Rare earths (4$$f$$) and actinides (5$$f$$) provide variety of interesting states realized with competing interactions between the increasing number of $$f$$ electrons. Since crystal field splitting of many-body $$f$$ electron system is smaller than the bandwidth, (1) high resolution experiments are needed, (2) essentially no clear spectrum with well defined peaks is expected in itinerant Ce and U compounds, and (3) Np and Pu is strictly regulated. Therefore, systematic research on magnetic excitations by neutron scattering experiments of localized compounds and rare earth iso-structural reference is useful. We describe the $$f$$ electron states of heavy electron compounds NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and actinide and rare earth based iso-structural family.

By means of inelastic neutron scattering, we measured magnetic excitations in a sizable single crystal of La$$_{1.7}$$Sr$$_{0.3}$$Cu$$_{0.95}$$Al$$_{0.05}$$O$$_{4}$$, which is an Al-substituted system of the heavily hole-doped cuprate system La$$_{2-x}$$Sr$$_{x}$$CuO$$_{4}$$ with an effective concentration of holes of $$X_{rm eff}$$ = 0.25.

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were carried out in order to study the $$f$$-electron states of NdPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$The CEF levels at 0K, 35.4K, 88.3K, 101.5K, and 198.8K were clarified from the excitation spectra. The $$Gamma_6$$ ground state contains the orbital with $$J_z=pm9/2$$ as a main component due to a large negative B$$_{20}=-1.4$$K, which is the origin of the strong uniaxial anisotropy. The estimated magnetic moment, the calculated susceptibility, magnetization curve, and specific heat are in good agreement with the experimental data. The existence of a common charge distribution with CePd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and PrPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$. Indicates that a localized character is important even in actinide-based iso-structural compounds as actually observed in UPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and also NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$, in which the valence crossover plays important role for the heavy fermion superconductivity.

Effect of electron correlations on spin excitation bandwidth in Ba$$_{0.75}$$K$$_{0.25}$$Fe$$_{2}$$As$$_{2}$$ as seen via time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering

We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to investigate the effect of electron correlations on spin dynamics in iron-based superconductor Ba$$_{0.75}$$K$$_{0.25}$$Fe$$_{2}$$As$$_{2}$$. Our INS data show a spin-wave-like dispersive feature, with a zone boundary energy of 200 meV. A first principles analysis of dynamical spin susceptibility, incorporating the mass renormalization factor of 3, as determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, provides a reasonable description of the observed spin excitations. This analysis shows that electron correlations in the Fe-3d bands yield enhanced effective electron masses, and consequently, induce substantial narrowing of the spin excitation bandwidth. Our results highlight the importance of electron correlations in an itinerant description of the spin excitations in iron-based superconductors.

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Neutron devices such as neutron detectors, optical devices including supermirror devices and $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters, and choppers are successfully developed and installed at the Materials Life Science Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Tokai, Japan. Four software components of MLF computational environment, instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and a database, have been developed and equipped at MLF. MLF also provides a wide variety of sample environment options including high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressures. This paper describes the current status of neutron devices, computational and sample environments at MLF.

Efficient extreme ultraviolet emission from one-dimensional spherical plasmas produced by multiple lasers

We demonstrate high conversion efficiency for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission at 6.5-6.7 nm from multiple laser beam-produced one-dimensional spherical plasmas. Multiply charged-state ions produce strong resonance emission lines, which combine to yield intense unresolved transition arrays in Gd, Tb, and Mo. The maximum in-band EUV conversion efficiency was observed to be 0.8%, which is one of the highest values ever reported due to the reduction of plasma expansion loss.

The efficiency of inelastic neutron scattering measurements using a chopper spectrometer can be markedly improved by utilizing multiple incident energies (Multi-Ei method). However, in conventional chopper systems, optimization of the experimental condition for all incident energies is absolutely impossible. We developed a new Fermi chopper with a supermirror-coated slit package in order to overcome the problem and experimentally demonstrated that the full optimization of the experimental condition for multiple incident energies is nearly achieved.

The paper describes developments of neutron scattering instruments in J-PARC neutron facility, which is a short pulse spallation source operated at a repetition rate 25 Hz and has a proton power 1 MW. New concept has been adopted to utilize high intensity coupled moderator even for a high resolution inelastic scattering instruments by taking a pulse shaping chopper system. Advanced technique has been also realized by taking an ability of event-recording system altogether with an improvement of a chopper system, realizing multi-Ei method. The paper also touches upon a general design concept for diffractometers in accordance with the source characteristics.

We performed inelastic neutron scattering on a powder sample of iron-based superconductor BaFe$$_2$$(As$$_{0.65}$$P$$_{0.35}$$)$$_2$$ with $$T_c$$ = 30 K. Although this system is expected to have line nodes in its superconducting order parameter, we have observed spin resonance at the same scattering vector as that appeared in the $$s_{pm}$$-wave iron-based superconductors without line nodes. Moreover, the resonance enhancement, which can be a measure of the area of sign reversal between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs), is comparable to those without line nodes. These facts indicate that the sign reversal between the FSs is still dominant in this system, and the line nodes should create only limited area of sign-reversal on a single FS. Hence the system can hold higher Tc than the other iron-based superconductors with nodal symmetry, such as LaFePO$$_{1-y}$$ and KFe$$_2$$As$$_2$$ ($$T_c <$$ 10 K).

High-rate crystallization of polycarbonate in spincast thin film

Surface morphology of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (BAPC) thin films with thickness ranging from 30 to 1000 nm on silicon substrates was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films were prepared by spincasting from 1,2-dichloroethane solutions of 0.25-5.0 wt % BAPC. Even though longer annealing than 250 h was necessary for complete crystallization for bulk BAPC, high crystallinity was observed for 30 nm thick film after annealing at 200 $$^{circ}$$C for 48 h in vacuum. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements showed that the free volume hole size in 30 nm thick film was larger than that of bulk at 200 $$^{circ}$$C. Comparison of the BAPC concentration in the precursor solution with the overlap concentration suggests that the high crystallinity of the 30 nm BAPC film is due to less entangled chains caused by rapid removal of the solvent from the dilute solution.

Our previous studies have shown that a series of partial peptides of a Plasmodium falciparum enolase have antigenic reactivity against patients' sera. Local modification of hardness in FeCu alloys by using swift heavy ion irradiation

Supersaturated Fe-1.2wt.%Cu alloys were irradiated with 200-MeV Xe and 200-MeV Au ions at elevated temperatures. To make an irradiated region and an unirradiated region in a specimen, a masking plate was put on the specimen during the irradiation. After the irradiation, the hardness was measured by using a conventional microhardness tester or a nano-indenter. We have found that the hardness only in irradiated region increases by the irradiation. The boundary of irradiated and unirradiated regions can be clearly identified by the difference in hardness. The present result implies that swift heavy ion irradiation can be used for the local modification of hardness in supersaturated alloys.

Recently, positronium (Ps) formation mechanism in the spur is becoming clarified. Blob model, the modified Spur model, proposed by Stepanov can give information of Ps formation time. Dauwe et al. showed that S(t) curve of PMMA observed by AMOC measurement could be fitted by the blob model. The young-age broadening was found and explained with the delayed slowing down of Ps by Stuttgart group. The delayed Ps formation was shown by Suzuki et al. especially at low temperatures, because positrons can diffuse long distance to find trapped electrons. According to the blob model, Ps formation even after long diffusion of positrons might be possible even at the room temperature. Now we are trying to obtain the experimental evidence of delayed Ps formation in spur process.
