We report our experimental discovery of the transition temperature reaching 20 K in a Yb-based compound at ambient pressure. The Mn substitution at the Al site in an intermediate valence state of $$alpha$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ not only induces antiferromagnetic transition at a record high temperature of 20 K but also transforms the heavy-fermion liquid state in $$alpha$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ into a highly resistive metallic state proximate to a Kondo insulator.

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $$a_{mu}=(g-2)/2$$ and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $$d_{mu}$$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $$a_{mu}$$ and $$d_{mu}$$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon g-2 experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $$a_{mu}$$ is a statistical uncertainty of 450 parts per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $$1.5times10^{-21}$$ e$$cdot$$cm.

Development of radiation-resistant lighting

JAEA-Review 2010-065, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2009, P. 22, 2011/01

There are a lot of restrictions of electric installations in a high radiation environment. For example longevity of electric devices would be shortened remarkably in a high radiation environment. It becomes impossible also for lighting equipments to keep an original function under a high radiological environment due to deterioration of insulation resistance of ballasts and luminous flux decrease of lamps, etc. The authors developed radiation-resistant lighting. This research aims to verify those functionality and safety under $$gamma$$-ray irradiation conditions.

With using $$^{17}F$$ RNB from CRIB, proton inelastic scattering was observed. From this experiment, some resonance parameters have been deduced for the key reaction, $$^{14}O(alpha,p)^{17}F$$ at the explosive hydrogen burning stage in stars. Proton inelastic scattering of $$^{23}Mg$$ are also reported.
