Spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectivity obtains multiple reflectivity curves from a single sample and a single beam source. We used the strong point of the technique to reveal that, although methylated-perhydropolysilazane-derived silica layer has a higher porosity near the interface with acrylic urethane resin, the resin did not permeate the pore network.

We developed a spin-contrast-variation neutron powder diffractometry technique that extracts the structure factor of hydrogen atoms, namely, the contribution of hydrogen atoms to a crystal structure factor. Crystals of L-glutamic acid were dispersed in a dpolystyrene matrix containing 4-methacryloyloxy-2,2,6,6,-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO methacrylate) to polarize their proton spins dynamically. The intensities of the diffraction peaks of the sample changed according to the proton polarization, and the structure factor of the hydrogen atoms was extracted from the proton-polarization dependent intensities. This technique is expected to enable analyses of the structures of hydrogen-containing materials that are difficult to determine with conventional powder diffractometry.

We developed a technique of spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectometry (SCV-NR). Polarized-neutron reflectivity curves of film samples vary as a function of their proton-polarization P. The P-dependent reflectivity curves of a polystyrene film was precisely reproduced using a common set of structure parameters and the P-dependent neutron scattering length. The reflectivity curve of poly (styrene-block-isoprene) (PSPI) presented a shoulder attributed to holes with the depth corresponding to one period of periodic lamellae on the free surface only at a specific P. In this way, structural information about specific surfaces or interfaces can be obtained by controlling the P.

A melt wire was installed at the tip of the control rod in order to measure the temperature of High Temperature engineering Test Reactor (HTTR). After experience with reactor scram from the state of reactor power 100%, the melt wire was taken out from the control rod and appearance has been observed visually. In this study, an exclusive device for taking out the melt wire was prepared. The take-out device functions as expected, and the melt wire was safely and reliably taken out using a remote manipulator. And because the visual observation of the melt wire was clearly carried out, we were successful in developing the control rod temperature measurement technology. It was confirmed that the melt wires with a melting point of 505$$^{circ}$$C or less were melted, and the melt wires with a melting point of 651$$^{circ}$$C or more were not melted. Therefore, it was found that the highest arrival temperature of tip of the control rods where the melt wires are installed reaches within the range of 505 to 651$$^{circ}$$C. And it was found that the control rod temperature at the time of reactor scram does not exceed the using temperature criteria (900$$^{circ}$$C) of Alloy 800H of the control rod sleeve.

Removal of cover gas boundary components on the rotating plug of the experimental fast reactor Joyo

With the incident as an opportunity, repair techniques were developed in Joyo. The cover gas boundary components on rotating plug were removed as a preparation work for Joyo restoration work. The removed components are the door valve for fuel handling hole, hold-down shaft driving mechanism and door valve for inspection hole (A). Because these components were designed as the maintenance free. These components haven't been overhauled for more than 30 years since the construction of Joyo. Since the cover gas radioactivity was quite low due to the long time reactor shutdown, the new method was applied in this removal work. In order to prevent the contaminant of impurities in cover gas, the boundary was secured by temporary green house with slight negative pressure. Achievement of this work and accumulated experience will be able to provide valuable insights for further improving and verifying repair techniques in sodium cooled fast reactors.

Surface morphology of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (BAPC) thin films with thickness ranging from 30 to 1000 nm on silicon substrates was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films were prepared by spincasting from 1,2-dichloroethane solutions of 0.25-5.0 wt % BAPC. Even though longer annealing than 250 h was necessary for complete crystallization for bulk BAPC, high crystallinity was observed for 30 nm thick film after annealing at 200 $$^{circ}$$C for 48 h in vacuum. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements showed that the free volume hole size in 30 nm thick film was larger than that of bulk at 200 $$^{circ}$$C. Comparison of the BAPC concentration in the precursor solution with the overlap concentration suggests that the high crystallinity of the 30 nm BAPC film is due to less entangled chains caused by rapid removal of the solvent from the dilute solution.

Using the correlation between electric conductivity and acidity in solution, we have investigated an analytical method that is able to determine acidity in the nitric acid solution by measuring electric conductivity of sample diluted with distilled water, and correcting the electric conductivity for plutonium(Pu) and uranium(U) using multivariate analysis method. We obtained good results as follows, (1) Acidity in the nitric acid solutions containing Pu and U obtained by this method was good agreement, within 10%, compared with the acidity measured by potentiometric titration method. (2) For plutonium nitrate solution and plutonium-uranium mixed nitrate solution, the repeatability and reproducibility for the measurement of electric conductivity at 25.0$$^{circ}$$C were less than 0.52%, and 1.53% respectively. (3) Impurities such as americium and iron in the solutions did not influence to the measurement of electric conductivity, if total amounts of these impurities were less than 1% compared with those of Pu and U. From the results described above, electric conductivity measuring method has been applying to analysis of acidity in the nitric acid solutions containing Pu and U at high concentration handled in Plutonium Conversion Development Facility. Furthermore, this method can be expected for the application to analysis of acidity in nitric acid solutions containing Pu and U for reprocessing process.

International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF), being developed by EU, JA, RF and US, is a deuteron-lithium (Li) reaction neutron source for fusion materials testing. In the end of 2002, 3 year Key Element technology Phase (KEP) to reduce the key technology risk factors has been completed. This paper describes these KEP tasks results. To evaluate Li flow characteristics, a water and Li flow experiments have been done. To develop Li purification system, evaluation of nitrogen and tritium gettering materials have been done. Conceptual design of remote handling and basic experiment have been donde. In addition, safety analysis and diganostics design have been done. In the presentation, the latest design and future prospects will be also summarized.

This report describes the results of the primary and secondary cooling system interlock test and the fuel handling system function test, which were done as a part of JOYO MK-3 function test. The items of the test are: (1) Primary and secondary cooling system interlock test (SKS-106,210) (2) Loss of electric power supply test (SKS-116) (3) In-vessel and ex-vessel automatic fuel transportation test (SKS-501,502) As the interlock of the primary and secondary cooling system was changed, the interlock test by the reactor scram and the loss of electric power supply was carried out. The function of the remote automatic fuel handling system was confirmed before the handling of the fuel for MK-3 core configuration. The results of the test satisfied the required performance, and it was confirmed that operation of the primary and secondary cooling system interlock and operation of the fuel handling system in JOYO MK-3 were normal.
