Carbon steel is one of the candidate materials for overpacks in geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste, and is known to susceptible to stress corrosion cracking(SCC) depending on the condition in carbonate environment. In order to understand the influence of temperature on the SCC susceptibility of carbon steel, slow strain rate test (SSRT) of rolled steel were performed in NaHCO aqueous solution with varying temperature in the range of 303-393K for conditions of 0.1-0.5 mol/dm
, which is assumed to be the upper limit of carbonate concentration in groundwater in a geological disposal environment. As the results, no obvious influence of temperature on mechanical properties such as fracture strain ratio and reduction area ratio were observed, but SCC susceptibility based on SCC fracture ratio increased at relatively low temperatures of 303K and 323K. It was suggested that the reason for the higher SCC sensitivity at lower temperatures was due to slower repassivation at lower temperatures. Regarding the type of SCC, intergranular SCC was dominant at low temperatures and tended to transition to intergranular SCC at higher temperatures. Transgranular SCC tended to be observed at lower potentials than those at which intergranular SCC was observed.

In the J -PARC 3GeV synchrotron accelerator (RCS), a new signal processing system for beam monitors is been developing to replace the existing system for the main beam monitors that monitor the stability of the accelerator: beam loss monitor, beam position monitor and beam current monitor. The new system will consist of a TAG server and an ADC module that can be used commonly for the three main monitors. The main design concepts of the new system are: (1) the TAG server divides various beam J-PARC tag information to each ADC module, (2) the ADC module converts acquisition data from beam monitors to digital signals by ADC and performs high-speed analysis by FPGA with switching analysis methods to suit each monitor, (3) the ADC module periodically outputs the analysis data with tag information by packing the signal processing data of all shots for about 10 seconds, and also outputs any one shot data on-demand, and (4) the raw waveform data, the latest four shots of FFT-related data in the process of analysis and bunch data for each cycle are stored in the internal memory of the ADC module, and the data can be read out as needed. In this presentation, we will report on the progress of the data acquisition test of tag information reading and beam monitor signals using the prototype under development.

To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

For the future use of the methods to overcome restrictions of classical approaches, the applicability to the actual components is of concern. In this study, two benchmark problems on the fracture tests supposing actual components were provided to investigate prediction ability of simulation methods containing parameter decisions. One was the circumferentially through-wall and surface cracked pipes subjected to monotonic bending, and the other was the circumferentially through-wall cracked pipes subjected to cyclic bending. Participants predicted the ductile crack propagation behavior by their own approaches, including FEM employed GTN yielding function with void ratio criterion, are FEM employed GTN yielding function, FEM with fracture strain or energy criterion modified by stress triaxiality, XFEM with J or delta J criterion, FEM with stress triaxiality and plastic strain based ductile crack propagation using FEM, and elastic-plastic peridynamics. Both the deformation and the crack propagation behaviors for monotonic bending were well reproduced, while few participants reproduced those for cyclic bending. To reproduce pipe deformation and fracture behaviors, most of groups needed parameters which were determined toreproduce pipe deformation and fracture behaviors in benchmark problems themselves and it is still difficult to reproduce them by using parameters only from basic materials tests.

The IL allowed a rapid extraction of Pd(II) with an extraction ratio of approximately 100%. The extractions of Ru(III) and Rh(III) by the IL were slower than that of Pd(II), but the rates were accelerated by temperature elevation. The extractions of Ru(III) and Rh(III) at 50C reached equilibrium within 4 and 8 h, respectively, with the extraction ratios of over 90% without assisting agents or other methods for the extraction system. Furthermore, the IL could extract more than 90% of Ru(III), Rh(III), and Pd(II) from the simulated HLLW within 2 h at 50

The existing timing system, which was developed during the construction period of the-PARC, has been working without major issues since 2006. After a decade of operation, the optical modules, which are key components for signal transfer, were discontinued already. Thus, the next-generation timing system for the J-PARC is under development. The new system is designed to be compatible with the existing system in terms of the operating principle. The new system utilizes modern high speed signal communication for the transfer of the clock, trigger, and type code. We present the system configuration of the next-generation timing system and current status.

In this study, the full-scale cast steel overpack was produced experimentally and the distribution of casting defects were investigated. The corrosion test regarding corrosion rate and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility were also conducted using samples taken from the full-scale cast steel overpack and the corrosion resistance of cast steel was compared with that of forged steel. From above two corrosion tests, it can be said that the corrosion resistance of cast steel is mostly the same as that of forged steel.

Precise timing pulses from the timing system are necessary for acceleration of high intensity proton beams in the J-PARC accelerators. The existing timing system was developed during the construction period of the J-PARC. The system has been working well for more than ten years, however, the optical modules for the signal transfer from the central control building to the accelerators are discontinued already. Although we have spares of the optical devices, maintenance of the system will be difficult. Therefore, we are developing the next generation timing system for the J-PARC. We present the design of the system, preliminary test results, and future plans.

In the event of an abnormal situation, a machine protection system (MPS) that immediately inhibits the beam is indispensable to minimize the damage and the radioactivation by beam loss. The existing MPS was developed during the construction period of the J-PARC. Then, the system has been working stably for more than ten years. On the other hand, since there are many MPS modules that have been used from the beginning of J-PARC operation, it is important to systematically proceed with updating (replacement) of modules as a measure against aging of MPS. However, the main components of the existing MPS module have been discontinued. Therefore, it is indispensable to redesign the MPS modules in consideration of improvement such as the compatibility with existing modules and the miniaturization. In this paper, the development status of the new module and the update plan of MPS for Linac and RCS are detailed.

The timing system data (delay value, status, etc.) of J-PARC Linac and rapid cycling synchrotron is managed by a computer. After updating this hardware, we encountered the problem of data corruption in the timing system. Therefore, we added a function to the software for the timing system VME and investigated the cause of the problem. The investigation results showed a problem with the network connected PCI-Express reflective memory. We implemented measures for stabilizing the timing system operation based on this result.
