Spallation and fragmentation cross sections for 168 MeV/nucleon $$^{136}$$Xe ions on proton, deuteron, and carbon targets

The spallation and fragmentation reactions of $$^{136}$$Xe induced by proton, deuteron and carbon at 168 MeV/nucleon were studied at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory via the inverse kinematics technique. The cross sections of the lighter products are larger in the carbon-induced reactions due to the higher total kinetic energy of carbon. The energy dependence was investigated by comparing the newly obtained data with previous results obtained at higher reaction energies. The experimental data were compared with the results of SPACS, EPAX, PHITS and DEURACS calculations. These data serve as benchmarks for the model calculations.

The structures of the neutron-rich $$^{69,71,73}$$Co isotopes were investigated via ($$p,2p$$) knockout reactions at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, RIKEN. Level schemes were reconstructed using the $$gamma-gamma$$ coincidence technique, with tentative spin-parity assignments based on the measured inclusive and exclusive cross sections. Comparison with shell-model calculations suggests coexistence of spherical and deformed shapes at low excitation energies in the $$^{69,71,73}$$Co isotopes.

Excited states in the $$N$$ = 40 isotone $$^{62}$$Ti were populated via the $$^{63}$$V($$p$$,$$2p$$)$$^{62}$$Ti reaction at $$sim$$200 MeV/nucleon at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the $$2_1^+ rightarrow 0_{rm gs}^+$$ and $$4_1^+ rightarrow 2_1^+$$ transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed Ti ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring $$^{64}$$Cr and $$^{66}$$Fe isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings.

Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for $$^{107}$$Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

Nuclear structure of $$^{76}$$Ni from the ($$p$$,$$2p$$) reaction

The nuclear structure of the $$^{76}$$Ni nucleus was investigated by ($$p$$,$$2p$$) reaction using a NaI(Tl) array to detect the deexciting prompt $$gamma$$ rays. A new transition with an energy of 2227 keV was identified by $$gamma gamma$$ and $$gamma gamma gamma$$ coincidences. Our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi, Nowacki, Poves, and Sieja interaction produced good candidates for the experimental proton hole states in the observed energy region, and the theoretical cross sections showed good agreement with the experimental values. Although we could not assign all the experimental states to the theoretical ones unambiguously, the results are consistent with a reasonably large Z = 28 shell gap for nickel isotopes in accordance with previous studies.

Laser ion production has been studied for downsizing of the accelerator dedicated for cancer therapy. For optimization of various parameters such as pre-pulse condition, target position, laser spot size on target, laser pulse width and so on, time of flight (TOF) measurement utilizing the detected signal by a plastic scintillation counter played an essential role for real time measurement. Protons up to 900 keV and 600 keV are produced from the thin foil targets of Ti 3 micron and 5 micron in thickness, respectively. Modification of the energy distribution of the laser-produced ions with Maxwell distribution by utilizing an RF electric field synchronized to the pulse laser, which is the rotation of the ion beam in the longitudinal phase space (phase rotation), has been demonstrated for the first time.

International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF), being developed by EU, JA, RF and US, is a deuteron-lithium (Li) reaction neutron source for fusion materials testing. In the end of 2002, 3 year Key Element technology Phase (KEP) to reduce the key technology risk factors has been completed. This paper describes these KEP tasks results. To evaluate Li flow characteristics, a water and Li flow experiments have been done. To develop Li purification system, evaluation of nitrogen and tritium gettering materials have been done. Conceptual design of remote handling and basic experiment have been donde. In addition, safety analysis and diganostics design have been done. In the presentation, the latest design and future prospects will be also summarized.

Glass formation at the limit of insufficient network formers

Inorganic glasses normally exhibit a network of interconncted covalent-bonded structural elements that has no long-range order. In silicate glasses the network formers are based on SiO$$_4$$-tetrahedra interconnected via oxygen atoms at the corners. Conventional wisdom then implies that alkaline and alkaline-earth orthosilicate materials cannot be vitrified because they do not contain sufficient network forming SiO$$_2$$ to establish the needed interconnectivity. We have studied a bulk magnesium orthosilicate glass obtained by containerless melting-and-cooling. We find that the role of network former is largely taken on by corner- and edge-sharing of highly distorted ionic Mg-O species that adopt 4-, 5- and 6-coordination with oxygen. The results suggest that similar novel glassy phases may be found in the containerless environment of interstellar space.

This paper describes the latest design of the IFMIF liquid Li target system reflecting the KEP results. Future prospects will be also summarized. To handle an averaged heat flux of 1 GW/m2 under a continuous 10 MW D beam deposition, a high-speed Li flow of 20 m/s, a double reducer nozzle and a concaved flow are applied to the target design. Hydraulic characteristics of the Li target design have been validated in a water jet experiment. To obtain a control scenario of the Li loop in an accident of the D beam trip, a transient analysis has been done. To control tritium and impurities in Li, a cold trap and two kinds of hot trap are adopted in Li purification loop. To maintain reliable continuous operation, various diagnostics are attached to the target assembly. To exchange the target assembly and back wall, a remote handling system with a multi axis arm and welding/cutting tool are designed. As an option, design of a replaceable back wall with a mechanical seal is being in progress. In a next phase of IFMIF beyond 2004, a Li test loop will be constructed for engineering validation.

Neutron diffraction measurements of the structure of an orthosilicate glass: Mg$$_{2}$$SiO$$_{4}$$

The structure of olivine-composition glasses is of considerable interest in both geology and glass-science. Olivine is one of the most common minerals in the Earth's upper mantle, and properties of olivine-rich melts are relevant to a variety of petrologic problems. Despite their prevalence and novelty, such glasses has not been studied thoroughly due to difficulties associated with their synthesis. Recently, Weber et al successfully prepared bulk olivine glass with the forsterite-composition Mg$$_{2}$$SiO$$_{4}$$ using a containerless technique and initiated a neutron-diffraction investigation of the short-range structure of the glass. In this study, we present a result of the pulsed neutron diffraction experiment on the forsterite-composition glass. The neutron diffraction analysis suggests that highly distorted MgO$$_{n}$$ polyhedra are the major networking structural units in the forsterite-composition glass.
