Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

The near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, the target of Hayabusa2 sample return mission, is believed to be a primitive carbonaceous object. The Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2 acquired reflectance spectra of Ryugu's surface to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micron was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally- and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

At CERN, gas-filled ionization chambers PTW-34031 (PMI) are commonly used in radiation fields including neutrons, protons and $$gamma$$-rays. A response function for each particle is calculated by the radiation transport code FLUKA. To validate a response function to high energy neutrons, benchmark experiments with quasi mono-energetic neutrons have been carried out at RCNP, Osaka University. For neutron irradiation with energies below 200 MeV, very good agreement was found comparing the FLUKA simulations and the measurements. In addition it was found that at proton energies of 250 and 392 MeV, results calculated with neutron sources underestimate the experimental data due to a non-negligible gamma component originating from the target $$^{7}$$Li(p,n)Be reaction.

For hydrogen mitigation, a new type passive autocatalytic recombiner is under developing. This new recombiner has been developed from automotive monolithic catalyst in order to reduce weight and to improve hydrogen treating capacity, environmental resistance and product quality. In this study, activation energy of hydrogen-oxygen recombination reaction was examined to clarify the basic characteristics of the catalyst. In addition, the degradation of the catalyst by $$gamma$$-ray irradiation simulating the environmental condition in nuclear power plants was also examined. As a result, the activation energy was experimentally estimated at 5.75 kJ/mol. Besides, no significant differences were observed in compositional distribution from the EPMA results. On the other hand, specific surface area of the catalyst and surface area of the precious metals were increased. Moreover, catalyst performance test showed that $$gamma$$-ray irradiation up to 1.0 MGy can increase activity of catalyst.

In a severe accident at a nuclear power plant, a large amount of hydrogen can be released to primary containment vessel or reactor building. Passive autocatalytic recombiner (PAR) is one of the most effective systems for hydrogen mitigation and safety accident management. The new type PAR is under developing to improve conventional PARs, especially its size and weight. In this study, the influence of steam coexistence for the automotive catalyst activity was experimentally examined. These results show that the steam slightly affects the reaction start up and catalyst activity.

Preliminary analysis of dipole tracer migration experiments in fractured sedimentary rock at Horonobe URL of Japan

For understanding mass transport mechanism in the rock as natural barrier, ${it in-situ}$ dipole tracer migration experiments were implemented for a fracture in mudstone of Wakkanai Formation at the G.L.-250m gallery of the Horonobe URL, northern Hokkaido, Japan. Results of its preliminary analysis by the analytical solution retrieved from one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation indicate that a fracture surface in mudstone has both reversible and irreversible sorption characteristics for Cs$$^{+}$$ and Sr$$^{2+}$$ but only irreversible that for Co$$^{2+}$$ and Eu$$^{3+}$$.

Investigation and research on depth distribution in soil of radionuclides released by the TEPCO Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

The accident of the TEPCO Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant occurred by the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake on 11 March, 2011. It is estimated that 1.2-1.5$$times$$10$$^{16}$$ Bq for $$^{137}$$Cs and 1.5-1.6$$times$$10$$^{17}$$ Bq for I-131 were released until the beginning of April and those radionuclides (RN) were deposited on soil surface and forest etc. widely around Fukushima Pref. This work was carried out as one of the investigations for making the distribution maps of radiation dose rate and soil contaminated by RNs which the MEXT promotes. The Geoslicer investigation on the depth distribution of RNs in soil was carried out after 3 months from the accident. The investigation was conducted at 11 locations in Nihonmatsu City, Kawamata Town and Namie Town, and soil samples of depth 50 cm to 1 m were taken. Both of $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs were detected in all investigated locations, and $$^{rm 129m}$$Te and $$^{rm 110m}$$Ag were detected only in areas where radiation dose rates are high. At many locations investigated, radiocaesium more than 99% distributed within a depth of 10 cm in soil in the surface layer. On the other hand, RNs tended to distribute to deeper part in soil at locations that are supposed to have been used as farmland than in soil in the surface layer, and radiocaesium more than 99% in soil at locations that are supposed to have been used as farmland also distributed within a depth of around 14 cm. The apparent diffusion coefficients of RNs derived from penetration profiles near the surface layer showed a tendency to be higher in soil at locations that are supposed to have been used as farmland than in soil in the surface layer. The distribution coefficients by a batch method were also obtained for Cs and I, and the relationship between D$$_{rm a}$$ and K$$_{rm d}$$ was discussed.

In this study, we report the O 1$$s$$ and Cu 2$$p$$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) study on the A-site ordered perovskite ACu$$_3$$Ru$$_4$$O$$_{12}$$ (A = Na, Ca, and La). Hartree-Fock calculation and cluster model calculation were carried out to analyze O 1$$s$$ and Cu 2$$p$$ XAS spectra. The O 1$$s$$ RXES spectra indicate that the number of O 2$$p$$ holes increases in going from La to Ca to Na. In addition, the Cu 2$$p$$ RXES spectra reveal that the charge-transfer energy decreases in going from La to Ca to Na.

The Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project is planned to extend over a period 20 years. The investigations will be conducted in three phases, namely "Phase 1: Surface-based investigations", "Phase 2: Construction Phase" (investigations during construction of the underground facilities) and "Phase 3: Operation phase"(research in the underground facilities). This report summarizes the results of the investigations for the 2011 fiscal year (2011/2012). The investigations, which are composed of "Geoscientific research" and "R&D on geological disposal technology", were carried out according to "Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project Investigation Program for the 2011 Fiscal year". The results of these investigations, along with the results which were obtained in other departments of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), are properly offered to the implementations and the safety regulations. For the sake of this, JAEA has proceeded with the project in collaboration with experts from domestic and overseas research organisations.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

Thick target neutron yield at 0 degree by 250 and 350 MeV protons

Neutron energy spectra at 0 degree produced from stopping-length thick graphite, aluminum, iron and lead targets bombarded by 250 MeV and 350 MeV protons were measured at the neutron TOF course at RCNP of Osaka University. The neutron energy spectra were obtained by using the time-of-flight technique in the energy range from 10 MeV to incident proton energy. To compare the experimental results, Monte Carlo calculations by the PHITS and MCNPX codes using the JENDL-HE and the LA150 evaluated nuclear data files were performed. It was found that these calculated results at 0-degree generally underestimated the experimental results for all targets in the energy range above 20 MeV.
