Radiocesium-bearing microparticles cause a large variation in $$^{137}$$Cs activity concentration in the aquatic insect ${it Stenopsyche marmorata}$ (Tricoptera: Stenopsychidae) in the Ota River, Fukushima, Japan

We investigated the variability in $$^{137}$$Cs activity concentration in individual aquatic insects in detritivorous caddisfly (${it Stenopsyche marmorata}$) and carnivorous dobsonfly (${it Protohermes grandis}$) larvae from the Ota River, Fukushima. Caddisfly larvae showed sporadically higher radioactivity, whereas no such outliers were observed in dobsonfly larvae. Autoradiography and scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed that these caddisfly larvae samples contained radiocesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs), which are insoluble Cs-bearing silicate glass particles. CsMPs were also found in potential food sources of caddisfly larvae, such as periphyton and drifting particulate organic matter, indicating that larvae may ingest CsMPs along with food particles of similar size. Although CsMPs distribution and uptake by organisms in freshwater ecosystems is relatively unknown, our study demonstrates that CsMPs can be taken up by aquatic insects.

We have developed a new Si/CdTe semiconductor double-sided strip detector (DSD) Compton camera. The camera consists of a 500-$$mu$$m-thick Si-DSD and four layers of 750-$$mu$$m-thick CdTe-DSDs all of which have common electrode configuration segmented into 128 strips on each side with pitches of 250$$mu$$m. In order to realize high angular resolution and to reduce size of the detector system, a stack of DSDs with short stack pitches of 4 mm is utilized to make the camera. Taking advantage of the excellent energy and position resolutions of the semiconductor devices, the camera achieves high angular resolutions of 4.5 degrees at 356 keV and 3.5 degrees at 662 keV. To obtain such high resolutions together with an acceptable detection efficiency, we demonstrate data reduction methods including energy calibration using Compton scattering continuum and depth sensing in the CdTe-DSD. We also discuss imaging capability of the camera and show simultaneous multi-energy imaging.

By using new Compton camera consisting of silicon double-sided strip detector (Si-DSD) and CdTe-DSD developed for the ASTRO-H mission, an experiment was conducted to study its feasibility for advanced hotspot monitoring. In addition to hotspot imaging already provided by commercial imaging systems, the identification of the variety of radioisotopes is realized thanks to the good energy resolution given by the semiconductor detectors. Three radioisotopes of $$^{133}$$Ba (356 keV), $$^{22}$$Na (511 keV) and $$^{137}$$Cs (662 keV) were individually imaged by applying event selection in the energy window and the $$gamma$$-ray images was correctly overlapped by an optical picture. The detection efficiency of 1.68$$times$$10$$^{-4}$$ (effective area: 1.7$$times$$10$$^{-4}$$ cm$$^2$$) and angular resolution of 3.8$$^{circ}$$ were obtained by stacking five detector modules for 662 keV $$gamma$$-ray. The higher detection efficiency required in a specific use can be achieved by stacking more detector modules.

We are constructing a three-dimensional imaging system for medical and biological applications. The system will allow simultaneous imaging at high spatial and energy resolutions across a wide energy range, from several tens of keV to a few MeV. In this work, one prototype head module have been developed for a multi-head Si/CdTe Compton camera system. The performance of the prototype was evaluated with a sealed Ba-133 radiation source. The experiments confirmed that the imaging results were consistent with actual source position. In addition to the resolution for the parallel directions to the detector surface, the position resolution was evaluated for the depth direction at a point in near region of the head-module. These position resolutions were well reproduced by Monte Carlo simulation results.

JAEA has developed and demonstrated the Remote Monitoring (RM) technology on the safeguards equipment at the storage area in PFPF to improve the efficiency of the inspection activity. JAEA is considering the expansion of the RM technology to the safeguards equipment in the process area to improve the efficiency of the inspection activity under the integrated safeguards. JAEA considers that the cabling cost and work in the facility will be reduced to apply the wireless LAN to the RM technology. JAEA performed the confirmatory testing of the performance of the Glove box Unattended Assay and Monitoring system (GUAM) and the remote transmission of the GUAM measurement data by the wireless LAN in cooperation with Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited. In this test, JAEA confirmed it's possible to establish the wireless LAN networking in the process area. This paper reports the applicability of the wireless LAN to the RM technology based on the results of the confirmatory testing.

Installation of ferritic steel tiles was proposed in JT-60U to reduce the toroidal magnetic field ripple and to improve the fast ion loss, which degrades heating efficiency and increases heat load on plasma facing component under large volume plasma operations. We selected a 8Cr-2W-0.2V ferritic steel with the cost-effectiveness, in which concentration limits of activation elements in F82H were relaxed because of the less number of neutron generations from deuterium operations on JT-60U. The fabricated ferritic steel has clear tempered martensitic microstructure, and sufficient magnetic and mechanical properties. The saturated magnetization was estimated to 1.7 Tesla at 573 K, lower than expected, but effectiveness in JT-60U was confirmed by numerical analyses. To research the effect of material conditions, such as microstructure and heat treatment, on saturated magnetization of the ferritic steel based on 8-9Cr is important for the future fusion reactors which will be planned to install the ferritic steel as the in-vessel components.

In order to reduce Toroidal magnetic Field (TF) ripple in JT-60U, ferritic steel (8Cr-2W-0.2V) armors were installed inside Vacuum Vessel (VV). 55 plates of 8Cr-2W-0.2V were manufactured from 2.6 ton ingots made by 20 ton vacuum induction melting. Saturated magnetization and thermal conductivity are 10-20% lower than those of F82H. Electrical resistivity and tensile properties are similar to those of F82H. 1122 carbon armors were replaced to 8Cr-2W-0.2V with reinforcement of stud nut. The absorbed beam power will be expected to increase 30%. A correction method of additional magnetic flux and field caused by 8Cr-2W-0.2V armors for magnetic probes is proposed for plasma position and shape control. Correction for flux loops is mostly good, but correcting model and program for B$$theta$$ probe need some improvements.

We have developed prototype of the multi-element imaging system for plant study using CdTe semiconductor detector, which has high-energy resolution. The feasibility of this system for $$gamma$$-ray emission imaging of radioactive multi-nuclide tracer was examined by imaging experiment with a plant. The distribution of the two sample tracers, technetium and thallium, fed to a tobacco plant was successfully visualized for each nuclide simultaneously. The presented imaging method will yield plant molecular imaging, which visualizes dynamics of some competitive elements in intact plant, non-invasively and quantitatively.
