Hydrogenation of silicon-bearing hexagonal close-packed iron and its implications for density deficits in the inner core

To investigate silicon effects on the hydrogen-induced volume expansion of iron, neutron diffraction and X-ray diffraction experiments were conducted to examine hcp-Fe$$_{0.95}$$Si$$_{0.05}$$ under high pressures and high temperatures. Neutron diffraction experiments were performed on the deuterated hcp-Fe$$_{0.95}$$Si$$_{0.05}$$ at 13.5 GPa and 900 K, and at 12.1 GPa and 300 K. By combining the P-V-T equation of state of hcp-Fe$$_{0.95}$$Si$$_{0.05}$$, present results indicate that the hydrogen-induced volume expansion of hcp-Fe$$_{0.95}$$Si$$_{0.05}$$ is 10% greater than that of pure hcp iron. Using the obtained values, we estimated the hydrogen content that would reproduce the density deficit in the inner core, which was 50% less than that without the effect of silicon. Possible hydrogen content, $$x$$, in the inner core and the outer core was calculated to be 0.07 and 0.12-0.15, respectively, when reproducing the density deficit of the inner core with hcp-Fe$$_{0.95}$$Si$$_{0.05}$$Hx.

Chemical composition of insoluble residue generated at the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant

The characteristics of insoluble residues in fine suspension at the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant were analyzed. The insoluble residues were washed with oxalic acid solution to dissolve zirconium molybdate residues. XRD profiles of unwashed residues showed the presence of a noble metal alloy, zirconium molybdate, and zirconia, but zirconium molybdate was not found after washing. More than 50% of the Sb-125 and Pu in thee residues was washed out as well. The noble metal alloy composed of Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, and Pd occupied more than 90% of the total weight of 12 elements (Ca, Cr, Fe, Ni, Zr, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Te, and U) found in the residues. In consideration of the chemical forms of 12 elements, the alloy-to-residue weight ratio was evaluated to be 64% and 78% with and without 18% of an unknown component, respectively.

Control rod worth evaluation for the Monju restart core

The present paper describes the evaluation of the control rod worth data obtained in the Monju restart core. The best-estimate value and its uncertainty are evaluated in detail. As in the criticality evaluation, data obtained in the previous test is evaluated in the same level of detail. The correlation in the uncertainties is also evaluated among different control rods and tests of the previous and the restart cores. Based on the evaluated data, calculation accuracy is investigated with JENDL-3.3 and JENDL-4.0. It is confirmed that the calculation accuracy is within the experimental uncertainty of 2% for each layer and $$^{10}$$B content. A reduction in the uncertainty related to the delayed neutron fraction is effective for a further improvement in the calculation accuracy.

JAEA is responsible for the procurement of 9 toroidal field (TF) coils as Japanese Domestic Agency. JAEA had started several trials to successfully develop technologies for the TF coil manufacture since March 2009, and performed one-third scale trials aiming at qualifying and optimizing the procedures of the TF coil fabrication. The fabricated double pancakes (DPs) were successfully put into the profile with tolerances from zero to 1.5 mm. These tolerances correspond to 0.06% accuracy in the conductor length. The geometry of the DP was changed after heat treatment. Heat treatment procedure to avoid such deformation should be developed or the change of winding geometry should be taken into account in the fabrication of the TF coils. The one-third scale DP was successfully impregnated. Although exothermal reaction is given to take place during curing in the blended resin, we successfully cured the one-third scale DP.

Acceleration of a 17mA 100keV/u C$$^{6+}$$ ion beam has been successfully achieved with an RFQ linac by means of "Direct injection scheme". The Direct injection scheme is a new scheme for injecting an ion beam from a laser ion source to the RFQ linac without a low energy beam transport line to avoid a beam loss due to the space charge effect. The high current C$$^{6+}$$ beam is required for single turn injection to a synchrotron to reduce the size of synchrotron magnets. The high current C$$^{6+}$$ beam produced by an ion source with a Nd-YAG laser was injected to the RFQ linac by the Direct injection scheme. It has been proved experimentally that the fully-stripped carbon ion beam with a current more than 10mA can be accelerated by the RFQ linac.

We have been studying a new heavy-ion production technique called "direct plasma injection scheme", DPIS, since 2000. A new radio frequency quadrupole "RFQ" designed especially for the DPIS was commissioned in 2004 and very intense carbon beam was successfully obtained, reaching more than 60 mA accelerated current from the RFQ. Most of the contents of the accelerated beam was carbon 4+ as verified by beam analysis.

An experimental facility called the Module for TRU High Temperature Chemistry (TRU-HITEC) was installed in the Back-end Cycle Key Elements Research Facility (BECKY) of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Safety Engineering Research Facility (NUCEF) for the basic studies of the behavior of the transuranium elements (TRU) in pyrochemical reprocessing and oxide fuels. TRU-HITEC consists of three alpha/gamma cells shielded by steel and polyethylene and a glove box shielded by leaded acrylic resin, where experimental apparatuses have been equipped and a high purity argon gas atmosphere is maintained. In the facility 10 g of $$^{241}$$Am as well as the other TRU of Np, Pu and Cm can be handled. This report summarizes the outline, structure, performance and interior apparatuses of the facility, and is the result of the joint research between the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and three electric power companies of Tokyo Electric Power Co., Tohoku Electric Power Co. and the Japan Atomic Power Co.

The carbon beam from a Nd-YAG laser ion source was accelerated successfully by an RFQ linac using Direct injection scheme. The "Direct injection scheme" is the way to inject an ion beam to the RFQ linac without a low energy beam transport line to avoid space charge effect due to a high intensity beam from the laser ion source. About 30mA of a carbon beam was detected by a faraday cup just behind the RFQ linac.

The program was planned and has been carried out to develop of the reactivity feedback effect measurement techniques under sub-critical condition in the start-up experiment for fast reactors. Properties of real insoluble residues generated at Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant were measured by using SEM/EPMA. The simulated insoluble residues were prepared by conventional powder metallurgy technique, and properties such as particle size were compared with those of real ones.
