To study the performance of the TES detector with a high-intensity pulsed charged-particle beam, we measured X-ray spectra with a pulsed muon beam at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) in Japan. We found substantial temporal shifts of the X-ray energy correlated with the arrival time of the pulsed muon beam, which was reasonably explained by pulse pileup due to the incidence of energetic particles from the initial pulsed beam.

X rays emitted from muonic iron atoms using a superconducting transition-edge-type sensor microcalorimeter. The energy resolution of 5.2 eV in FWHM allowed us to observe the asymmetric broad profile of the electronic characteristic
and
X rays together with the hypersatellite
X rays around 6 keV. This signature reflects the time-dependent screening of the nuclear charge by the negative muon and the
-shell electrons, accompanied by electron side-feeding. Assisted by a simulation, this data clearly reveals the electronic

-shell hole production and their temporal evolution during the muon cascade process.

High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors; JSME Series in Thermal and Nuclear Power Generation, Vol.5, 464 Pages, 2021/02
As a general overview of the research and development of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in JAEA, this book describes the achievements by the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) on the designs, key component technologies such as fuel, reactor internals, high temperature components, etc., and operational experience such as rise-to-power tests, high temperature operation at 950
C, safety demonstration tests, etc. In addition, based on the knowledge of the HTTR, the development of designs and component technologies such as high performance fuel, helium gas turbine and hydrogen production by IS process for commercial HTGRs are described. These results are very useful for the future development of HTGRs. This book is published as one of a series of technical books on fossil fuel and nuclear energy systems by the Power Energy Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

In this study, we prepared samples under two different conditions, (1) 810
C, for 600 min, and (2) 850
C, for 720 min. A depth-profile analysis of the surfaces of the samples is conducted through Doppler broadening (DB) measurements of positron annihilation
rays using a slow positron beam. It was indicated that many of positrons annihilated in defects near the surface. According to the TEM image, there are nano-crystal grains near the surface and then positrons can diffuse in the grains and annihilate in defects at the grain boundaries. Furthermore, DB measurements indicated that there is a depth dependence on the chemical composition where positrons annihilate. EDS spectroscopy measurements also indicated that there is a depth dependence of impurities such as Vanadium. These results indicated change of the chemical composition at the grain boundaries.

The surface can be exceedingly hardened by nitriding treatment that initiates defects, but there are some difficulties on use of titanium nitride because the layer can be exfoliated by stress. Therefore, we prepared samples in two different treatment conditions, (1) 810
C 600 min and (2) 850
C 720 min and performed depth profile analysis of Doppler broadening of positron annihilation
-rays (DB) for these samples. According to a calculation of nitrogen diffusion depth, the nitride layer should be only about 0.05-0.1
m. However, the depth profile analysis of the DB measurement indicated that the defects introduced by nitriding treatment extended to a depth of 0.5
m.

The researches on engineering technology in the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) plan consists of (1) research on engineering technology deep underground, and (2) research on engineering technology as a basis of geological disposal. The former research is mainly aimed in this study, which is categorized in (a) development of design and construction planning technologies, (b) development of construction technologies, (c) development of countermeasure technologies, and (d) development of technologies for security. In this study, the researches on engineering technology are being conducted in these four categories by using data measured during construction as a part of the second phase of the MIU plan.

The Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU), one of the main facilities in Japan for research and development of the technology for high-level radioactive waste disposal, is under construction in Mizunami City. In planning the construction, it was necessary to get reliable information on the bedrock conditions, specifically the rock mass stability and hydrogeology. Therefore, borehole investigations were conducted before excavations started. The results indicated that large water inflow could be expected during the excavation around the Ventilation Shaft at GL-200m and GL-300m Access/Research Gallery. In order to reduce water inflow, pre-excavation grouting was conducted before excavation of shafts and research tunnels. Grouting is the injection of material such as cement into a rock mass to stabilize and seal the rock. This report describes the knowledge and lessons learned during the planning and conducting of pre-excavation grouting.

The Mizunami Underground Laboratory Project is a comprehensive research project investigating the deep underground environment within crystalline rock. The project goals of the project from surface-based investigation phase (Phase I) through to operation phase (Phase III) are: to establish techniques for investigation, analysis and assessment of the deep geological environment, and to develop a range of engineering for deep underground application. Currently, the project is under the construction phase (Phase II). One of the Phase II goals, which is for the project goal, was set to develop and revise models of the geological environment using the investigation results obtained during excavation, and determine and assess changes in the geological environment in response to excavation. This document presents the overview of results of the research and development on "hydrogeology" performed in fiscal year 2008, with regard to the Phase II goal.

The research and development program on nuclear production of hydrogen was started on January in 1997 as a study consigned by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. A hydrogen production system connected to the HTTR is being designed to be able to produce hydrogen of about 4000 m3/h by steam reforming of natural gas, using a nuclear heat of 10 MW supplied by the HTTR. In order to confirm controllability, safety and performance of key components in the HTTR hydrogen production system, the facility for an out-of-pile test was constructed on the scale of approximately 1/30 of the HTTR hydrogen production system. Essential tests are also carried out to obtain detailed data for safety review and development of analytical codes. Other basic studies on the hydrogen production technology of thermochemical water splitting called an iodine sulfur (IS) process, has been carried out for more effective and various uses of nuclear heat. This paper describes the present status and a future plan on the R&D of the HTTR hydrogen production systems in JAERI.

Tono Geoscience Center (TGC), Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC) has been conducting a wide range of geoscientific research in order to build a firm scientific and technological basis for the research and development of geological disposal. One of the major components of the ongoing geoscientific research programme is the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) project in the Tono region, central Japan. The R&D work of the MIU project has the following main goals: (1)Develop comprehensive investigation techniques for the geological environment. (2)Acquire data on the deep geological environment. (3)Develop a range of engineering techniques for deep underground application. The development of the MIU will occur in three overlapping phases over a 20-year life cycle: Phase One: Surface-based Investigations, began in 1996; Phase Two: Construction and Phase Three: Operations, have not started. The MIU site has been investigated by geological, geophysical, hydrogeological, hydrochemical and rock mechanical surveys on the surface and in the boreholes. To date, ground geophysics and investigation in three 1,000m-deep boreholes have been carried out. The hydro monitoring equipment has set up. Based on the information, modelling work on the geological, hydrogeological and rock mechanical conditions at the MIU site has been conducted. The groundwater simulation has been carried out in order to confirm the usefuless of the hydrogeological modelling methodology. Technical knowledge and experience have been accumulated, which allow application of the methodologies and techniques to characterize the deep geological environment in crystalline rock. The results from these R&D activities were used as prime inputs for the H12 report that JNC submitted to the Japanese Government in 1999. Results from such R&D are also acknowledged by other geoscientific studies in general. JNC will synthesize the results from R&D activities to provide a scientific and ...
