Hydrogenation of silicon-bearing hexagonal close-packed iron and its implications for density deficits in the inner core

To investigate silicon effects on the hydrogen-induced volume expansion of iron, neutron diffraction and X-ray diffraction experiments were conducted to examine hcp-Fe$$_{0.95}$$Si$$_{0.05}$$ under high pressures and high temperatures. Neutron diffraction experiments were performed on the deuterated hcp-Fe$$_{0.95}$$Si$$_{0.05}$$ at 13.5 GPa and 900 K, and at 12.1 GPa and 300 K. By combining the P-V-T equation of state of hcp-Fe$$_{0.95}$$Si$$_{0.05}$$, present results indicate that the hydrogen-induced volume expansion of hcp-Fe$$_{0.95}$$Si$$_{0.05}$$ is 10% greater than that of pure hcp iron. Using the obtained values, we estimated the hydrogen content that would reproduce the density deficit in the inner core, which was 50% less than that without the effect of silicon. Possible hydrogen content, $$x$$, in the inner core and the outer core was calculated to be 0.07 and 0.12-0.15, respectively, when reproducing the density deficit of the inner core with hcp-Fe$$_{0.95}$$Si$$_{0.05}$$Hx.

Inherent core safety performance of small sodium-cooled fast reactor with oxide fuel

The MOX fueled SMR-SFRs with lower linear heat rating of 100 W/cm and 50 W/cm, whereas the linear heat rating at rated power is around 400 W/cm in general, were designed to decrease the fuel temperature during its rated power state in order to pursue the inherent core safety for MOX fueled SMR-SFRs. The transient analyses for Anticipated Transient Without Scram (ATWS) events represented by an Unprotected Loss of Flow (ULOF) accident on the lower linear heat rating cores were performed considering their inherent feedback reactivity. Through the transient analysis, the inherent core safety performances for the lower linear heat rating cores were discussed based on the evaluated maximum coolant temperature and Cumulative Damage Fraction (CDF) as criteria to maintain the core and fuel integrity. The feasible design window for MOX fueled SMR-SFRs with the inherent core safety focusing on the linear heat rating was identified based on the transient analysis results.

Noise countermeasures for inverter-controlled multi-stage roots vacuum pumps in J-PARC LINAC L3BT

In J-PARC LINAC, the vacuum system of L3BT, which is a beam transport line connecting LINAC and 3GeV synchrotron, uses a turbo molecular pump and roots pump for rough exhaust and an ion pump for main exhaust. In addition, beam dumps are connected to the end of the L3BT at 0 degree, 30 degree, 90 degree, and 100 degree positions via vacuum partition windows. The roots pumps are used as the exhaust system for each beam dump. The roots pump controllers have been installed away from the pump in the accelerator tunnel to avoid radiation damages. Besides, the special controllers, which have no inverter circuit inside, have been used to reduce the electrical noise on the beam loss monitors nearby. However, using the special controller without inverters, several problems have occurred such as the instability or wide variability of the pumping speed. To solve such problems, the roots pump controller with the inverter circuit must be used after reducing the electrical noise. In this report, some countermeasures to reduce the electrical noise from the inverters were investigated. The noise reduction circuit was successfully optimized to the level where the beam loss monitors works unaffected.

Improved vacuum system for high-power proton beam operation of the rapid cycling synchrotron

Through the operation of the vacuum system in J-PARC, it becomes evident that the high-power beam has more powerful effects on the vacuum system than expected. Those effects are the malfunction of vacuum equipment and the large pressure rise. The former is the failure of the turbomolecular pump (TMP) controller. The TMP itself is also damaged by a bearing crush due to a touch-down. We have developed a TMP controller that can connect with long cables of more than 200 m lengths to install the controller in a control room where there is no radiation influence. The TMP with high-strength bearing has been also developed. The latter is an extreme pressure rise with increasing the beam power. It is indicated that the pressure rise mechanism is a result of ion-stimulated gas desorption. It is finally confirmed that the dynamic pressure during the high-power beam is effectually suppressed by additionally installing the NEG pumps.

Some methods of making titanium vacuum chamber act as getter pump for UHV/XHV

The NEG coating, which has been developed in CERN, is a revolutionary technique that can make a beam pipe act as a vacuum pump by coating the getter materials with the ability to adsorb/absorb gas molecules on the beam pipe surface. The NEG materials are alloys of titanium, zirconium, and vanadium. Titanium is one of the getter materials. In high-power beam accelerators, titanium has been used as the beam pipe chamber material due to its low radioactivation characteristics. The ordinal titanium surface has no getter function because it is covered with titanium-oxide film. The new technique, which removes the titanium-oxide surface by the sputtering and makes the titanium vacuum chamber itself the vacuum pump like NEG coated chamber, has been developed. After sputtering the inner surface of the titanium chamber, we obtained clear evidence that shows the chamber acts as a vacuum pump. We have also tried to make a titanium chamber with a getter function only by baking. Dependence of the getter characteristics on the baking temperature will also be reported.

We focused on one of accident tolerant fuel (ATF) materials, Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Fe-Cr-Al Steel (FeCrAl-ODS). There is a reasonable prospect that FeCrAl-ODS is applied to BWRs, but relatively high neutron absorption should be compensated. To decrease adverse neutron economic impact, thin FeCrAl-ODS cladding was designed, and we evaluated characteristics of a core into which 9$$times$$9 Advanced BWR (ABWR) bundles with thin FeCrAl-ODS claddings were loaded. Thin FeCrAl-ODS water rods and channel boxes were also applied. We confirmed that FeCrAl-ODS core reactivity was sufficient by increasing enrichment of UO$$_{2}$$ fuel under the limit of 5 wt%. Moreover, some representative FeCrAl-ODS core characteristics were comparable to zircaloy core. We also confirmed that fuel thermal-mechanical behaviors of thin FeCrAl-ODS cladding at normal operation and transient conditions were acceptable. These results led to a conclusion that FeCrAl-ODS was applicable to BWR in the analysis range of this study.

Magnetocaloric effect of Sr-substituted BaFeO$$_{3}$$ in the liquid nitrogen and natural gas temperature regions

We have investigated the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of Ba$$_{1-x}$$Sr$$_{x}$$Fe$$^{4+}$$O$$_{3}$$ (x$$underline{<}$$0.2), a series of cubic perovskites showing a field-induced transition from helical antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism. The maximum magnetic entropy change (-$$Delta$$S$$_{max}$$) at 50 kOe varies from $$sim$$ 5.8 J kg$$^{-1}$$K$$^{-1}$$ (x=0) to $$sim$$ 4.9 J kg$$^{-1}$$K$$^{-1}$$ (x=0.2), while the refrigerant capacity remains almost the same at $$sim$$165 J kg$$^{-1}$$. Interestingly, the temperature of -$$Delta$$S$$_{max}$$ decreases from $$sim$$116 K to $$sim$$77 K with increasing x, providing this series of rare-earth-free oxides with potential as a magnetic refrigerant for the liquefaction of nitrogen and natural gas.

Electronic structure of BaFeO$$_{3}$$ studied by X-ray spectroscopy

We investigated the electronic structure of BaFeO$$_{3}$$ by using HAXPES and XAS measurements and first principle studies. The experimental and theoretical results indicated that BaFeO$$_{3}$$ is a negative charge transfer compound. We concluded that the on-site Coulomb energy and the strong hybridization between Fe-3d and O-2p orbitals play a very important role of emergence of negative charge transfer. And we found the new structure in the Fe-2p XPS spectrum and concluded this structure is originated from non-local screening.

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) of BiNi$$_{1_x}$$Fe$$_x$$O$$_3$$ is investigated by dilatometric curves, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. All samples (x=0.05-0.15) shows large NTE with the coefficient of linear thermal expansion which induced by charge transfer between Bi$$^{5+}$$ and Ni$$^{2+}$$ in the controlled temperature range near room temperature. Compared with Bi$$_{1_x}$$Ln$$_x$$NiO$$_3$$ (Ln: rare-earth elements), the thermal hysteresis that causes a problem for practical application is suppressed because random distribution of Fe in the Ni site changes the first order transition to second order-like transition.

Magnetocaloric effect of field-induced ferromagnet BaFeO$$_{3}$$

We have investigated the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of a perovskite oxide, BaFeO$$_{3}$$, that shows ferromagnetism by the aid of a small external field of about 0.3 T below the Curie temperature T$$_{C}$$ = 111 K. The magnetization is found to change almost reversibly in both field and temperature cycles. Hence, magnetic and thermal hysteretic losses are negligibly low during refrigeration, a property that is suitable for application. The reversible MCE is likely to arise from the absence of an orbital magnetic moment of Fe ions which are essentially in the Fe$$^{3+}$$L state (L: ligand hole). The magnetic entropy change and refrigerant capacity near the T$$_{C}$$ are about 5.8 J kg$$^{-1}$$ K$$^{-1}$$ and about 172 J kg$$^{-1}$$, respectively, both of which are comparable to those of ferromagnetic perovskite manganites. As BaFeO$$_{3}$$ contains no rare metals and is stable against corrosion, the material can be regarded as a candidate refrigerant material.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has responsibility to procure 19 structures for ITER toroidal field (TF) coils as in-kind components. JAEA plans to use materials specified in the material section of "Codes for Fusion Facilities; Rules on Superconducting Magnet Structure (2008)" issued by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) in 2008. Large forged products were produced and their mechanical properties at 4K were evaluated. In addition, the following activities have been performed; (1) to optimize the design of each weld type identified in the manufacturing sequence, (2) to qualify typical welding procedure including repair, (3) to establish welding techniques other than narrow gap TIG welding with FMYJJ1, (4) to demonstrate the manufacturing procedures through manufacture of 1-m mockups and full-scale segments of TFC structure. This paper describes the results of material qualification and industrialization activities of manufacturing processes of ITER TFC structure.

TF coil structures, which support large electromagnetic force generated in TF coils under the cryogenic temperature (about 4K), are the mega welding structures composed of coil case and support structures made of high strength and high toughness stainless steel. JAEA started the study on welding trials for heavy thickness materials since 2008 and is planning of full scale mock-up model fabrication for main sub-components (1 set of inboard side and 1set of outboard side) in 2010 in order to investigate the technical issues for manufacturing of TF coil structures. This paper introduces the results on welding trials and status of full scale mock-up model fabrication to confirm the validity of welding technology and manufacturing design before fabricating actual products.

The Beam Based Alignment (BBA) of the BPM is inevitable for precise and absolute beam position measurements. Even though careful fabrication and installation of the BPM detector, it has to be calibrated by using the beam. Usually, it requires that the individual quadrupole magnet is able to be controlled. However, it is not always that case. In addition, scanning over the all BPM is time consuming procedure. The BBA method under coupled QM environment would help to reduce time for calibration. It presents general formula and experiences at J-PARC RCS and parts of results are compared with the ordinal method at J-PARC MR.

A new experimental technique was developed for detecting structure changes at electrode/electrolyte interface of lithium cell using X-ray reflectometry and two-dimensional model electrodes with a restricted lattice-plane. The electrodes were constructed with an epitaxial film of LiCoO$$_{2}$$ synthesized by pulsed laser deposition method. The anisotropic properties were confirmed by electrochemical measurements. ${it Ex situ}$ X-ray reflectivity measurements indicated that the impurity layer existed on the as-grown LiCoO$$_{2}$$ was dissolved and a new SEI layer with lower density was formed after soaking into the electrolyte. ${it In situ}$ X-ray reflectivity measurements indicated that the surface roughness of the intercalation (1 1 0) plane increased with applying voltages, while no significant changes in surface morphology were observed for the intercalation non-active (0 0 3) plane during the pristine stage of the charge-discharge process.
