Extraction chromatgraphy technology for trivalent minor actinide (MA(III) ; Am(III) and Cm(III)) recovery from the solution generated by an extraction process in reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel has been developed. A fine particle is generated in the solution. The fine particle must be removed before MA recovery operation, because that leads clogging of the extraction chlomatography column. In order to prevent clogging the column, filtration system utilizing porous silica beads packed column has been designed. In this study, a fine particle trapping system was developed and particle removal performance of the system was experimentally evaluated using alumina particles as simulated fine particle. Column experiments revealed that the fine particle with the particle size from 0.12 to 15 m is cause of clogging of the filtration column. Since simulated fine particles were trapped on filtration experiments, a filtration system using the porous silica beads column is practical,

Herein, we performed a quantitative and systematic investigation to discern the mechanisms by which hydrogen trapped at coherent/semi-coherent interfaces of precipitates could influence macroscopic hydrogen embrittlement by modulating the coherent interface of MgZn
through aging. To explore this hydrogen embrittlement phenomenon based on hydrogen trapping at the precipitate interface, we determined the hydrogen trapping energy of the semi-coherent MgZn
interface via first-principles calculations (0.56 eV/atom). Hydrogen partitioning of all hydrogen trapping sites, including vacancies, grain boundaries, and coherent and semi-coherent MgZn
interfaces, revealed that in overaged alloys, over 90% of the hydrogen was sequestered at semi-coherent interfaces. Owing to the inherent characteristics of the MgZn
interface, the hydrogen sequestered at the semi-coherent interface decreased the interfacial cohesive energy, causing semispontaneous decohesion of the interface and quasicleavage fracture in the Al-Zn-Mg alloys. These results implied that intergranular fracture was not directly induced by hydrogen trapped at grain boundaries but rather by the decohesion of precipitate interfaces along grain boundaries.

Control of insoluble sludge from fuel dissolution process is one of the important issues to secure the safety in reprocessing plant operation. In order to achieve the higher sludge recovery in the clarification stage, new clarification system which is an integrated technology of centrifugal device and filter unit has been developed for spent MOX fuel reprocessing. In this study, over-all clarification performance of this integrated system was evaluated on engineering scale. As results, total sludge recovery rate of more than 99.5 % was achieved in all test conditions by this system from the engineering test and this new clarification system showed excellent clarification performance. The sludge recovery rate of centrifugal device was influenced by test conditions and was in the range from 87 to 98 %. This study showed this technology is one of the promising clarification systems to improve the performance of sludge recovery greatly.

It was planned in a strategic roadmap of fast reactor decided by Inter-Ministerial Council for Nuclear Power Japan in 2022 to start a conceptual design of a demonstration reactor from 2024 with a background of accumulated knowledge and experiences of SFR development. For example, a design and lifecycle simulation/evaluation system named ARKADIA has been developed to accelerate such design works. It will enable to take into account plant lifecycle, e.g., operation and maintenance, to the plant design and optimize it based on simulations and knowledgebase. This paper shows research progresses of ARKADIA, safety design and evaluations, codes and standards, fuel cycle, and SFR development projects in Japan.

H accumulation at the interface of precipitates in Al alloy is considered to cause embrittlement. However, there is no quantitative knowledge regarding the interaction between H distribution and stress field near cracks. In this study, using a multi-modal three-dimensional image-based simulation combining the crystal plasticity finite element method and H diffusion analysis, we tried to capture the stress distribution near the crack, its influence on the H distribution, and the probability of crack initiation in the experimental condition. As a result, it was found that grain boundary cracks transition to quasi-cleavage cracks in the region where the cohesive energy of the semi-coherent interface of MgZn precipitates decreases due to H accumulation near the tip. We believe the present simulation method successfully bridges nanoscale delamination and macroscale brittle fracture.

SCC of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy could initiate and propagate in the potential crack region where the H concentration exceeded a critical value, in which the nanoscopic H-induced decohesion of -MgZn
precipitates resulted in macroscopic cracking. External H that penetrated the alloy from the environment played a crucial role during the SCC of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy by generating gradient-distributed H-affected zones near the crack tips, which made Al alloys in water environment more sensitive to SCC. Additionally, the pre-existing internal H was driven toward the crack tips during plastic deformation. It was involved in the SCC and made contributions to both the cracks initiation and propagation.

In this study, it was confirmed that the spectral shape of Eu complexes in the adsorbents varied depending on the kinds of extractants, and the correlation between the change in the spectra and the structures of Eu complexes was investigated.

We propose the dispersion of Mn-based second-phase particles as a novel technique for preventing 7xxx aluminum alloy hydrogen embrittlement. In this study, the deformation and fracture behaviors of high hydrogen 7xxx alloys containing 0.0% Mn and 0.6% Mn are observed in situ using synchrotron radiation X-ray tomography. The obtained macroscopic hydrogen embrittlement is quantitatively analyzed based on hydrogen partitioning in alloys. Adding 0.6% Mn, generating second-phase particles with high hydrogen trapping abilities, significantly suppresses hydrogen-induced quasicleavage fracture.

High level liquid waste generated from reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel is possible to form precipitations so called as sludge. The sludge will significantly influence on extraction chromatography technology for trivalent minor actinide (MA(III)) recovery. Applicability of a pre-column as a filter for removal of the sludge was experimentally evaluated. In this study, remote handling media exchanging experiments were carried out, and a concept of the pre-column system was proposed based on the results. The media of the pre-column was porous silica particle. Since the media formed block, it interfered water current on ejecting porous silica particle. It was better on trickling basis and using upper outlet than other system, but the operation to control the media block behavior and optimization of water flow is needed.
