The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

"R&D Project on Irradiation Damage Management Technology for Structural Materials of Long-life Nuclear Plant" was carried out from FY2006 in a fund of a trust enterprise of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The coupled irradiations or single irradiation by JOYO fast reactor and JRR-3 thermal reactor were performed for about two years. The irradiation specimens are very important materials to establish of "Evaluation of Irradiation Damage Indicator" in this research. For the acquisition of the examination specimens irradiated by the JOYO and JRR-3, we summarized about the overall plan, the work process and the results for the study to utilize these reactors and some facilities of hot laboratory (WASTEF, JMTR-HL, MMF and FMF) of the Oarai Research-and-Development Center and the Nuclear Science Research Institute in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.

Development of a neutron reflectometer SUIREN at JRR-3

A new neutron reflectometer "SUIREN" has been developed and started its operation at the research reactor JRR-3 of JAEA in 2006. SUIREN (Apparatus for Surface and Interface investigations with Reflection of Neutrons) provides monochromatic neutron beam with wavelength of 3.8 ${AA}$ and vertical sample geometry, which is suitable for studies on interfaces involving solid layers of soft materials, magnetic materials, neutron mirrors and many other things. Collimated neutron intensity is about 2.1$$times$$10$$^4$$ $$sim$$ 2.6$$times$$10$$^4$$ n/s/cm$$^{2}$$ with =0.08 deg at the sample position. Background is as low as 4.5$$times$$10$$^{-3}$$ n/s when a local beam shutter is closed. A demonstration experiment showed that specular reflectivity of a silicon substrate of 3 inches in diameter can be measured down to 10$$^{-6}$$ over 0 $$<$$ Qz $$<$$ 0.22 ${AA}$ $$^{-1}$$ in 27 hours. This paper describes the beam-line and components of the SUIREN reflectometer, some results of test measurements and future plans.

Design of "NeutrOn Beam-line for Observation & Research Use (NOBORU)" for JSNS of J-PARC

Total 23 neutron beam-lines will be installed for JSNS in the J-PARC project. One of them is assigned for the Materials and Life Science Facility (MLF), and the MLF will construct a neutron beam-line to demonstrate and monitor neutronic performance of JSNS. The neutron beam-line was accordingly named as "Neutron Beam-line for Obserbation and Research Use (NOBORU)". Major parts of the NOBORU, i.e., beam ducts, shield, a beam stop, slits, a cabin for measurement, a pillar crane, a sample table, etc., have been ordered in March 2004, and installation will be completed in 2007. A T0 chopper, a frame-overlap chopper, detector systems, samples, etc. will be ordered later on. The sample position is at 14 m from the decoupled moderator. Approximate sample room dimensions are 3 $$times$$ 2.5 m in area and 3 m in height. A shield structure was determined by shielding calculations in which detailed 3-D structure was considered. The design of NOBORU will be presented in the session.

In order to estimate the total cost of the building, we started the shielding analysis of the beamline using MCNPX and PHITS, where the latest beamline design and the neutron spectrum have been adopted.

3-D shielding calculation method for 1-MW JSNS

A three-dimensional (3-D) shielding calculation model for MCNPX was produced for shielding design of 1-MW JSNS. The model included simplified target-moderator-reflector assembly, helium-vessel and neutron beam extraction pipes, shutters, shield blocks, gaps and void spaces between these components, and so on, and could treat streaming effects precisely. The particle splitting and kill method with cell importance parameters was adopted as a variance reduction method. The cell importance parameters for such a large target station of about 15 m in diameter and 12 m in hight in which neutron fluxes attenuated more than 12 orders of magnitude could be determined appropriately by automated iteration calculations. This calculation procedure enabled detailed 3-D shielding design calculations for the whole target station in a short time, i.e., within 2 days, and contributed for progress of shielding designs of JSNS.

A New method for neutron-beam-line shielding calculation

A method for neutron-beam-line shielding calculation with a Monte Carlo code was newly developed. In the first step, components inside the biological shield such as a target-moderator-reflector-assembly and a neutron-beam-line were modeled, and a neutron current distribution along a duct of the neutron-beam-line was calculated. In the second step, decreases of neutron current along the beam-line were regarded as source terms for the beam-line shield, and required beam-line shield thickness was calculated. The most remarkable feature of this method was accurate treatment of the neutron source term distribution along the beam-line in the second step calculation. The followings were evaluated for JSNS by applying this method: (1) neutron-beam-line shield thickness with an empirical formula for estimating shield thickness conveniently, (2) beam stop sizes, (3) dose rates at a sample position when a shutter was closed, and (4) activation level of a To-chopper blade. These results gave conditions for determining the layout of 23 neutron-beam-lines in the experimental hall.

3-dimensional shielding design for a spallation neutron source facility in the high-intensity proton accelerator project

Evaluation of shielding performance for a spallation neutron source facility in the J-PARC Project is important from a viewpoint of radiation safety and optimization of arrangement of components. This report describes evaluated results for the shielding performance with modeling three-dimensionally whole structural components including gaps between them in detail. A Monte Carlo calculation method with MCNPX2.2.6 code and LA-150 library was adopted. Streaming and void effects, optimization of shield for cost reduction and optimization of arrangement of structures such as shutters were investigated. Horizontal required shield thicknesses were ranged from about 6.5m to 7.5m as a function of neutron beam line angles. A shutter mechanism for a horizontal neutron reflectometer that was directed downward was devised, and it was shown that the shielding performance of the shutter was acceptable. An optimal biological shield configuration was finally determined according to the calculated results.

The diagnostic system of JT-60U (JT-60upgrade) is composed of about 50 individual diagnostic devices. Recently, the detailed radial profile measurements of plasma parameters have been improved, so that the internal structure of plasmas has been explored. The understanding of plasma confinement has been enhanced by density and temperature fluctuation measurements using a mm-wave reflectometer and electron cyclotron emission measurements respectively. In addition, the real-time control experiments of electron density, neutron yield, radiated power and electron temperature gradient have been carried out successfully by corresponding diagnostic devices. These measurements and the real time control contribute to improving plasma performance. Diagnostic devices for next generation fusion devices such as a CO2 laser interferometer/polarimeter and a CO2 laser collective Thomson scattering system have been developed.
