Oxidation characteristics of lead-alloy coolants in air ingress accident

Kondo, Masatoshi*; Okubo, Nariaki; Irisawa, Eriko; Komatsu, Atsushi; Ishikawa, Norito; Tanaka, Teruya*

The chemical behaviors of lead (Pb) based coolants in the air ingress accident of fast reactors were investigated by means of the thermodynamic considerations and the static oxidation experiments for Pb alloys at various chemical compositions. The results of the static oxidation tests for lead-bismuth (Pb-Bi) alloys indicated that Pb was depleted from the alloy due to the preferential formation of PbO in air at 773K. Pb-Bi oxide and Bi$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ were formed after the enrichment of Bi in the alloys due to the Pb depletion. The oxidation rates of the alloys were much larger than that of the steels, and became larger with higher Pb concentration in the alloys. The compatibility of Pb-Bi alloys with stainless steel was worse when the Pb concentration in the alloys became low, since the dissolution type corrosion was promoted by the Bi composition in the alloy. The Pb-Li alloys were oxidized as they formed Li$$_{2}$$PbO$$_{3}$$ and Li$$_{2}$$CO$$_{3}$$. Then, Li was depleted from the alloy.

Irradiation experiments of 14 MeV neutrons have been performed on a Li block assembly of 46 $$times$$ 51 $$times$$ 51 cm$$^3$$ with a 5 cm thick V-alloy layer inside to examine the accuracy of neutronics calculations for the Li/V-alloy blanket design. Foils of Nb, Ni, In and Au for reaction rate measurements of $$^{93}$$Nb(n,2n)$$^{rm 92m}$$Nb, $$^{58}$$Ni(n,p)$$^{58}$$Co, $$^{115}$$In(n,n')$$^{rm 115m}$$In, $$^{197}$$Au(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{198}$$Au reactions and $$^6$$Li enriched ($$^6$$Li: 95.5%) and $$^7$$Li enriched ($$^7$$Li: 99.9%) Li$$_2$$CO$$_3$$ pellets for tritium production rate measurements were installed in the assembly. Results of the measurements were compared with those of calculations with MCNP5, JENDL-3.3 and JENDL/D-99. The comparisons for the reaction rates in the Nb, Ni and In foils indicate that measurements and calculations of the fast neutron transport are consistent almost within 10%. In the comparison for the reaction rates in the Au foils, the underestimation of 15% was found at a surface of the V-alloy layer. There is a possibility that this is due to the elastic scattering cross section of V around 4 keV as previously reported. The comparisons for tritium production rates in the $$^6$$Li enriched and $$^7$$Li enriched Li$$_2$$CO$$_3$$ pellets indicate that calculated rates were larger than results of the measurements by 2-8% and 1-4%, respectively.

Design activity of International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor clarifies intense neutron streaming from ports for neutral beam injectors. Energy spectrum of the streaming is very wide and 14 MeV neutron and $$gamma$$ ray are the typical radiations. Large amount of glass fiber reinforced plastics will be used in a superconducting magnet system as an electric insulation material and a support structure, for such organic material is easy to manufacture, and light and cheap. In this report, effects of 14 MeV neutron and $$gamma$$ ray irradiation on interlaminar shear strength and fracture mode are investigated using G-10CR small specimen of which configuration was proposed as a standard for evaluation of the interlaminar shear strength.

First principles calculations have been carried out to investigate the core-hole effects on the theoretical fine structures of the X-ray absorption spectra of MgF$$_{2}$$ and ZnF$$_{2}$$ ath FK-edge. Experimental profiles of the near-edge X-ray absorption fine structures are well reproduced by the theoretical calculations when the core-hole effect is introduced. The dependence of supercell size on the theoretical fine structures is also examined.

A fusion device which creates burning plasma will be equipped with a superconducting magnet system to provide strong magnetic field and maintain the burning plasma. The fusion device also will have plasma heating devices such as neutral beam injectors and electron cyclotron systems. Since these systems need several ports to carry in the energy into plasma, the fusion device has large ports connecting to the systems locates in outside of cryostat. Through these ports, D-T neutron will come out of the burning plasma and damage the surrounding materials. The superconducting magnets also will be irradiated by the streaming neutron. To investigate mechanisms of degradation of superconducting properties, and to construct database of irradiation effect on superconducting magnet materials, a cryogenic target system has been install in Fusion Neutronics Source (FNS) at Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The irradiation tests with D-T neutron have been carried out three times and some irradiation effects on superconducting magnet materials are clarified. In this paper, the present status of the cryogenic target system and some irradiation test results will be summarized and presented.
