Umino, Yoshinori; Kato, Keisuke; Tanigawa, Masafumi; Kobayashi, Daisuke; Obu, Tomoyuki; Kimura, Yuichi*; Nemoto, Ryo*; Tajiri, Kazuma*

Nihon Hozen Gakkai Dai-19-Kai Gakujutsu Koenkai Yoshishu, p.33 - 36, 2023/08

In the basic laboratory of the Plutonium Conversion Development Facility in Tokai Reprocessing Plant, tests had been conducted to obtain effective data for manufacturing mixed plutonium and uranium oxide powder by irradiating a mixture of plutonium and uranium solution with microwaves. The test has already been completed, and we are currently dismantling and removing equipment. In this paper, techniques related to equipment renewal, dismantling and removal works inside the glove-box are discussed.

Radionuclides released during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident caused altitude-dependent surface contamination in the mountainous areas of Japan. To explore the possible cloudwater deposition that formed a distinctive contamination profile, data from pollen sensors deployed nationwide were analyzed. Utilizing the polarization of scattered light, Cedar pollen and water droplets were distinguished. On March 15, when surface contamination was simulated in previous studies, dense cloud with high droplet number density were observed outside the $$^{137}$$Cs surface deposition areas, indicating that the sensor sites were immersed amid cloud layers. In contrast, cloud droplets with moderate number density were measured at altitudes of approximately 570-840 m, which overlapped with the surface contamination areas. Considering the existing knowledge on vertical gradients of cloudwater composition, these suggest that contaminated cloud droplets were localized near the cloud base where a moderate number density of cloud droplets was measured. A formation process was proposed for the observed vertical distribution, that is, surface contamination occurred intensively at the contact line between the cloud base and mountain slopes via cloudwater deposition, and the descending cloud base formed the contamination zone. This study sheds light on the deposition processes of radionuclides which have not previously been clarified.

TRP has stored the plutonium in solution state for long-term since the last PCDF operation in 2007 was finished. After the great east Japan earthquake in 2011, JAEA had investigated the risk against potential hazard of these solutions which might lead to make hydrogen explosion and/or boiling of the solution accidents with the release of radioactive materials to the public when blackout. To reduce the risk for storing Pu solution (about 640 kg Pu), JAEA planned to perform the process operation for the solidification and stabilization of the solution by converted into MOX powder at PCDF in 2013. In order to perform PCDF operation without adaption of new safety regulation, JAEA conducted several safety measures such as emergency safety countermeasures, necessary security and safeguards (3S) measures with understanding of NRA. As a result, the PCDF operation had stared on 28th April, 2014, and successfully completed to convert MOX powder on 3rd August, 2016 for about 2 years as planned.

Alimina ceramics vacuum duct has been developing at JAERI for the 3GeV-RCS of the J-PARC project. There are two type of the alumina ceramics vacuum ducts, one is a 1.5m-long duct with a circular cross section for use in the quadrupole magnet, the other is a 3.5m-long being bending 15 degree with an elliptical cross section for use in the dipole magnet. These ducts could be manufactured by brazed jointing several duct segments of 0.5-0.8 m long. Since some electrically conductive boundary is necessary to form on the ceramics duct in order to reduce the duct impedance, the alumina ceramics ducts have copper stripes on the outside surface of the ducts. This is called for rf shielding system. The copper stripes as rf shielding is produced by an electroforming method. In order to reduce emitting secondary electrons when primary protons or electrons impinge onto the surface, TiN film is coated inside surface of the alumina ceramics duct.

The main components of a new beamline for surface and interface crystal structure determination at SPring-8 are briefly described. Stages for the beamline monochromator are modified for making an incident X-ray intensity more stable for surface X-ray experiments. Absolute photon flux densities were measured with an incident photon energy. A new ultrahigh vacuum system is introduced with preliminary X-ray measurements from an ordered oxygen on Pt(111) surface.

Preparatory Activities of the Fugen Decommissioning

Iguchi, Yukihiro; Tajiri, Tsuyochi; Kiyota, Shiko

Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-12) (CD-ROM), 0 Pages, 2003/00

The development of decommissioning for Fugen is divided into two areas. One area is development of unique technology for dismantling special components such as the reactor core and the heavy water system. Another area is improvement and enhancement of existing technologies. Especially the former area requires effort and comprises development of the reactor dismantlement, tritium decontamination of heavy water system and engineering support systems.

X-ray diffraction study on hydrogen-induced Pd(110) surface reconstruction

Takahashi, Masamitsu; Fujikawa, Seiji*; Hu, W.; Tajiri, Hiroo*

no journal, ,

Absorption of hydrogen into a substrate begins with dissociated adsorption of hydrogen molecules. The mechanism of the transition from adsorption to absorption is an important knowledge for improving the performance of hydrogen storage materials. The aim of the present study is to verify the hydrogen absorption model in atomic scale through quantitative determination of structures of hydrogen-adsorbed Pd(110) by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Experiments were performed at a synchrotron beamline 13XU at SPring-8 using a surface X-ray diffractometer integrated with a UHV chamber equipped with a cryostat. We measured five crystal truncation rod (CTR) profiles with increasing substrate temperature to room temperature from 57 K after the substrate was exposed to 10$$^{-6}$$ Torr s hydrogen. Results show an atomic-scale picture that explains how adsorbed hydrogen is absorbed into the Pd bulk.
