The spectrum determination method (SDM) is the method to determine radioactivities by analyzing full spectral shape of $$beta$$- or $$gamma$$ rays through least-squares fitting by referring to standard $$beta$$- and $$gamma$$ spectra. In this paper, we have newly applied the SDM to a unified spectrum composed of two spectra measured with a Ge detector and a liquid scintillation counter. By analyzing the unified spectrum, uncertainties of deduced radioactivities have been improved. We applied this method to the unified spectrum including 40 radionuclides with equal intensities, and have deduced their radioactivities correctly.

In J-PARC LINAC, the vacuum system is in place to maintain an ultra-high vacuum in the beam transport line (LINAC to 3GeV RCS beam transportation line: L3BT) between the LINAC to the 3GeV synchrotron. The vacuum system is installed in the LINAC and L3BT buildings and consists of vacuum pumps, vacuum gauges, beam line gate valves (BLGVs), and other vacuum. In existing vacuum systems, vacuum equipment is controlled independently for each area, and vacuum equipment can be operated regardless of the status of adjacent areas. This makes it impossible to eliminate erroneous operation due to human error. In addition, when a vacuum deterioration occurs in the beam transport line, the vacuum deterioration ILK signal is transmitted to the BLGV relay unit via the MPS transmission signal, which causes the BLGVs to be forcibly closed. Because the ILK signal transmission range extends to all BLGVs in the L3BT, however, BLGVs in areas unaffected by vacuum deterioration are also forced to close. This could cause problems such as unnecessary open/close operations leading to more frequent maintenance cycles of the BLGVs. In addition, since the BLGV is operated using the MPS signal path, maintenance of the vacuum control system requires work involving the MPS signal path, making it difficult to maintain the vacuum control system alone and making the work complicated. To solve these problems, it is necessary to improve maintainability by separating the signal paths and automatically controlling BLGV separately. Therefore, the vacuum control system was modified and constructed with the aim of realizing a control system that takes into account the safety and efficient maintenance and operation of the L3BT vacuum system. This report summarizes the development and use of the L3BT vacuum system control system.

Previously we reported a simple algorithmic method of spectral determination method (SDM), which is based on the first principle that a $$gamma$$-ray spectrum obtained for a sample is a linear superposition of individual spectra of the radioactive nuclides included in the sample and demonstrated that the method is valid for $$gamma$$-ray determination. Here we apply it to the spectra obtained by liquid scintillation counter (LSC). In LSC measurements quenching is generally observed and we at first developed its correction method to standard spectra. The SDM code reported in the previous investigation is used to analyze the LSC spectra. Based on the analyses done by using the measured spectra, we concluded that the SDM method is valid in the LSC spectra similarly to the $$gamma$$-ray spectra studied in the previous investigation.

A flexible waste management system (FWM) is being developed to apply future MA partitioning and transmutation (P&T) technology to current HLLW. This FWM system will store high-level waste (HLLW) in granular form until MA partitioning and transmutation technology is realized. The feasibility of the main process was essentially confirmed by basic experiments and preliminary thermal analysis for granule production by rotary kiln from simulated HLLW and for temporary storage (50 years) of HLW granules at the HLW storage facility, respectively. The granule production experiments revealed that relatively large particles can be produced by the rotary kiln. The results of the thermal analysis showed that the small diameter canisters could be used to safely store the granules at a higher storage density than vitrified HLW. The effectiveness of the FWM system in terms of potential radiotoxicity and repository area was also evaluated, and it was shown that FWM can reduce these factors and has significant advantages in the disposal of HLW generated in current reprocessing plants. Since LWR fuel is stored for a long period of time in Japan and the operation of a reprocessing plant is expected to start soon, the FWM system is considered to be an effective system for reducing the environmental burden of HLW disposal.

The cluster structure of the neutron-rich isotope $$^{10}$$Be has been probed via the ($$p,palpha$$) reaction. The triple differential cross-section was extracted and compared to distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction calculations performed in a microscopic framework using the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-R$"o$pke wave function and the wave function deduced from Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics calculations. The remarkable agreement between calculated and measured cross-sections in both shape and magnitude validates the description of the $$^{10}$$Be ground-state as a rather compact nuclear molecule.

Small amounts of iron sulphide minerals are found in most rocks from the Earth's mantle and as inclusions trapped in natural diamonds. Hydrogen may dissolve into iron sulphide minerals under high pressures and temperature, but is most likely lost once pressure and temperature are removed. In this study, we determined deuterium contents in iron sulphide, held under high pressure and temperature conditions, using neutron diffraction measurements with 6-ram multi-anvil press at PLANET, J-PARC. Deuterium contents in iron sulphide were measured at high-P, up to 11.4 GPa and high-T to 1300 K in in situ neutron diffraction experiments. The total deuterium content increases with both P and T. The results are used to estimate hydrogen contents of iron sulphide minerals in the deep continental lithospheric mantle, which are found to be in the range 1700-2700 ppm. This corresponds to approximately 2-3 ppm of hydrogen in the bulk mantle.

Tracing magnetic atom diffusion with annealing at the interface between CoMn alloy and MnGa layer by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism

The magnetic atom diffusion at the interface between CoMn alloy and MnGa layer with annealing is studied using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) analysis. We found that the spins in bcc CoMn are coupled parallel to those in perpendicularly magnetized MnGa layer under the as-grown conditions, while the post annealing modulates the interfacial magnetic coupling to antiferromagnetic in Co. The elementspecific hysteresis curves at each absorption edge revealed the large coercive fields in Mn and Co through the exchange coupling with MnGa. After the annealing process, the changes of XMCD spectral line shapes are related to the interfacial reactions promoting the formation of Mn and Co$$_{2}$$MnGa layers, which is deduced from the analysis oftransmission electron microscopy. The interfacial diffusion of Mn atoms modulates the magnetic exchange coupling between Mn and Co sites and reverses the direction of perpendicular magnetization.

Spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectivity obtains multiple reflectivity curves from a single sample and a single beam source. We used the strong point of the technique to reveal that, although methylated-perhydropolysilazane-derived silica layer has a higher porosity near the interface with acrylic urethane resin, the resin did not permeate the pore network.

In the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, the purpose of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) is to accelerate a 1 MW, high-intensity proton beam. To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.
