静的な強磁性秩序は存在せず、低温の磁気状態がこれまでのウラン系強磁性超伝導体にどこまで近いのかという点については疑問を持たれていた。実際、最近の中性子散乱実験では、比較的高温側から反強磁性に近いq=0.57という波数を持った磁気ゆらぎの発達が示されている。本研究では$$^{125}$$Te-NMR実験により低温で非常に遅いゆっくりとした揺らぎが発達する様子を捉えることに成功した。このことはこの系の低温における強い相関の発達を示唆している。

We report the results of $$mu$$SR and $$^{29}$$Si NMR measurements carried out on the cubic chiral magnet EuPtSi. Our zero-field $$mu$$SR experiments revealed the development of critical slowing down of Eu spin fluctuations over a relatively wide critical region above $$T_N$$. We also found from $$^{29}$$Si NMR that the spin fluctuations are strongly suppressed by magnetic field in the paramagnetic state above 20K. These characteristic spin dynamics observed over a wide region of temperature and magnetic field suggest the presence of magnetic frustration in the spin system. Such frustration would underlie the mechanism stabilizing the short-period skyrmion lattice observed in this compound.

UTe$$_2$$ is a recently discovered promising candidate for a spin-triplet superconductor. In contrast to conventional spin-singlet superconductivity, spin-triplet superconductivity possesses spin and angular momentum degrees of freedom. We previously reported that the shoulder signal appears in NMR spectra below the superconducting (SC) transition temperature $$T_c$$ in $$H//b$$, and a slight decrease in the Knight shift along the $$b$$ and $$c$$ axes ($$K_{rm b}$$ and $$K_{rm c}$$, respectively) below $$T_c$$ at a low magnetic field $$H$$. Although the decrease in $$K_{rm c}$$ vanished above 5.5 T, the decrease in $$K_{rm b}$$ was independent of $$H$$ up to 6.5 T. To clarify the origin of the shoulder signal and the trace of the decrease in $$K_{rm b}$$, we compared the $$^{125}$$Te-NMR spectra obtained when $$H//b$$ and $$H//c$$ and measured the $$^{125}$$Te-NMR spectra for $$H//b$$ up to 14.5 T.

Anisotropic response of spin susceptibility in the superconducting state of UTe$$_2$$ probed with $$^{125}$$Te-NMR measurement

To investigate spin susceptibility in a superconducting (SC) state, we measured the $$^{125}$$Te-NMR Knight shifts at magnetic fields ($$H$$) up to 6.5 T along the $$b$$ and $$c$$ axes of single-crystal UTe$$_2$$, a promising candidate for a spin-triplet superconductor. In the SC state, the Knight shifts along the $$b$$ and $$c$$ axes ($$K_{rm b}$$ and $$K_{rm c}$$, respectively) decreased slightly, and the decrease in $$K_{rm b}$$ was almost constant up to 6.5 T. The reduction in $$K_{rm c}$$ decreased with increasing $$H$$, and $$K_{rm c}$$ was unchanged through the SC transition temperature at 5.5 T, excluding the possibility of spin-singlet pairing. Our results indicate that spin susceptibilities along the $$b$$ and $$c$$ axes slightly decrease in the SC state in low $$H$$, and the $$H$$ response of SC spin susceptibility is anisotropic on the $$bc$$ plane.

Single-crystal growth and magnetic properties of NdPt$$_2$$B are reported on a enantiopure crystal. We observed multiple phase transitions at 9.5 and 11 K under zero magnetic field. Nontrivial magnetic phase diagram demonstrates the competitive interactions in this system.

We have performed the $$^{125}$$Te-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement in the field along the $$b$$ axis on the newly discovered superconductor UTe$$_2$$, which is a candidate of a spin-triplet superconductor. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature 1/$$T_{1}T$$ abruptly decreases below a superconducting (SC) transition temperature $$T_{rm c}$$ without showing a coherence peak, indicative of UTe$$_2$$ being an unconventional superconductor. It was found that the temperature dependence of 1/$$T_{1}T$$ in the SC state cannot be understood by a single SC gap behavior but can be explained by a two SC gap model. The Knight shift, proportional to the spin susceptibility, decreases below $$T_{rm c}$$, but the magnitude of the decrease is much smaller than the decrease expected in the spin-singlet pairing. Rather, the small Knight-shift decrease as well as the absence of the Pauli-depairing effect can be interpreted by the spin triplet scenario.

最近新たに発見された重い電子系超伝導体UTe$$_2$$$$^{125}$$Te-NMRによる研究について報告する。単結晶試料を用い$$^{125}$$Te-NMRのKnight shift $$K$$およびスピン-格子緩和率$$1/T_1$$の測定を行なった。その結果、20K以上の常磁性相において静的および動的帯磁率のどちらもが弱いIsing型の異方性を持つことを確認した。一方、20K以下の低温ではa軸方向に磁場をかけた場合にスピン-スピン緩和率$$1/T_2$$の強い発散が見られることがわかった。このことは低温でa軸方向に強い縦型のスピン揺らぎが発達していることを示唆している。

Physical properties of the single-crystalline U$$_2$$Ir$$_3$$Si$$_5$$, a new ternary uranium compound with U$$_2$$Co$$_3$$Si$$_5$$-type orthorhombic structure, are investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and electrical resistivity. This compound undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition followed by a first-order phase transition at lower temperature. A possible mechanism of the first-order transition is the occurrence of a magnetic magnetic quadrupolar order, resulting from the quasi-one-dimensional uranium zigzag chain.

Dc magnetization measurements have been performed on the orthorhombic Ising ferromagnet Urge. We observed a clear first-order reorientation transition with a small hysteresis and estimated the tricritical point to be around 4 K. The magnetization and the thermal expansion data indicate the presence of a characteristic temperature of about 1 K.

UPtGeはUCoGeおよびURhGeと類似の結晶構造を持ち、ウラン系では唯一、サイクロイド型の特異な磁気秩序を示す。さらに強磁場磁化過程において多段の磁化異常が存在することが最近報告されている。磁気転移温度は50Kで、秩序したウランの磁気モーメントの大きさも大きく、UCoGeやURhGeよりも、ウランの5f電子はより局在的な性質を持っていると考えられる。一方、超伝導は今のところ見つかっていない。本研究では、UPtGeの単結晶を用いて角度方向分解Pt-NMR実験を行った。その結果、この系の磁気ゆらぎが得意な容易面XY型の異方性を持つことが明らかになった。これは強磁性超伝導体UCoGeやURhGeのIsing型の磁気揺らぎと大きく異なっている。

Low-energy quasiparticle excitations in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ were investigated by specific heat measurements as a function of temperature, magnetic field and its angle. Experimental results agree with the theoretical model for a superconducting gap with chiral $$d$$-wave symmetry.

Static dc magnetization measurements were performed for a heavy fermion superconductor UBe$$_{13}$$ single crystal. For the fields along the [100] and [110] directions of cubic lattice, a magnetic anomaly was found at a characteristic field $$H_{rm Mag}^{*}$$ within the superconducting mixed state. It was also found that magnetic anisotropy became more significant above this field. The present study shows that the thermodynamic property of superconductivity changes as a function of magnetic field.

Low-energy excitation in the superconducting state of UBe$$_{13}$$ were studied by means of specific-heat measurements in a rotating field. Quite unexpectedly, the magnetic-field dependence of specific heat is linear in field at low fields with an isotropic field-angle dependence. The observation implies that the gap is fully open over the Fermi surfaces, in contrast to the previous expectation.

Static DC magnetization measurements were performed in order to investigate magnetic response of the unconventional superconducting state of UBe$$_{13}$$. An unusual anomaly was observed inside the superconducting mixed state corresponding either to a peculiarity of superconducting diamagnetism or the anomalous vortex core structures.

Low-temperature specific heat measurements under magnetic field were performed on a single crystal UBe$$_{13}$$. The specific heat shows a $$T^3$$ behavior below $$sim$$0.7 $$T$$$$_{rm c}$$, where $$T$$$$_{rm c}$$ is the superconducting transition temperature, suggesting the existence of point nodes in the superconducting gap. Together with the isotropic behavior of the upper critical magnetic field, the symmetry of the Cooper paring is discussed.

Low-temperature specific heat and static dc magnetization measurements have been performed in the superconducting state of the heavy-fermion compound UBe$$_{13}$$. The superconducting phase diagram was obtained from these measurements. We obtained Ginzburg-Landau parameter as a function of temperature and showed that a paramagnetic effect is present down to 0.5 K.

Static dc magnetization measurements in the superconducting mixed state of a single crystal UBe$$_{13}$$ were performed by means of a capacitance Faraday-force method down to 0.24 K. Below the upper critical field $$B_{c2}$$, not only a peak effect but also an additional broad anomaly have been observed in magnetization curves. We report superconducting phase diagram of UBe$$_{13}$$ obtained by our magnetization measurements, including these anomalies.
