Evaluation of vortex gas entrainment phenomena

Ito, Kei*; Matsushita, Kentaro; Ezure, Toshiki; Tanaka, Masaaki; Odaira, Naoya*; Ito, Daisuke*; Saito, Yasushi*

Nihon Kikai Gakkai 2025-Nendo Nenji Taikai Koen Rombunshu (Internet), 5 Pages, 2025/09

The estimation of entrained gas flow rate by a bathtub vortex is important in terms of a possibility to causes the performance degradation when the entrained bubbles are mixed into fluid machineries, e.g. pumps. In this study, to confirm the applicability of a model based on circulating annular flow model proposed by the authors, entrained gas flow rate is evaluated using the liquid velocity distribution around free surface dent of vortex (gas core), obtained by CFD data. As a result, it was indicated that it would be possible to evaluate the gas entrainment flow rate by setting an appropriate evaluation region.

Ezure, Toshiki; Matsushita, Kentaro; Sasaki, Keisuke; Tanaka, Masaaki

Dai-29-Kai Doryoku, Enerugi Gijutsu Shimpojiumu Yokoshu (Internet), 5 Pages, 2025/06

In the design of the pool-type demonstration sodium-cooled fast reactor (demonstration reactor), the prevention of gas entrainment in the hot plenum of the reactor vessel is one of important issues to be addressed in the conceptual design of demonstration reactor. Related to this problem, the authors have been developing an evaluation approach combining the analysis method of entrained gas-transport in the primary circuit, SYRENA, and the gas entrainment evaluation method, StreamViewer, at the free surface in the hot plenum of the demonstration reactor. In this study, a development plan of StreamViewer is presented toward application to the evaluation of the demonstration reactor design. Furthermore, an overview of scaled model water experiment of the pool-type demonstration reactor to obtain the validation date for StreamViewer is also presented.

In this study, biogenic Mn(IV) oxide was applied to remove Ra from mine water collected from a U mill tailings pond in the Ningyo-toge center. Just 7.6 mg of biogenic Mn(IV) oxide removed more than 98% of the $$^{226}$$Ra from 3 L of mine water, corresponding to a distribution coefficient of 10$$^{7.4}$$ mL/g for Ra at pH 7. The obtained value was convincingly high for practical application of biogenic Mn(IV) oxide in water treatment.

It is generally known that irradiating a solid surface with a laser pulse of ultra-relativistic intensity generates a plasma on the surface, which in turn creates an ultrahigh pressure inside. In this study, the crystal structure analysis of high-pressure phases generated inside silicon single-crystals irradiated by this laser was performed using the diffraction system at the Stress and Imaging apparatus of BL22XU, which is a JAEA-BL. The results obtained confirm the existence of high-pressure phases that silicon is said to possess: body-centered, rhombohedral, hexagonal, and tetragonal phases in the interior. We can get the results that the crystal structure of silicon polymorphs of being include body-centered, rhombohedral, hexagonal-diamond, tetragonal exists. In the future, we will accumulate data and apply them to control the internal structure, strength, and functionality of materials.

Detailed $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope $$^{28}$$Ne has been performed using the one-neutron removal reaction from $$^{29}$$Ne. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for $$^{28}$$Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N = 20 and N = 28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

CFD-based analysis and experimental study on gas entrainment phenomenon due to free surface vortex

Song, K.*; Ito, Kei*; Ito, Daisuke*; Odaira, Naoya*; Saito, Yasushi*; Matsushita, Kentaro; Ezure, Toshiki; Tanaka, Masaaki

Proceedings of 30th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE30) (Internet), 10 Pages, 2023/05

Gas entrainment (GE) phenomena caused by a free surface vortex may cause the disturbance in core power of sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR). For this reason, the entrained gas flow rate by the GE should be evaluated accurately for the practical safety design of SFRs. In this study, for the purpose of examining the applicability of CFD for the accurate evaluation of GE phenomena, a CFD is applied to the simulation of the free surface vortex and accompanied GE phenomena in a cylindrical vessel with a suction pipe, and the CFD results and the experimental data of the GE are compared. As a result, the CFD and experiments show similar two-phase flow pattern inside the suction pipe, and the shape of the gas core at the free surface is also very similar. Therefore, it is confirmed that the CFD can predict the GE phenomena triggered by a free surface vortex properly and accurately within the acceptable error range.
