This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $$a_{mu}=(g-2)/2$$ and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $$d_{mu}$$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $$a_{mu}$$ and $$d_{mu}$$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon g-2 experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $$a_{mu}$$ is a statistical uncertainty of 450 parts per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $$1.5times10^{-21}$$ e$$cdot$$cm.

We investigated the magnetization process of Fe (110) film using the field dependence of magnetic Compton scattering and M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy. From the magnetic Compton profiles, the spin and orbital magnetic moment specific magnetization versus magnetizing field curves were obtained. From the M$"o$ssbauer spectra, the angles between the magnetizing field and the magnetic moment were obtained. It was found that the magnetizing field dependence of the ratio between orbital moment and spin moment was related to the angles between the magnetizing field and the magnetic moment. We indicate that the magnetic field dependence of the orbital magnetic moment plays a role in the magnetization process.

Current status and future direction of full-scale vibration simulator for entire nuclear power plants

The Center for Computational Science and E-systems (CCSE) has been promoting researches and developments for the full-scale 3D vibration simulator of an entire nuclear power plant, which is a virtual plant vibration simulator on inter-connected supercomputers. Application example of the vibration simulator to High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) and recent progress of collaborative work for JST-CREST program "Multiscale and multiphysics earthquake-proof simulation" are shown. This year, we started to implement the analysis capability of fluid effects to the vibration simulator. We have presented a two-phase flow model for analyzing a sloshing and suggested importance of turbulent effect to estimate the flow impact on the structure more precisely.

The regenerative cooling combustion chamber of a liquid rocket engine is exposed to large temperature difference between the combustion gas and the coolant such as liquid hydrogen. It induces thermal stress, and strain is accumulated over cyclic firing tests in the chamber wall. To evaluate the strain and the deformation of chamber wall is important since the chamber life usually relates to such strain and deformation. The primary objective of the present study is to establish a method to obtain experimental data on strains and deformations for correlation with the numerical data. In this study, residual strains and radiographs of a combustion chamber were obtained by applying neutron diffraction method and neutron radiography. Furthermore, two-dimensional nonlinear finite element method (FEM) analyses were conducted to calculate the residual strain in the chamber wall. From data of strain measurements, the feasibility of neutron diffraction method for a combustion chamber was shown because the data from X-ray diffraction method and FEM analyses qualitatively corresponded with those from neutron diffraction method. Concerning neutron radiography, higher spatial resolution was necessary to observe chamber wall deformation.

Radiation-induced graft polymerization of styrene into poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) with 32% crystallinity was investigated with DSC, TGA, XRD, and ESR. Endothermic heats of melting of the original and styrene-grafted PEEK (grafted PEEK) films were similar, indicating the crystallinity was almost completely maintained up to a grafting degree of 51%. Lower glass transition temperature of the grafted PEEK film in the DSC, and the absence of an extra halo originating from amorphous polystyrene grafts in the XRD strongly indicate the grafting of styrene to crystalline PEEK films proceeded in the amorphous region of PEEK. This is probably because polystyrene grafts have hydrocarbon structures similar to a base PEEK polymer, resulting in compatibility to the amorphous phase of the PEEK films. The grafted PEEK films can be converted to PEEK-based electrolyte membranes by subsequent sulfonation, and had conductivity of more than 0.01 S/cm and exhibited higher water content above 100%.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

J-PARC is a large scale facility of the proton accelerators for the multi-purpose of scientific researches in Japan. This facility consists of three accelerators and three experimental stations. Now, J-PARC is under construction, and LINAC is operated for one year, 3GeV synchrotron has just started the commissioning in this October the 1st. The completion of this facility will be next summer. The control system of accelerators established fundamental performance for the initial commissioning. The most important requirement to the control system of this facility is to minimize the activation of accelerator devices. In this paper, we show that the performances of each layer of this control system have been achieved in the initial stage.

Zero-field muon-spin-relaxation measurements have been carried out for La$$_{2-x}$$Sr$$_x$$Cu$$_{1-y}$$Zn$$_y$$O$$_4$$ (LSCO)with $$y$$ = 0-0.10 in the overdoped regime up to $$x$$ = 0.30, in order to investigate whether the dynamical stripe correlations are pinned and stabilized even for the overdoped LSCO or not. It has been found that the Zn-induced slowing down of the Cu-spin fluctuations is weakened with increasing $$x$$ but takes place in the overdoped regime and disappears at $$x$$ = 0.30. This suggests that the stripe-pinning model holds good in the whole superconducting regime of LSCO and that there is no quantum critical point at $$x$$ $$sim$$ 0.19.

We report the first genome-wide identification and characterization of alternative splicing in human gene transcripts based on analysis of the full-length cDNAs. Applying both manual and computational analyses for 56 419 completely sequenced and precisely annotated full-length cDNAs selected for the H-Invitational human transcriptome annotation meetings, we identified 6877 alternative splicing genes with 18 297 different alternative splicing variants. A total of 37 670 exons were involved in these alternative splicing events. The encoded protein sequences were affected in 6005 of the 6877 genes. Notably, alternative splicing affected protein motifs in 3015 genes, subcellular localizations in 2982 genes and transmembrane domains in 1348 genes. Genome-wide annotations of alternative splicing, relying on full-length cDNAs, should lay firm groundwork for exploring in detail the diversification of protein function which is mediated by the alternative splicing variants.

The attractive concepts for Sodium-, lead-bismuth-, helium- and water-cooled FBRs have been created through using typical plant features and employing advanced technologies. Efforts on evaluating technological prospects of feasibility have been paid for these concepts. Also, it was comfirmed if these concepts satisfy design requierments of capability and performance presumed in the feasibilty study on commertialization of Fast Breeder Reactor Systems. As results, it was concluded that the selection of sodium-cooled reactor was most rational for practical use of FBR technologies in 2015.

Behavior of simulated spent fuel in subcritical water

Behavior of spent nuclear fuel in subcritical water was investigated to look at the feasibility of fission-products (FPs) separation without organic solvent. The study employed unirradiated UO$$_{2}$$ particles simulating spent fuel burned up to 45,000MWdt$$^{-1}$$, which includes FP elements in oxide form: Sr, Zr, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd and Sm. Also, alloy particles consisted of Mo, Ru, Rh and Pd were prepared to simulate the metallic phase of FP. 12.728 g of the fuel and 52 mg of the alloy were placed in a 10 ml pressure vessel, where subcritical water was fed. The temperature was 523, 573, 623 and 663K, while the pressure was kept at 29MPa. Dissolved fraction decreased with elevating temperature. It was found that more than 5% of Ba, Mo and Pr were respectively dissolved. The dissolved fraction of Sr and Rh were about 1%, and about 0.3% for Zr. La, Ce, Nd and Sm, indicated almost the same result as U, which was about 0.1%. It was suggested that the subcritical water could separate portion of FP. Further study would be carried out with smaller-sized fuel.
