At Materials and Life science experimental Facility (MLF) in J-PARC, a mercury target of an intense pulsed spallation neutron source is designed to be irradiated by 3 GeV and 1MW proton beams to provide high intensity neutron beams to a suit of neutron instruments. A unified mercury radioactivity monitor (UHAM) is installed to find an indication of failure of the mercury target and loop system by detecting radioactive materials leaked from the system with a gamma-ray energy analysis with Germanium semi-conductor detectors. It is composed of three units of sampling port and radiation monitors: 1) HAM for interstitial helium gas layer between the mercury vessel and surrounding water shroud of the mercury target, 2) CAM for atmosphere in the hot cell where the target loop is operated and 3) VAM for helium gas in the helium vessel where the target vessel is installed. Once any leakages of radioactive materials are detected, an alarm signal is issued immediately to the accelerator control system to stop beam operation. Software and hardware have been upgraded yearly. For example, two Ge detectors are used for HAM for redundancy, NaI Scintillation detectors are also used as supplemental for the Ge detector to keep availability of the system for high counting rate event. In addition, A gas monitor is equipped at CAM to detect tritium. Until now, several operation experiences could be obtained as the follwoing. 1) Xe-121 and Xe-123 gas could be detected at CAM. These radio-active gaseous radioactive nuclides are slightly leaked from cover gas of mercury target. 2) Humidity in the helium vessel could be detected at VAM, because detection of annihilation gamma-ray and N-15 were increased. 3) The detection of Ar-41 indicated the air mixing in helium atmosphere.

We observed that liquid iron contains 0.17(3) wt.% H at 3.4 GPa and 1400 K, indicating that liquid iron is hydrogenated in the magma ocean during core formation. For the hydrogen content in the liquid iron at the base of the magma ocean, we estimated that the outer and inner cores contain 0.60-0.72 and 0.30-0.44 wt.% H, corresponding to 70-85 and 1.9-2.7 times the mass of hydrogen in the ocean, respectively. This suggests that hydrogen can contribute more than half of the density deficit in the outer core. For the magma ocean equilibrating with the hydrogen-rich primary atmosphere, the study findings show that liquid iron plays a crucial role in transporting a large amount of hydrogen into the core.

by combining time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering with DFT-based theoretical modeling. The neutron measurements revealed a clear out-of-plane modulation of the low-energy magnetic intensity, with maxima at odd
positions, indicating robust antiferromagnetic correlations along the
axis. With increasing energy, this modulation gradually disappears, signaling a crossover from three-dimensional to nearly two-dimensional spin dynamics. Calculations based on a realistic three-dimensional electronic structure reproduce both the low-energy
modulation and its energy-dependent suppression. Our itinerant approach, built on a material-specific DFT-derived band structure, captures this three-dimensional-to-two-dimensional crossover without phenomenological tuning, thereby providing a stringent benchmark for realistic electronic-structure models of iron-based superconductors.

Accelerator cooling-water facility cannot prevent electrolytic corrosion because the systems consist of several different kinds of metals. We have confirmed that the electrolytic corrosion certainly occurs between oxygen-free copper and carbon steel, and cannot be suppressed by the rust inhibitor used so far. We have chosen a new rust inhibitor and confirmed that the new rust inhibitor can prevent the corrosion progression of carbon steel as well as oxygen-free copper. Moreover, using the new rust inhibitor brings about saving water and the cost reduction of the inhibitors.

Times Cited Count:0 Percentile:0.00(Robotics)We develop a test method to evaluate the vertical moving performance of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) in a narrow environment, specifically performance for ascending through a narrow aperture. This research aims to boost the UAS industry by pushing for the expansion of UAS use into various places and situations. UAS users should know whether the UAS performance is enough to achieve their objectives and what UAS suits them. However, discussing what/how much UASs can do is complex, especially in a place or situation affecting some UAS functions. Thus, the test method provides an easy-to-understand evaluation of UAS performance for mobility to access a destination in a narrow environment, even for UAS users without technical knowledge. To develop an acceptable test method for the UAS industry, we repeatedly held demonstrations and discussions with UAS manufacturers and users to incorporate their opinions from the early stages of this research. In addition, the experiments show that the test method appropriately indicates the difference in UAS performance. This paper describes the approach of UAS performance evaluation to promote the UAS industry, the development along with UAS users' opinions, and the result of the experiments to compare the type of UAS and consideration.
