Non-volatile magnetic memory is attracting attention as a next-generation magnetic memory that does not require power to retain information. The interface between iron and magnesium oxide is one of the candidate materials, but recent experiments have reported that inserting a single atomic layer of lithium fluoride into the interface between iron and magnesium oxide doubles the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which is an indicator of magnetic memory characteristics. In this study, the magnetic moments at the iron-magnesium oxide interface and the iron-lithium fluoride-magnesium oxide interface were calculated using the first-principles electronic structure calculation software OpenMX. The results revealed that the insertion of lithium fluoride at the interface tilts the electronic orbitals of iron atoms near the interface toward the region of minimum electronic density of lithium fluoride, thereby increasing the magnetic moment by up to twofold. Additionally, the insertion of lithium fluoride induced "magnetic strain", which distorts the structure to favor a ferromagnetic state for the iron atom layer. The scientific insights gained from this study provide new guidelines for exploring candidate materials for high-performance non-volatile magnetic memory.
