Thermoelectric materials for highly efficient devices must satisfy conflicting requirements of high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity. In this paper, we studied the crystal structure and phonon dynamics of tetrahedrites (Cu,Zn)$$_{12}$$(Sb,As)$$_{4}$$S$$_{13}$$. The results revealed that the Cu atoms in a planar coordination are rattling, which effectively scatter phonons. These findings provide a new strategy for the development of highly efficient thermoelectric materials with planar coordination.

We performed muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements ($$mu$$SR) in caged structural heavy fermion system PrIr$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ to elucidate magnetic and superconducting properties. Temperature independent $$mu$$SR spectra were observed below 1K, indicating that the phase transition at 0.11K is non-magnetic origin, most probably pure quadrupole ordering. In the superconducting phase, no sign of unconventional superconductivity, like a broken time reversal symmetry superconductivity, is seen below $$T_c$$=0.05K. Moreover, we have observed spontaneous muon spin precession in a zero field in the paramagnetic phase below 15K, suggesting a novel coupling between $$^{141}$$Pr nuclei and muon realize in PrIr$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$.

We have examined the electronic states of the Kondo semiconductor CeRhAs and the semimetal CeRhSb by means of high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy using tunable photon energies from 40 up to 5948 eV. On the basis of the photon-energy dependence ofthe photoionization cross-section, we have elucidated the p-d-f hybridized states in these compounds.

High-resolution resonance-photoemission spectroscopy has been performed on the Ce$$_{1-x}$$La$$_{x}$$RhAs (0$$leq$$x$$leq$$0.05) single crystal to elucidate a collapse of the energy gap in the Kondo semiconductor CeRhAs by La substitution. With increasing x, the spectral intensity of the Ce 4f$$^{1}$$ derived states near the Fermi level decreases and new 4f derived spectral feature appears at a higher binding energy. The Rh 4d-derived states, on the other hand, are not significantly changed by the substitution. New 4f-derived states have incoherent nature, which is responsible for the collapse of the semiconducting state for x$$>$$$$sim$$0.02.

The Ce 4f-derived states in CeRhX (X=Sn and In) were directly examined by means of high-resolution 3d-4f resonance photoemission spectroscopy. Compared with the Kondo metal CePtSn, which has a low Kondo temperature, CeRhX has a strong Ce 4f$$^{1}$$ weight near the Fermi level ($$E$$$$_{rm F}$$) and has a weak Ce 4f$$^{0}$$ peak, indicating a strong valence fluctuation. The Ce 4f$$^{1}$$ spectral features indicate that the c-f hybridization strength in CeRhSn is weaker than that in CeRhIn.

It is well known that RB$$_6$$ (R: rear-earth element) exhibit variety of properties. For example, CeB$$_6$$ is considered as a typical compound of Kondo lattice system and many studies have been carried out from the viewpoints of multipole ordering etc. TmB$$_6$$ is interesting compound due to its possible valence fluctuation. However, material synthesis have not been reported yet. Mean while, YnB$$_6$$ shows non magnetic ground state. We have carried out muon spin relaxation ($$mu$$SR) measurements in polycrystalline specimen of Tm$$_{0.55}$$Yb$$_{0.45}$$B$$_6$$ to elucidate magnetic ground state. As a result, we have clearly observed local magnetic field below 2K and evidently, whole the system is in magnetic ordering state.

$$mu$$SR studies on PrRh$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$

Higemoto, Wataru; Ito, Takashi; Nagasawa, Naohiro*; Onimaru, Takahiro*; Takabatake, Toshiro*

no journal, ,

In caged structural compound PrRh$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$, superconductivity and other unknown phase transition occur at the same temperature 0.06K. This phase transition is speculated as quadrupole phase transition. However, no any microscopic study is carried out up to now and detail of the phase transition is not known at all. We have studied quadrupole ordering and superconductivity in PrRh$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ by using muon spin relaxation method at J-PARC muon science facility. As a result, we have not observed any significant change of the signal above and below phase transition temperature. This fact indicate the no magnetic phase transition occur and support the quadrupole phase transition. In addition, no trace of an unconventional superconductivity was detected in our measurements. In the presentation, we will mention detail of the measurements.

no journal, ,

Motion of a guest atom in caged structural compound is important in connection with the search for efficient thermoelectric materials. We have studied the local motion of a guest atom in the type-I crathrates Ba$$_8$$Ga$$_{16}$$Si$$_{30}$$ by using muon spin relaxation method. We will report the detail of the results.
