We have developed analytical methods for $$^{93}$$Zr, $$^{93}$$Mo, $$^{107}$$Pd and $$^{126}$$Sn, which are considered important in terms of the safety assessment of radioactive waste disposal. The methods are specialized for the wastes left after Fukushima accident. As the main analytical sample, we assumed accumulated water / treated water collected at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. As for $$^{93}$$Zr, $$^{93}$$Mo, $$^{107}$$Pd and $$^{126}$$Sn contained in this accumulated water / treated water, we have worked on the development of separation and purification method of target nuclide and improvement of recovery, and summarized these results in this report.

A large amount of contaminated rubbles were generated by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (F1NPS). For safe decommissioning of F1NPS, it is important to evaluate the composition and concentration of radionuclides in the rubbles. In this paper, to characterize the rubbles collected at F1NPS in Unit-1, Unit-2 and Unit-3, radiochemical analysis was operated. As a result of radiochemical analysis, $$gamma$$-ray-emitting nuclides $$^{60}$$Co, $$^{137}$$Cs and $$^{152,154}$$Eu, $$beta$$-ray-emitting nuclides $$^{3}$$H, $$^{14}$$C, $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{99}$$Tc, and $$alpha$$-particle-emitting nuclides $$^{238,239+240}$$Pu, $$^{241}$$Am and $$^{244}$$Cm were detected. In contrast, $$^{94}$$Nb and $$^{152}$$Eu concentrations were below the detection limit. Measured radioactive concentrations implied that $$^{3}$$H, $$^{14}$$C, $$^{60}$$Co and $$^{90}$$Sr concentrations depended on $$^{137}$$Cs concentration respectively. This analysis was characterized the radioactivity concentrations of the rubbles.

Evaluation of internal stress in short-carbon-fiber reinforced plastics by transmission X-ray diffraction

The internal stress in crystalline thermoplastics, polyphenylene sulphide (PPS), reinforced by carbon fibers of 30 mass% was measured by the diffraction method using synchrotron with energy of 12.3 keV. The stress in the matrix was determined by the sin2psi method with side-inclination optics of transmitted X-ray diffractions. Using skin-layer strips cut parallel, perpendicular and 45 degree to the molding direction of the injection molded plates, the matrix stress was measured under the uniaxial applied stress. The experimental values were at least qualitatively agreed with the prediction derived based on micromechanics. The quantitative difference between experiment and prediction is mainly due to the neglect of the distribution of fiber orientations in the micromechanics prediction. These residual stresses were caused by the mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficient between matrix and fibers.

In this study, based on the simple and rapid analytical method established from the wastes from research facilities, we created analytical schemes which is applicable to rubble and plants collected at Fukushima Daiichi, then transported to Nuclear Science Research Institute of JAEA. We examined the applicability, and confirmed quantifiability of radioactivity concentration with high recovery rate without being affected by fission products such as $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{137}$$Cs.

Development of multi-group neutron activation cross-section library for decommissioning of nuclear facilities

In the safety assessment concerning disposal of radioactive wastes generated in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, it is necessary to evaluate the radionuclide inventory produced by the activation of structured materials. For this purpose, we have to pay much attention to the activation of many impurities irradiated in various neutron spectra depending on their positions and materials. Therefore, accurate activation cross-section data are necessary for many nuclides and reactions. A new multi-group neutron activation cross-section library (MAXS) was developed based on the recent nuclear data JENDL-4.0 and JEFF-3.0/A to apply it to the activation calculations for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The library contains cross-sections and isomeric ratios for many reactions such as (n,$$gamma$$), (n,f), (n,2n), (n,3n), (n,p), (n,$$alpha$$), (n,d), (n,t), (n,n$$alpha$$), (n,np), and so on, for 779 nuclides, in the 199-energy group structure of VITAMIN-B6.

Experiments simulating overheating conditions of fast reactor severe accidents have been previously carried out with irradiated fuels. For the present study, the chemical forms of the fission products (FPs) included in the irradiated fuels were evaluated by thermochemical equilibrium calculations. At temperatures of 2773 K and 2973 K, the most stable forms of Cs, I, Te, Sb, Pd and Ag are gaseous compounds. Cs and Sb detected in the thermal gradient tube (TGT) in the experiments can take gaseous chemical forms of elemental Cs, CsI, Cs$$_{2}$$MoO$$_{4}$$, CsO and elemental Sb, SbO, SbTe, respectively. By comparing experimental results and the estimations, it is seen CsI thermochemically behaves in a manner that traps it in the TGT, while elemental Cs trends to move as fine particles. The moving behavior of the gaseous FPs will obey not only thermochemical principles, but also those of particle dynamics.

Simple and rapid methods to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations are required for the radioactive waste generated from research facilities in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency to dispose of in a near-surface repository. In order to establish the methods to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations of miscellaneous solid waste generated from research and testing reactors, we collected and analyzed samples from miscellaneous solid waste generated by the decommissioning of JPDR (Japan Power Demonstration Reactor). In this report, we reported the analytical data determined in fiscal 2014 ($$^{137}$$Cs and $$^{93}$$Mo) and summarized them with the radioactivity concentrations obtained in the past as basic data to consider the evaluation method of radioactivity concentrations in the stored waste taken from JPDR.

After the severe accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, large amounts of contaminated stagnant water have accumulated in turbine buildings and their surroundings. This rapid communication reports calculation of the radionuclide inventory in the core, collection of measured inventory in the stagnant water, and estimation of radionuclide release ratios from the core to the stagnant water. This evaluation is based on data obtained before June 3, 2011. The release ratios of tritium, iodine, and cesium were several tens of percent, whereas those of strontium and barium were smaller by one or two orders of magnitude. The release ratios in the Fukushima accident were equivalent to those in the TMI-2 accident.

Using a charge density analysis based on synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffraction data, we found that the charge carriers only accumulated in the iron layer of the superconducting phase of LaFeAsO$$_{1-x}$$F$$_{x}$$ at low temperatures. Analysis of the electrostatic potential distribution revealed the concerted enhancement of the electronic polarization of the As ions and the carrier redistribution.

The efficiency of inelastic neutron scattering measurements using a chopper spectrometer can be markedly improved by utilizing multiple incident energies (Multi-Ei method). However, in conventional chopper systems, optimization of the experimental condition for all incident energies is absolutely impossible. We developed a new Fermi chopper with a supermirror-coated slit package in order to overcome the problem and experimentally demonstrated that the full optimization of the experimental condition for multiple incident energies is nearly achieved.

A Si(111) winged crystal has been designed to minimize anticlastic bending and improve sagittal focusing efficiency. The crystal was thin with wide stiffening wings. The length-to-width ratio of the crystal was optimized by finite element analysis, and the optimal value was larger than the "golden value". The analysis showed that the slope error owing to anticlastic bending is less than the Darwin width. The X-rays were focused two-dimensionally using the crystal and a tangentially bent mirror. The observed profiles of the focal spot agreed well with the results of a ray-tracing calculation in the energy range from 8 to 17.5 keV. X-ray diffraction measurements with a high signal-to-noise ratio using this focusing system were demonstrated for a small protein crystal.

Spatial patterns of initiation ages of active faulting in the Japanese Islands

Based on the collection and analysis of existing information, we clarified a spatial distribution of started age of present faulting pattern on active fault in Japanese Islands. The number of active faults which started its activities are gradually increased from about 3 Ma, dramatically increased after 1.5 Ma, and peaked at around 0.5 Ma. After 1.5 Ma, active faults which types of activity or trends are different from previously started active faults are developed. Therefore, there are plural types of active faults in the present tectonic field in Japan. After the peak around 0.5 Ma, newly developed active faults are decreased. It is possibly that newly developed active faults are undetectable; therefore, it is needed to develop new technics for detecting and assessing non-distinguishing active faults.

In this study, water conducting features in Toki granite were defined by the interpretation and integration of geological and hydrogeological data obtained from the borehole investigation in the Phase I of the MIU Project and Regional Hydrogeological Study. Then, the hydrogeological model of Block scale was constructed using hydraulic discrete fracture networks, and equivalent hydraulic conductivities in Block scale were calculated. And, adequacy of equivalent hydraulic conductivities in Block scale was confirmed using result of hydraulic packer tests.
