Behavior of tritium release from a stainless vessel of the mercury target as a spallation neutron source

A spallation neutron source with a mercury target has been in operation at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility of J-PARC since 2008. The target vessel made of stainless steel is required to be exchanged periodically due to radiation damage etc. In this presentation, tritium gas release observed in the first series of exchange work in 2011 and the analytical results will be shown.

Increase in cell motility by carbon ion irradiation via the Rho signaling pathway and its inhibition by the ROCK inhibitor Y-27632 in lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells

The effect of carbon ion irradiation on cell motility through the Rho signaling pathway in the human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549 was studied. At 48 h after irradiation, the cell motility of A549 cells became significantly greater, and the formation of protrusions significantly increased in cells irradiated with carbon ion. The observed increase in cell motility due to carbon ion irradiation was similar to that observed due to X-ray irradiation. Western-blot analysis showed that carbon ion irradiation increased P-MLC2-S19 expression compared with in unirradiated controls, while total MLC2 expression was unchanged. Exposure to a non-toxic concentration of Y-27632, a specific inhibitor of ROCK, reduced the expression of P-MLC2-S19 after C-ion irradiation, resulting in a significant reduction in migration. These data suggest that carbon irradiation increases cell motility in A549 cells via the Rho signaling pathway and that ROCK inhibition reduces that effect.

A study of differential photo-neutron yields by irradiation with 2 GeV electrons has been carried out. In this extension of a previous study in which measurements were made at an angle of 90 degrees. Relative to incident electrons, the differential photoneutron yield was obtained at two other angles, 48 and 140 degrees, to study its angular characteristics. Photo-neutron spectra were measured using a pulsed beam time-of-flight method and a BC418 plastic scintillator. The reliable range of neutron energy measurement was 8-250 MeV. The neutron spectra were measured for 10 Xo-thick Cu, Sn, W and Pb targets. The angular distribution characteristics, together with the previous results for 90, are presented in the study. The experimental results are compared with Monte Carlo calculation results. The yields predicted by MCNPX 2.5 tend to underestimate the measured ones. The same trend holds for the comparison results using the EGS4 and PICA3 codes.

Relationship between the current direction in the inversion layer and the electrical characteristics of metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors on 3C-SiC

The electrical characteristics of cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) with the current direction in the inversion layer perpendicular to [-110] ([-110]-perpendicular MOSFETs) were compared to those of 3C-SiC MOSFETs with the current direction in the inversion layer parallel to [-110] ([-110]-parallel MOSFETs). The threshold voltage (V$$_{T}$$) for both MOSFETs shows -0.5 V although enhancement type MOSFETs were designed. The values of channel mobility which was estimated from linear region of drain current (I$$_{D}$$) - drain voltage (V$$_{D}$$) curves are 230 cm$$^{2}$$/Vs for [-110]-perpendicular MOSFETs and 215 cm$$^{2}$$/Vs for [-110]-parallel MOSFETs, indicating no significant difference between both MOSFETs. The value of I$$_{D}$$ for [-110]-perpendicular MOSFETs is of order of 10-8 A at V$$_{D}$$ = 10V and gate voltage (V$$_{G}$$) of -2V. However, for [-110]-parallel MOSFETs, I$$_{D}$$ shows of order of -10-6 A at V$$_{D}$$ = 10V and V$$_{G}$$ = -2V.

Measurement of radioactivity induced by high-energy protons with energy of 2.83 and 24 GeV and spallation neutrons produced by bombarding a mercury target with the high-energy protons were performed by using the AGS (Alternative Gradient Synchrotron) accelerator at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The samples of boron, carbon, aluminum, iron, copper, niobium, mercury-oxide, lead, bismuth, acrylic resin, SS-316, Inconel-625 and Inconel-718 were irradiated around the mercury target. After the irradiation, the radioactivity of each sample was measured by using HPGe detectors at the cooling time between 2 h and 200 d. In the processing of the measured $$gamma$$-ray spectra, more than 90 radioactive nucleus were identified, and the radioactivity data were obtained. This report gives the experimental procedure, the data processing and the experimental results in detail.

The n-channel Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) were fabricated on cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) epitaxial layers grown on 3C-SiC substrates. The gate oxide of the MOSFETs was formed using pyrogenic oxidation at 1100$$^{circ}$$C. The 3C-SiC MOSFETs showed enhancement type behaviors after annealing at 200$$^{circ}$$C for 30 min in argon atmosphere. The maximum value of the effective channel mobility of the 3C-SiC MOSFETs was 260 cm$$^{2}$$/Vs. The leakage current of gate oxide was of a few tens of nA/cm$$^{2}$$ at an electric field range below 8.5 MV/cm, and breakdown began around 8.5 MV/cm.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of carbon ion (C-ion) irradiation on cell motility through the ras homolog gene family member (Rho) signaling pathway in the human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549. Cell motility was assessed by a wound-healing assay, and the formation of cell protrusions was evaluated by F-actin staining. Cell viability was examined by the WST-1 assay. The expression of myosin light chain 2 (MLC2) and the phosphorylation of MLC2 at Ser19 (P MLC2-S19) were analyzed by Western blot. The data suggest that C-ion irradiation increases cell motility in A549 cells via the Rho signaling pathway and that ROCK inhibition reduces that effect.

A spallation neutron source of mercury has been operated in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility of J-PARC. A stainless vessel containing mercury during the operation has been exchanged periodically. During the exchange work, tritium release has been observed. The behavior and an analysis from a viewpoint of tritium absorption and emission from stainless steel are reported.
