Evaluation of accidental sodium leak, combustion, and its thermal consequence is one of the important issues to be assessed in the field of sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR). The present paper deals with the sodium pool fire and subsequent heat transfer behavior in air atmosphere two-cell geometry both experimentally and analytically because such two-cell configuration is considered as a typical one to possess important characteristic of multi-compartment system seen in an actual plant. As a result of the numerical analysis using a lumped-parameter based zonal model safety analysis code SPHINCS, the applicability of the ventilation model implemented in SPHINCS has been demonstrated. It is also investigated that the buoyancy- driven ventilation is dominant in the experiment.

From various kinds of sodium fire situations postulated in SFR plants, the present paper treats the sodium pool fire and subsequent heat transfer behavior in an important air atmosphere two-cell geometry as one of the important cell configuration conditions. The detailed analysis and investigation of sodium fire and thermal-hydraulics in horizontally arranged two cells with an opening between them are made both from experimental measurement and from numerical simulation with a multi-cell sodium fire analysis code SPHINCS.

We demonstrate the temporal contrast enhancement in a petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) laser system. An extra saturable absorber, introduced downstream a low gain optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) preamplifier, has improved the temporal contrast in the system to 1.4$$times$$10$$^{12}$$ on the sub-nanosecond time scale at 70 TW power level. We have achieved 28 J of uncompressed broadband output energy with this system, indicating the potential for reaching peak powers near 600 TW.

The bow wave induced mechanism of high-order harmonics generation was discovered using simulations and catastrophe theory. This mechanism feasibility was successfully demonstrated in 3D and 2D PIC simulations. The mechanism and the simulations explained high-order harmonics in the XUV spectral region seen in recent experiments with terawatt lasers. Development of new XUV light and X-ray source based on the high-order harmonics generation mechanism is proposed.

The authors are initiating systematic verification and validation activity to demonstrate the reliability of numerical simulation tool for sodium fire behavior postulated in a fast reactor plant. The activity is in progress with the main focuses on already developed sodium fire analysis codes SPHINCS and AQUA-SF. The events to be evaluated are sodium spray, pool, or combined fire accidents followed by thermodynamic behaviors. The present paper describes that the "Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table" is developed at first to clarify the important validation points in the codes, and that an "Assessment Matrix" is proposed which summarizes the tests for validating the computational models for important phenomena. Furthermore, the paper shows a practical validation with a separate effect test in which the spray droplet combustion model of both codes predicts the burned amount of a sodium droplet with the error mostly less than 30%.

We demonstrate a new high-order harmonic generation mechanism reaching the "water window" spectral region in experiments with multi-terawatt femtosecond lasers irradiating gas jets. A few hundred harmonic orders are resolved, giving $$mu$$J/sr pulses. Harmonics are collectively emitted by an oscillating electron spike formed at the joint of the boundaries of a cavity and bow wave created by a relativistically self-focusing laser in underdense plasma. The spike sharpness and stability are explained by catastrophe theory. The mechanism is corroborated by particle-in-cell simulations.

Conceptual design study of the JSFR needs the evaluation of thermodynamic consequences in hypothetical sodium fire accident. The authors are therefore initiating systematic V&V activity for sodium fire evaluation tools. The activity is in progress with the main focuses on already developed sodium fire analysis codes SPHINCS and AQUA-SF. The present paper describes that a preliminary "PIRT" is developed at first, and an "assessment matrix" is proposed which summarizes both separate effect tests (SET) and integral effect tests (IET) for validating the computational models or whole code for important phenomena. Furthermore, the paper shows an individual validation with SET in which the spray droplet combustion model of SPHINCS and AQUA-SF predicts the burned amount of a falling sodium droplet with the error mostly less than 30%.

A steroid surface materials record regolith processes and a history of cosmic-ray irradiation. Noble gas isotopes in three rocky grains from Itokawa have been determined. High concentrations of solar He, Ne, and Ar, as high as those in lunar soils, are released at variable temperatures from each sample. The isotopic compositions are essentially identical to those of solar wind but distinguishable in He relative abundance. These noble gas characteristics can be explained by repeated implantation and preferential loss of solar He by removal of weathered He-rich rim on the grain surface through friction among regolith grains on Itokawa. Residence time of regolith materials on Itokawa is alculated to be shorter than 10 Myr, suggesting that regolith materials of small asteroids would escape easily to space.

We report the present status of the sub-MeV X-ray generation via Compton backscattering by using 150-MeV electron beam and the Nd:YAG laser. In particular, we show the result of the X-ray generation experiment and of the laser pulse compression for increasing the X-ray flux.

Ion acceleration in subcritical density plasma via interaction of intense laser pulse with cluster-gas target

We present substantial enhancement of the accelerated ion energies up to 10-20 MeV per nucleon by utilizing the unique properties of the cluster-gas target irradiated with 40-fs laser pulses of only 150 mJ energy, corresponding to approximately tenfold increase in the ion energies compared to previous experiments using thin foil targets. A particle-in-cell simulation infers that the high energy ions are generated at the rear side of the target due to the formation of a strong dipole vortex structure in sub-critical density plasmas. The demonstrated method can be important in the development of efficient laser ion accelerators for hadron therapy and other applications.

Improvement of SBS laser pulse compression system for the Compton backscattered X-ray source

At the previous symposium in Advanced Photon Research, we proposed and demonstrated the laser pulse compression via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) for increasing the flux of the Compton backscattered X rays. After that, we improved the SBS pulse compression system by introducing the image relay in the laser transport line. As a result, we achieve the stably compressed laser pulse with a duration of 2.1 ns and with an energy of 0.84 J. By installing this system into the Compton backscattered X-ray source, the X-ray flux will be increased 3.2 times for the present system at the KPSI-JAEA.
