The cluster structure of the neutron-rich isotope $$^{10}$$Be has been probed via the ($$p,palpha$$) reaction. The triple differential cross-section was extracted and compared to distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction calculations performed in a microscopic framework using the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-R$"o$pke wave function and the wave function deduced from Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics calculations. The remarkable agreement between calculated and measured cross-sections in both shape and magnitude validates the description of the $$^{10}$$Be ground-state as a rather compact nuclear molecule.

A muon linac is under development for future muon g-2/EDM experiments at J-PARC. The linac provides a 212 MeV muon beam to an MRI-type compact storage ring. After the initial acceleration using the electrostatic field created by mesh and cylindrical electrodes, the muons are accelerated using four types of radio-frequency accelerators. To validate the linac design as a whole, end-to-end simulations were performed using General Particle Tracer. In addition, error studies were performed to investigate the effects on beam and spin dynamics of various errors in the accelerator components and input beam distribution. This paper describes the results of the end-to-end simulations and error studies.

Analysis of the electric double layer structure formed in an ionic liquid using neutron reflectivity

The ionic liquid/Si electrode interface was investigated using neutron reflectivity. We precisely elucidated the structure of the electrical double layer formed at 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([BMIM]TFSA)/Si(100) electrode interface with the orientation of the [BMIM]TFSA molecule using a partially deuterated [BMIM]TFSA. The results revealed that [BMIM]TFSA molecules form a layered structure. Cation and anion molecules are alternatingly stacked and molecules in the first three layers are horizontally oriented to the electrode surface at E = -1.2 V, i.e., on the negatively charged electrode surface. It was also revealed that the imidazole ring in [BMIM] cation is parallel to the electrode surface.

We combined the deuterium labeling and neutron reflectivity techniques to determine the fine structure of the electric double layer structure in an imidazolium ionic liquid (IL). For this, a simple and large scale deuteration method for imidazolium ILs was developed, where the deuteration level can be systematically controlled.

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $$a_{mu}=(g-2)/2$$ and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $$d_{mu}$$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $$a_{mu}$$ and $$d_{mu}$$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon g-2 experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $$a_{mu}$$ is a statistical uncertainty of 450 parts per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $$1.5times10^{-21}$$ e$$cdot$$cm.

The iron phosphate glass (IPG) medium is known to be a high-efficiency glass medium, therefore we try to evaluate its applicability to immobilize sludge bearing radioactive nuclides arising from treatment of contaminated water at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. For this study, many physical and chemical properties of target materials are necessary to evaluate the behaviours of IPG medium and its waste forms. Inevitably, it will entail the need for many and varied types of experiments to be carried out under high temperature. It is therefore rational to apply appropriate theoretical analysis first so as to reduce the number of experimental run. For this reason, some necessary thermodynamic values for theoretical analysis were estimated by CALPHAD approach followed by making up the calculated phase diagrams. By comparison with experimental results, they were found to be reliable for evaluating the behaviours of IPG medium and its waste forms.

High intensity laser-plasma interaction has attracted considerable interest for a number of years. The laser-plasma interaction is accompanied by generation of various charged particle beams. Results of simultaneous novel measurements of electron-induced photonuclear neutrons (photoneutron), which are a diagnostic of the laser-plasma interaction, are proposed to use for optimization of the laser-plasma ion generation. The proposed method is demonstrated by the laser irradiation with the intensity os 1$$times$$10$$^{21}$$ W/cm$$^{2}$$ on the metal foil target. The photoneutrons are measured by using NE213 liquid scintillation detectors. Heavy-ion signal is registered with the CR39 track detector simultaneously. The measured signals of the electron-induced photoneutrons are well reproduced by using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS). The results obtained provide useful approach for analyzing the various laser based ion beams.

As research and development activities for MOX fuel pellet production, oxidation and reduction behaviors of MOX powders were investigated by thermogravimetry and X-ray diffraction measurements. It was observed that the oxidation limit decreased with oxidizing temperature and Pu content. The MOX powders showed a two-step oxidation and kinetic stability under non-stoichiometry. The oxidation rates were evaluated from the isothermal oxidation tests. It was found that the reduction temperature of M$$_{4}$$O$$_{9}$$ + M$$_{3}$$O$$_{8}$$ was higher than that of M$$_{4}$$O$$_{9}$$. This indicated that the reduction of M$$_{4}$$O$$_{9}$$ was prevented by the existence of M$$_{3}$$O$$_{8}$$. Activation energy of the reduction was derived from the non-isothermal reduction tests. The data are expected to contribute to establishing a control technique for O/M ratio during MOX powder storage and pellet production.

A simulator for materials testing reactors has been developed to be utilized for human resource development with an advancement of technology in mind. The simulator is designed based on the JMTR, and the reactor core is modeled with REMARK$$^{TM}$$, in which a 3-dimensional, 4-energy group, time dependent, diffusion theory model is applied. The thermo-hydraulic properties in the reactor vessel are modeled using RELAP5-HD$$^{TM}$$, which is the real-time version of RELAP5-3D code. REMARK$$^{TM}$$ interacts with the RELAP5-HD$$^{TM}$$ thermal hydraulic model by providing power to the moderator. The RELAP5-HD$$^{TM}$$ model, in return, provides thermal hydraulic feedback to the REMARK$$^{TM}$$ model. For the primary and secondary cooling loops, main heat exchangers, purification system and cooling towers, the 2-phase, 6-equation matrix solution modeling tool JTopmeret$$^{TM}$$ is used. The high fidelity level of modern simulators is not only a valuable tool for human resource training, but also an analysis tool for safety in normal/transient/accident conditions of materials testing reactors.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

The anthropogenic radionuclides, $$^{90}$$Sr, $$^{137}$$Cs and $$^{239+240}$$Pu, in the seawater column of the Japan Sea were measured during 1997-2000. The vertical profiles of radionuclide concentrations showed their typical features; exponential decrease with depth for the $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{137}$$Cs and surface minimum - subsurface maximum for the $$^{239+240}$$Pu, and there are no substantial differences between the present study and the previous ones. The area-averaged concentrations and the inventories of radionuclides in the Japan Sea are higher than those in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. In the spatial distributions, high inventory area extends and intrudes from the Japan Basin into the Yamato Basin. It is suggested that radionuclides sink by the vertical transport occurring mainly in the Japan Basin then advect into the Yamato Basin after detouring around the Yamato Rise, and finally, they are accumulated in the deep seawater of the Japan Sea.

Temperature control of a cyclotron magnet for stabilization of the JAERI AVF cyclotron beam

Frequent corrections of the magnetic field of the JAERI AVF cyclotron were required for keeping a beam current constant during long time operation. We observed correlation between the magnetic field and the temperature of the cyclotron magnet yoke by measuring the magnetic field with an NMR probe and the temperature with platinum resistance thermometers. The unstable phenomenon of a cyclotron beam was induced by temperature change in the magnet yoke caused mainly by thermal conduction from the main coil. To restrain the thermal conduction to the yoke, we have inserted temperature controlled copper plates between the yoke and the main coil. In addition, a temperature control system of the cooling water of the trim coils has been installed independent of the total cooling system for controlling the pole tip temperature. An optimum condition of the temperature control systems for stabilizing the magnetic field has been investigated.
