Therefore, quantifying the C partitioning over a short period may provide crucial information for clarifying root-soil carbon metabolism. A non-invasive method for visualising the translocation of recently assimilated C into the root system inside the rhizobox was established using CO
labelling and the positron-emitting tracer imaging system. The spatial distribution of recent
C-photoassimilates translocated and released in the root system and soil were visualised for white lupin (
) and soybean (
). Our method enabled the quantification of the spatial C allocations in roots and soil, which may help to elucidate the relationship between C metabolism and nutrient cycling at specific locations of the root-soil system in response to environmental conditions over relatively short periods.

Cs inventories for the watersheds with the land use, soil components, topography, and water quality factors were assessed. We found that the topographic wetness index is significantly and positively correlated with the normalized dissolved
Cs concentration. Similar positive correlations have been found for European rivers because wetland areas with boggy organic soils that weakly retain
Cs are mainly found on plains. However, for small Japanese river watersheds, the building area ratio in the watershed strongly affected the dissolved
Cs concentration.

Twenty-one laboratories pre-concentrated three of 10 L samples by five different pre-concentration methods (prussian-blue-impregnated filter cartridges, coprecipitation with ammonium phosphomolybdate, evaporation, solid-phase extraction disks, and ion-exchange resin columns), and activity of radiocesium was measured. The z-scores for all of the Cs results were within
2, indicating that the methods were accurate. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) indicating the variability in the results from different laboratories were larger than the RSDs indicating the variability in the results from each separate laboratory.

Biotite inhibits radiocesium (RCs) transfer from soil to plants by two functions of selective adsorption of radiocesium (Cs) between layers (Cs adsorption ability) and K supply from between layers (K supply ability). However, it was difficult to distinguish between the two. In this study, the authors succeeded in preparing biotite in which both functions are variously different by preparing weathered biotite in which interlayer pottasium (K) was replaced with rubidium (Rb) to lose K supply ability. By systematically comparing these biotites, the authors clarified the effects of Cs adsorption ability and K supply ability on Cs transfer to plants.

Controlling factor of dissolved Cs concentrations in 66 in East Japan rivers was investigated. Dissolved
Cs concentrations decreased by one order of magnitude between 2012 and 2017. Normalized dissolved
Cs concentrations correlated well with building area ratios. Topographic wetness index generally predicted dissolved
Cs concentrations. The high concentration of dissolved
Cs in urban area cannot be explained by water quality condition.

In this study, we developed a new method to visualize and evaluate the movement of C-photosynthates into the root system and 11C-rhizodeposits released in the soil coupled with positional information using the positron-emitting tracer imaging system. A newly developed rhizobox was consisted of a square nylon mesh bag containing the root system and a pair of soil boxes, and it could be distinguishing the
C signal of soil from that of root. Test plants of white lupin (Lupinus albus) and soybean (Glycine max) were grown in the rhizobox, and fed
CO
as a pulse. Simultaneously, the behavior of 11C-photosynthates into the root system and the distribution of
C-rhizodeposits released in the rhizosphere soil were visualized.

To predict the behavior of particulate and dissolved radiocesium (Cs) in river water, some soil and land use categories in the watershed should be considered because these may affect the dissolved
Cs concentration. In this study, to investigate the factors that affect dissolved
Cs concentrations in Japanese rivers, we measured dissolved
Cs concentrations in 67 rivers under baseflow conditions 13-280 km from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in August and September 2017.
