The ion source is same as the J-PARC linac's, and the old 30-mA RFQ is replaced by a spare 50-mA RFQ, therefore, the beam energy is 3 MeV and the nominal beam current is 50 mA. The main purpose of this system is to test the spare RFQ, but also used for testing of various components required in order to keep the stable operation of the J-PARC accelerator. The accelerator has been already commissioned, and measurement programs have been started. In this paper, present status of this 3-MeV linac is presented.

We have constructed a linac for development of various accelerator components at J-PARC. The ion source is same as the J-PARC linac's, and the RFQ is a used one in the J-PARC linac. The beam energy is 3 MeV and nominal beam current is 30 mA. The accelerator has been already commissioned, and the first development program, laser-charge-exchange experiment for the transmutation experimental facility, has been started. In this paper, present status of this 3-MeV linac is presented.

We have used a beam scraper with the incident angle of 65deg to reduce the beam power deposition density in the MEBT between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC linac. The 65 scraper was irradiated by the H beam up to particle number of 1.47E22. We observed a lot of surface projections with several hundred micrometers high in the beam irradiation damage on the scraper by using the laser microscope. In order to study the limits of scrapers, we constructed a new 3 MeV linac at J-PARC. We will conduct the scraper irradiation test at the end of this year.

Two RF-deflecting cavities as a chopper and a beam scraper have been used in the MEBT1 between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC Linac. We replaced with a newly fabricated RF chopper to decrease beam loss for the operation with 50 mA. We installed two new scrapers to absorb the higher power of the deflected beam by the RF chopper. This paper describes the RF chopper system and beam irradiation test results of the scraper.

EDC test is a test method on the mechanical property of fuel cladding tube, and it focuses on the stress condition generated by PCMI under a RIA. We conducted EDC tests which simulate the mechanical conditions during a RIA by using the unirradiated cladding tubes which simulate hydride rim. Circumferential residual strains observed in post-test specimens tended to decrease with increasing the hydrogen concentration in the test cladding tubes and the thickness of the hydride rim. We also prepared RAG tube and performed EDC tests on it. It was observed that circumferential total strains at failure tended to decrease with increasing pre-crack depth on the outer surface of RAG tube specimen. We conducted biaxial stress tests by applying longitudinal tensile load onto RAG tube specimens. It was observed that circumferential total strains at failure under biaxial stress conditions tended to decrease compared to the results under uniaxial tensile condition.

Times Cited Count:6 Percentile:42.9(Physics, Nuclear)We performed a beam test of a new radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ III) for the beam current upgrade of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. First, the conditioning of RFQ III was conducted, and after 20 h of conditioning, RFQ III became very stable with a nominal peak power and duty factor of 400 kW and 1.5%, respectively. An off-line beam test was subsequently conducted before installation in the accelerator tunnel. The transmission, transverse emittance, and energy spread of the 50-mA negative hydrogen beam from RFQ III were measured and compared with simulation results. The experiment and simulation results showed good agreement; therefore, we conclude that the performance of RFQ III conforms to its design.

Two RF-deflecting cavities as a chopper and a beam scraper have been used in the MEBT between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC Linac. We plan to increase a peak beam current up to 50 mA by replacing an ion source and a RFQ after the summer shutdown in 2014. Beam loss occurs in the RF chopper for the 50 mA operation. Moreover, the beam scraper cannot fully stand the beam load with 50 mA, 0.5 ms, 3 MeV, and 25 Hz. We have studied the new RF chopper cavity by using HFSS code and the tandem scraper system with two scrapers.

Times Cited Count:15 Percentile:68.29(Physics, Nuclear)We performed a high-power test of a new radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ II) for the J-PARC linac. RFQ II was developed as a spare RFQ because the operating J-PARC RFQ has suffered from a sparking problem. First, the conditioning of RFQ II was carried out; after 50 h of conditioning, RFQ II became very stable with a nominal power and duty of 330 kW and 3%, respectively. Next the thermal properties were measured because the resonant frequency of RFQ II is tuned by changing the temperature of the cooling water. The frequency response was measured and compared to finite-element method simulation results, confirming that the simple two-dimensional model reproduces the experimental data well. The differences in the field distribution with changes in the rf loading and the cooling-water temperature were also measured, and no serious field distortion was observed. Therefore, we conclude that RFQ II can perform well as a high-power rf cavity.

The output energy of the J-PARC proton linac will be upgraded from 181 to 400 MeV in the next two years by adding high-b acceleration sections. The upgrade of the FPGA-based digital LLRF controller for the 400 MeV linac will be presented in this paper. This new LLRF controller works for both the 324-MHz low-b and 972-MHz high-b sections. Many functions have been added into the LLRF controller, such as (1) working for different RF systems, (2) gradually increasing the feedback gains in the feedback loop instead of fixed ones, (3) automatic chopped beam compensation, (4) automatically switching the beam loading compensation in accordance with different beam operation mode, (5) input RF-frequency tuning to match the RF cavities during RF start-up, and (6) auto-tuning of the RF cavity tuner by detecting the phase curve of the RF cavity during the field decay instead of the phase difference between the cavity input and output signals.

It is the world highest power oscillation 1 s. In addition to the carefully designed cavity and collector in view of thermal stress, an RF shield for the adjustment bellows, and a low-dielectric-loss DC break enabled this achievement. Power modulation technique by anode voltage control was improved to obtain high modulation frequency and 5 kHz has been achieved for NTM stabilizing experiments. Long pulse demonstration of 0.4 MW, 30 s injection to the plasma has been achieved with real time control of anode/cathode-heater. It has been confirmed that the temperature of cooled components were saturated and no evidence of damage were found. An innovative antenna having wide range of beam steering capability with linearly-moving-mirror concept has been designed for long pulse. Beam profile and mechanical strength analyses shows the feasibility of the antenna.

The electron cycrotron range of frequency (ECRF) system (3 MW 5 s at 110 GHz with 4 gyrotrons) will be upgraded to the system having 9 gyrotrons (7 MW 100 s at 110 GHz and 140 GHz) for JT-60SA (super advanced). For the reference antenna design having rotary mirrors, an effective and reliable method of mirror cooling without water is under consideration. As an alternative antenna design, a new concept with a mirror driven in the linear motion which eliminates the flexible tube for coolant supply is under development. The design study featuring beam profile calculation showed feasibility of the antenna in the 0.48 m 0.48 m port. On the gyrotron development, 1.5 MW, 1s has been achieved using SiN insulator instead of AlO. Improvement of the mode converter is in progress and the test aiming at 1 MW, 100 s oscillation will be started in March.

In JT-60SA, 7 MW of electron cyclotron heating and current drive will be performed with four units of 110 GHz and five units of 140 GHz electron cyclotron range of frequency (ECRF) systems. Transmission lines will be connected into four upper outer ports where quasi-optical antennas will be installed. Two types of antenna systems are being considered. One is a conventional type rotation antenna and the other is a new concept antenna which can control incident angle by a linearly driven mirror. Those antennas are now being evaluated from the view points of cooling structure, the range of incident angle and beam width. In addition, 1.5 MW for 1 s oscillation was carried out by one gyrotron of JT-60U ECRF system. Moreover, the present 110 GHz gyrotron will be improved which aims at the development of JT-60SA gyrotron. In this presentation, current status of design study for JT-60SA ECRF system and the latest results of the JT-60U ECRF system will be presented.
