Technetium-99m ($$^{99m}$$Tc) is the most widely used medical radioisotope in the world and is produced from molybdenum-99 ($$^{99}$$Mo). Production of $$^{99}$$Mo via the neutron capture method draws attention as an alternative to fission-derived $$^{99}$$Mo due to non-proliferation issues, but the specific radioactivity of $$^{99}$$Mo is extremely low. In this work, a porous $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ wire was prepared as an irradiation target in order to improve the specific activity by extracting $$^{99}$$Mo. Porous $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ wire is synthesized from Mo metal wire by a two-step heating procedure. The hot atom effect of $$^{99}$$Mo was confirmed by activity and isotope measurements of the porous $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ wire after neutron irradiation and the water used for extraction. In term of the extraction effectiveness, the effectiveness of $$^{99}$$Mo extraction in the porous $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ wire was comparable to that of commercial $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ powder.

The contamination of radioactive materials leaked from the reactor has resulted in numerous hot spots in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) building, posing obstacles to its decommissioning. In order to solve this problem, JAEA has conducted research and development of the digital technique for inverse estimation of radiation source distribution and countermeasures against the estimated source in virtual space for two years from 2021 based on the subsidy program "Project of Decommissioning and Contaminated Water Management" performed by the funds from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. In this article, we introduce the results of the project and the plan of the renewal project started in April 2023. For the former project, we report the derivative method for LASSO method considering the complex structure inside the building and the character of the source and show the result of the inverse estimation using the method in the real reactor building. Moreover, we explain the platform software "3D-ADRES-Indoor" which integrates these achievements. Finally, we introduce the plan of the latter project.

Technetium-99m ($$^{rm 99m}$$Tc) is one of the most important radioisotopes for diagnostic radio-imaging applications. $$^{rm 99m}$$Tc is a daughter product of the $$^{99}$$Mo isotope. There are two methods used to produce $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{rm 99m}$$Tc: the nuclear fission (n,f) and the neutron capture (n,$$gamma$$) methods. Between them, the (n,f) method is the main route, used for approximately 90% of the world's production. However, the (n,f) method faces numerous problems, including the use of highly enriched uranium, the release of highly radioactive waste, and nonproliferation problems. Therefore, the (n,$$gamma$$) method is being developed as a future replacement for the (n,f) method. In this work, $$beta$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ whiskers prepared by the thermal evaporation method and $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ particles were irradiated in a nuclear reactor to produce $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{rm 99m}$$Tc via neutron capture. The irradiated targets were dispersed into water to extract the $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{rm 99m}$$Tc. As a result, $$beta$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ whisker yielded higher $$^{99}$$Mo extraction rate than that from $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$. In addition, by comparing the dissolved $$^{98}$$Mo concentrations in water, we clarified a prominent hot-atom of $$beta$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ whiskers. This research is the first demonstration of $$beta$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ being used as an irradiation target in the neutron capture method. On the basis of the results, $$beta$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ is considered a promising irradiation target for producing $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{rm 99m}$$Tc by neutron capture and using water for the radioisotope extraction process in the future.

The fuel debris, consisting of nuclear fuel materials and reactor structural materials, generated in the accident of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant can become deteriorated like rocks under the changes of environmental temperature. Although the fuel debris have been cooled by water for 10 years, they are affected by seasonal and/or day-and-night temperature changes. Therefore, in evaluating the aging behavior of the fuel debris, it is essential to consider the changes in environmental temperature. Assuming that the fuel debris are deteriorated, radioactive substances that have recently undergone micronization could be eluted into the cooling water, and such condition may affect defueling methods. We focused on the effect of repeated changes in environmental temperature on the occurrence of cracks, and an accelerated test using simulated fuel debris was carried out. The length of the crack increases with increasing number of heat cycle; therefore, the fuel debris become brittle by stress caused by thermal expansion and contraction. In conclusion, it was confirmed that the mechanical deterioration of the fuel debris is similar to that of rocks or minerals, and it became possible to predict changes in the length of the crack in the simulated fuel debris and environmental model.

The family $$Ca.$$ Methanoperedenaceae archaea mediate anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). We newly developed a high-pressure laboratory incubation system and investigated groundwater from 214- and 249-m deep boreholes at Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory, Japan, where the high and low abundances of $$Ca.$$ Methanoperedenaceae archaea have been revealed, respectively. We incubated the samples amended with or without amorphous Fe(III) and $$^{13}$$C-labelled methane at an in-situ pressure of 1.6 MPa. After three to seven-day incubation, AOM activities were not detected from the 249-m sample but from the 214-m sample. The AOM rates were 93.7$$pm$$40.6 and 27.7$$pm$$37.5 nM/day with and without Fe(III) amendment. Suspended particulates were not visible in the 249-m sample on the filter, while they were abundant and contained amorphous Fe(III) and Fe(III)-bearing phyllosilicates in the 214-m sample. This supports the in-situ activity of Fe(III)-dependent AOM in the deep subsurface borehole.

We report on the first proton-induced single proton- and neutron-removal reactions from the neutron deficient $$^{14}$$O nucleus with large Fermi-surface asymmetry at $$sim$$100 MeV/nucleon. Our results provide the first quantitative contributions of multiple reaction mechanisms including the quasifree knockout, inelastic scattering, and nucleon transfer processes. It is shown that the inelastic scattering and nucleon transfer, usually neglected at such energy regime, contribute about 50% and 30% to the loosely bound proton and deeply bound neutron removal, respectively.

JRR-3 Process control system is used from the initial criticality (1990) after remodeling JRR- 3 as equipment used for monitoring and control of flow rate, temperature, pressure, water level, etc. of coolant and operation of nuclear reactor equipment, and it became necessary to renew as the aging progressed and spare parts could not be obtained sufficiently. Upon renewal, from the viewpoint of ensuring conservation of the core such as decay heat removal and minimizing the impact on reactor users and minimizing costs, it is important not to stop long-term reactor shutdown we planned to divide it into three stages and make it on a continuous basis. This report summarizes the renewal plan and renewal work divided into three stages.
