Assessment of nuclear simulation credibility

In the nuclear engineering, simulations are used in radiation, thermal hydraulic, chemical reaction, and structural fields, and the integrated fields thereof, to be applied to the design, construction and operation of nuclear facilities. This article describes brief history of discussion in the AESJ to the publication and introductory explanation of the procedures in the five major elements described in the "Guideline for Credibility Assessment of Nuclear Simulations (AESJ-SC-A008: 2015)". And also, a practical experience of the V&V activity according to the fundamental concept indicated in the Guideline is introduced.

Release behavior of radionuclides from MOX fuels irradiated in a fast reactor during heating tests

In order to obtain the release rate coefficients from fuels for fast reactors (FRs), heating tests and the subsequent analyses of the fission products (FPs) and actinides that are released were carried out using samples of uranium-plutonium mixed oxide (MOX) fuel pellets irradiated at the experimental fast reactor Joyo. Three heating tests targeting temperatures of 2773, 2973 and 3173 K were conducted using an FP release behavior test apparatus equipped with a high-frequency induction furnace and solid FP sampling systems consisting of a thermal gradient tube (TGT) and filters. Irradiated fuel pellets were placed into a tungsten crucible, then loaded into the induction furnace. The temperature was raised continuously at a heating rate of 10 K/s to the targeted temperature and maintained for 500 s in a flowing argon gas atmosphere. The FPs and actinides released from the MOX fuels and deposited in the TGT and filters were quantified by gamma-ray spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis. Based on the analysis, the release rates of radionuclides from MOX fuels for FR were obtained and compared with literature data for light water reactor (LWR) fuels. The release rate coefficients of FPs obtained in this study were found to be similar to or lower than the literature values for LWR fuels. It was also found that the release rate coefficient data for actinides were within the range of variation of literature values for LWR fuels.

Verification and validation (V&V) including uncertainty quantification on modeling and simulation activities has been very much focused on. Due to increase of requirement for standardization of the procedures on the V&V and prediction process to enhance the simulation credibility, "Guideline for Credibility Assessment of Nuclear Simulations (AESJ-SC-A008: 2015)" was published on July 2016 from the AESJ through ten-year discussion. The paper describes brief history of discussion in the AESJ to the publication and introductory explanation of the procedures in the five major elements and one scheme described in the Guideline. And also, a practical experience of the V&V activity according to the fundamental concept indicated in the Guideline is introduced.

Thermoelectric materials for highly efficient devices must satisfy conflicting requirements of high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity. In this paper, we studied the crystal structure and phonon dynamics of tetrahedrites (Cu,Zn)$$_{12}$$(Sb,As)$$_{4}$$S$$_{13}$$. The results revealed that the Cu atoms in a planar coordination are rattling, which effectively scatter phonons. These findings provide a new strategy for the development of highly efficient thermoelectric materials with planar coordination.

The Atomic Energy Society of Japan (AESJ) published "Guideline for Credibility Assessment of Nuclear Simulations 2015" in June, 2016 which specifies the concepts on methodology for the prediction with uncertainty quantification and the quality management based on the concept of verification and validation (V&V) of modeling and simulation. In this report, the outlines of activities in AESJ for publication of the guideline and the expectation for effective implementation of the guideline are described including that of the lectures with major respondents of the questionnaires.

At CERN, gas-filled ionization chambers PTW-34031 (PMI) are commonly used in radiation fields including neutrons, protons and $$gamma$$-rays. A response function for each particle is calculated by the radiation transport code FLUKA. To validate a response function to high energy neutrons, benchmark experiments with quasi mono-energetic neutrons have been carried out at RCNP, Osaka University. For neutron irradiation with energies below 200 MeV, very good agreement was found comparing the FLUKA simulations and the measurements. In addition it was found that at proton energies of 250 and 392 MeV, results calculated with neutron sources underestimate the experimental data due to a non-negligible gamma component originating from the target $$^{7}$$Li(p,n)Be reaction.

Application of neutron stress measurement to reinforced concrete structure

The bond resistance between reinforcing bar (rebar) and concrete is one important parameter for examining integrity of the reinforced concrete structure, and is commonly evaluated by measuring the strain distribution along the rebar embedded in concrete. Here we present two types of applications of the time-of-flight neutron diffraction technique to measure the stress distribution of the rebar. It was demonstrated that bond deterioration around cracks developed in concrete can be evaluated by measuring the stress distribution along the embedded rebar using neutron diffraction. Furthermore, a change in the stress distribution along the rebar due to bond deterioration by corrosion was observed. The neutron diffraction technique is expected to become a novel method for measuring the stress (strain) of the rebar embedded in concrete, and will eventually provide insight into the actual phenomena on the reinforced concrete structures.

Thermal expansion of a Au-Al-Yb intermediate valence quasicrystal

The thermal expansion of a Au-Al-Yb intermediate-valence quasicrystal has been studied by X-ray diffraction measurements. We have found anomalous thermal expansion behavior, namely zero thermal expansion below 50 K. By comparison with an isostructural Au-Al-Tm quasicrystal, the contribution of the Yb valence variation was extracted, and it was shown that its negative thermal expansion component due to the valence shift toward the divalent state by cooling compensated for the positive thermal expansion of the original lattice.

The crystal structure analysis of various polymer substances has been reviewed on the basis of wide-angle high-energy X-ray and neutron diffraction data. The progress in structural analytical techniques of polymer crystals have been reviewed at first. The structural models proposed so far were reinvestigated and new models have been proposed for various kinds of polymer crystals including polyethylene, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(lactic acid) and its stereocomplex etc. The hydrogen atomic positions were also clarified by the quantitative analysis of wide-angle neutron diffraction data, from which the physical properties of polymer crystals have been evaluated theoretically. The bonded electron density distribution has been estimated for a polydiacetylene single crystal on the basis of the so-called X-N method or by the combination of structural information derived from X-ray and neutron diffraction data analysis. Some comments have been added about future developments in the field of structure-property relationship determination.

Drift simulation of tsunami debris in the North Pacific

A drift simulation of tsunami debris flushed out from the Tohoku district, Japan, into the North Pacific due to the tsunami on March 11, 2011, has been conducted to monitor and forecast the drift path over the North Pacific. Results showed that tsunami debris was first transported eastward by the intense Kuroshio Extension and westerly, spreading in the north and south directions by both an energetic ocean eddy and a storm track over the ocean. Tsunami debris with larger windage was transported over the North Pacific by ocean surface wind rather than ocean current and arrived at the west coast of the North American Continent in the fall of 2011. Tsunami debris located near the North American Continent migrated, associated with the basin-scale seasonal change in the atmospheric pressure pattern. Our forecast run suggested that the tsunami debris belt will be formed from the North American Continent in the east to the Philippines in the west.

Intermediate-valence icosahedral Au-Al-Yb quasicrystal

A quasiperiodic, intermediate-valence (IV) system is realized in an icosahedral Au-Al-Yb quasicrystal. X-ray absorption spectroscopy near the Yb $$L$$$$_{3}$$-edge indicates that quasiperiodically arranged Yb ions assume a mean valence of 2.61, between a divalent state (4$$f$$$$^{14}$$, $$J$$ = 0) and a trivalent one (4$$f$$$$^{13}$$, $$J$$ = 7/2). Magnetization measurements demonstrate that the 4$$f$$ holes in this quasicrystal have a localized character. The magnetic susceptibility shows a Curie-Weiss behavior above $$sim$$100 K with an effective magnetic moment of 3.81 $$mu$$$$_{rm B}$$ per Yb. Moreover, a crystalline approximant to this quasicrystal is an IV compound. We propose a heterogeneous IV model for the quasicrystal, whereas the crystalline approximant is most likely a homogeneous IV system. At temperatures below $$sim$$10 K, specific heat and magnetization measurements reveal non-Fermi-liquid behavior in both the quasicrystal and its crystalline approximant without either doping, pressure, or field tuning.

In this study, responses of Bonner sphere spectrometer (BSS) for 245 and 388 MeV neutrons was measured at RCNP, Osaka University. The neutrons are generated in the $$^{7}$$Li(p,n) reaction and its spectra consist of a high-energy peak and a continuum down to the low energy. Therefore, the observed counts of BSS caused by the continuum need to be subtracted. Adjusting a Li target angle and a collimator position, 0 deg and 30 deg component of generated neutron are available. While the 0 deg component contains both the peak and the continuum, the 30 deg component is considered to contain only the continuum. Therefore, the response of the peak is obtained. The spectra were measured using the time-of-flight (TOF) method with a NE213 scintillator.

Consideration on the earthquake-resistant margin of equipment base-bolts receiving the shearing load during seismic movements

In the Niigataken Chuetsu-oki Earthquake on 2007, observed earthquake motion exceeded design base at the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear plant. However, there was no earthquake damage in safety important equipments to stop reactor, to cool reactor, and to contain radioactive materials. One of this reason is said that many safety margin are included in the design and the permissible value. To know more accurate safety margin, shearing force examinations for the base bolts were conducted. In examinations, delegate test-bolts were made; the test bolts were selected from heavier equipment in Tokai Reprocessing Plant. In this report, the shearing strength obtained from the examinations shows more accurate safety margin.
