The sequestration of Co by newly formed BMOs readily progressed in parallel with the exogenous Mn, with higher efficiency than that in single Co solutions. This is attributed to a synergetic effect on Co sequestration through the formation of asbolane in Mn/Co binary systems.

Two fault segments were selected for reactivation studies, one across a coseismic rupture, the Shionohira site, and one across a non-coseismically ruptured segment, the Minakami-kita site. A series of water injections in sealed sections of boreholes set across the fault progressively bring the fault to rupture by a step-by-step decrease of the effective normal stress clamping the fault. While the fault is rupturing during these hydraulic stimulations, borehole displacements, fluid pressure and injection flowrate are continuously monitored. Then, the tests were analyzed using fully coupled hydromechanical modeling. The model was calibrated on field data, and a parametric study was conducted to examine the modes of fault reactivation. Coseismic surface rupture of the Shionohira fault showed a pure dilatant slip response to hydraulic tests, while the tectonically un-activated Itozawa fault (South) indicated a complex hybrid response to tests related to both a higher frictional and cohesive strengths of the fault. The analysis of the induced Shionohira slip event showed that it is reasonably modeled as a Coulomb rupture with an eventual dependency of friction on slip velocity, in good accordance with laboratory-derived rate-and-state friction data on the Shinohira gouge samples. In contrast, the Itozawa fault reactivation mechanism appears dominated by tensile failure with limited Coulomb shear failure. Thus, the applied protocol proves to be able to isolate significant differences in fault physical properties and rupture mechanisms between two segments of the same fault system, opening perspectives to better assess near-surface rupture effects, and therefore the safety of structures subject to large earthquakes.

Co-seismic surface ruptures in the Fukushima-ken Hamadori Earthquake of Mw 6.7 on April 11, 2011 exposed approximately 14 km trending NNW-SSE from Nameishi to northwest of Ishizumi Tsunaki of Tabito Town, Iwaki City and were newly named the Shionohira Fault. However, no surface ruptures appeared along an N-S trending active Kuruma fault extending 5 km south of the Shionohira Fault. Because of the proximity and similar strike, two locations in Shionohira Fault and one location in Kuruma fault were selected as the study area for the fault activity evaluation. The present study reports the results of a series of geological and drilling surveys, core observation, XRD, isotope, and fluid inclusion analyses, and water permeability test. The results obtained from the three locations offer a fundamental data base that can be utilized for fault activity evaluation by summarizing the geological, mineralogical, and fluid property characteristics of fault fracture zone.

Recent studies have revealed that topologically invariant states, such as edge states in topological insulators, can emerge not only in a fermionic electron system but also in a bosonic system, enabling nondissipative propagation of quasiparticles. Here we report the topologically nontrivial triplon bands measured by inelastic neutron scattering on the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized antiferromagnet BaCuSiOCl. The excitation spectrum exhibits two triplon bands that are clearly separated by a band gap due to a small alternation in interdimer exchange interaction, consistent with a refined crystal structure. By analytically modeling the triplon dispersion, we show that BaCuSiOCl is the first bosonic realization of the coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, where the presence of topologically protected edge states is prompted by a bipartite nature of the lattice.

This study describes the features of fractures and their fillings along with the long-term behavior of their hydrogeological structures in an underground environment based on the results of a geological investigation conducted at an underground facility in northern Kyushu. Fractures were classified into five groups on the basis of fracture orientation: A, B, C, D, and low-angle groups. The genesis of all fractures is the cooling process of granodiorite pluton. Almost all of the water-conducting fractures are included in the B group. Because a number of fracture fillings in the B group are filled by prehnite and crushed fragments of epidote and quartz, the fractures in this group alternated sealing and re-opening. The fracture characteristics in the B group are follow as: accompanying many alteration halos, long trace length, and cutting off other fractures. These results indicate that fractures in the B group have possibly functioned as pathways for groundwater flow in the long term.

This paper aims to develop a methodology for understanding the fault activity by observing exposed fault planes without covering younger strata. Based on purpose, faults developed in relatively homogeneous rocks such granitic types are investigated as follows; Gosuke Dam upstream outcrop of Gosukebashi Fault and Funasaka-nishi outcrop of Rokkou Fault were selected for the study of an active fault; and K-3 outcrop of Rokkou Houraikyo Fault was chosen for a non-active fault.

The latest highlight is the formation of very volatile hexacarbonyl compound of element 106, Sg(CO). Following this success, second-generation experiments were performed to measure the first bond dissociation energy between the central metal atom and the surrounding ligand. The method using a tubular decomposition reactor was developed and successfully applied to short-lived Mo(CO), W(CO), and Sg(CO).

A tubular flow reactor was tested to decompose the hexacarbonyl complexes and to extract the first bond dissociation energies. A silver was found to be the most appropriate reaction surface to study the decomposition of the group 6 hexacarbonyl. It was found that the surface temperature at which the decomposition occurred was correlated to the first bond dissociation energy of Mo(CO) and W(CO), indicating that the first bond dissociation energy of Sg(CO) could be determined with this technique.

This study examined the geochemical properties and the distribution of mineral spring water, river water and bubbling gas in the Tsuwano Town, Shimane Prefecture, Western Japan. In Tsuwano, high Na-Cl concentration groundwater is discharged with bubbling gas mainly composed of CO. The geochemical properties of mineral spring water, gas, hydrogen-oxygen isotopes and rare gas isotopes suggest that mineral spring water at Tsuwano possibly contains deep-seated fluid. In addition, the largest flux of the deep-seated fluid is found along active fault, suggesting that active fault acts as a path way for fluid upwelling. Furthermore, In Tsuwano, deep-seated fluid discharges along the Lake Ohara-West Yauneyama fault system and surface fracture.

The quartz shows thermal instability and linear modulated optically stimulated luminescence (LM-OSL) analysis revealed the dominance of a slow component. When compared with independent age control provided by two marker tephra, the quartz OSL ages grossly underestimated the depositional age. In contrast, potassium (K)-rich feldspar is a suitable dosimeter when measured using post-IR infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) at 225C, but it was found that the fading corrected ages calculated using dose rates based on sieved grain-size still underestimate. SEM analyses on the feldspar extracts revealed that the grains are amorphous with small crystalline inclusions; using standard internal dose rate parameters, this would result in a too large dose rate. Three different dose rate scenarios were considered for calculation: (1) sieved grain size (90-180m) and 12.50.5% K. (2) smaller grain size (4020m) and measured K concentration (60.5%), and (3) smaller grain size consistent with the observed crystal dimensions (4020m) and 12.50.5% K. The final dose rate scenario produces fading corrected ages that agree well with independent age control.

The short-lived isotopes with high recoil energy directly react with carbon-monoxides and form carbonyl complexes. Only highly volatile complexes were fast transported in a gas stream to counting and chemistry devices. Short-lived Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, W, Re, Os, and Ir were found to form volatile carbonyl complexes, while no volataile complex of Hf and Ta were detected. This technique has been applied to a chemical investigation of the superheavy element Sg (atomic number 106), and will be applicable to various fields of nuclear science with short-lived transition metal isotopes.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signal resetting of quartz grains from modern fluvial sediments (flood and river-bed sediments; four samples in total) were investigated to discuss the applicability of OSL dating for fluvial terrace sediments in Japan. Single aliquot regenerative dose (SAR) protocol was employed to estimate the residual doses of the samples. Residual doses from all samples range from 1.20.3 to 5.93.5 Gy, and the doses can be converted to the OSL age of 6-0.6 ka. We concluded that the OSL dating has the potential to remark the marine isotope stage (MIS) of fluvial terraces at around 100 ka.

In this technique, a hydrophobic membrane is utilized to separate an aqueous phase from the gas phase. With this technique, the dissolution efficiencies of short-lived radionuclides of Mo and W were measured. Yields of more than 80% were observed for short-lived radionuclides at aqueous-phase flow rates of 0.1-0.4 mL/s. The gas flow-rate had no influence on the dissolution efficiency within the studied flow range of 1.0-2.0 L/min. These results show that this technique is applicable for on-line chemical studies of SHEs in the liquid phase.

Nuclear reaction products of short-lived Sg preseparated with a gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS at RIKEN were directly injected into a gas cell filled with He/CO mixture gas, and chemical reaction products of volatile carbonyl complexes were trasported to COMPACT. The Sg carbonyl complex detected with COMPACT was found to be very volatile with adsorption enthalpy of 50 kJ/mol, from which we have concluded that this complex should be a Sg hexacarbonyl Sg(CO). This is the first synthesis of organometallic compounds of transactinide elements for which only simple inorganic comounds have been synthesized so far.

The radionuclide distribution database and map system, which provide basic information for evaluations and countermeasures of the Fukushima nuclear accident, are explained. Due to massive earthquake and tsunami, Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant has been damaged and had spread out radioactive materials around the Fukushima site. It is necessary to collect, analyze, and provide the information of radioactivity correctly and immediately. We developed two providing systems to identify the current distribution of released radionuclides and support decontamination activities.

The HV bushing is a bulk head between insulation gas at 0.6 MPa and vacuum. The FRP ring is required to sustain the pressure load, seismic load and dead weight. Brazing area of the ceramic ring with Kovar is required to maintain vacuum leak tightness and pressure tightness against the air filled at 0.6 MPa. To design the HV bushing satisfying the safety factor of 3.5, mechanical analyses were carried out. As for the FRP ring, it was confirmed that isotropic fiber cloth FRP rings should be used for sufficient strength against shear stress. Also, shape and fixation area of the Kovar sleeve were modified to lower the stress at the joint area. As a result, a design of the insulator for the HV bushing was established satisfying the requirement.
