The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has conducted with the Horonobe Underground Research Project in Horonobe, Teshio-gun, Hokkaido for the purpose of research and development related to geological disposal technology for high-level radioactive wastes in sedimentary soft rocks. The geology around the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (HURL) is composed of the Koetoi diatomaceous mudstone layer and the Wakkanai siliceous layer, both of which contain a large amount of diatom fossils. Since these rocks exhibit relatively high porosity but low permeability, it is important to investigate the poro-elastic characteristics of the rock mass. For this objective, it is necessary to measure parameters based on the poro-elastic theory. However, there are few measurement results of the poro-elastic parameters for the geology around HURL, and the characteristics such as dependence on confining pressure are not clearly understood. One of the reasons is that the rocks show low permeability and the pressure control during testing is difficult. Therefore, a poro-elastic parameter measurement test was conducted on the siliceous mudstone of the Wakkanai formation to accumulate measurement results on the poro-elastic parameters and to examine the dependence of the parameters on confining pressure. As a result, some dependency of the poro-elastic parameters on confining pressure was observed. Among the measured or calculated poro-elastic parameters, the drained bulk modulus increased, while the Skempton's pressure coefficient, and the Biot-Wills coefficient in the elastic region decreased with the increase in confining pressure. The measurement results also inferred that the foliation observed in the rock specimens might impact a degree of dependency of those parameters on confining pressure.

We have revealed the fundamental mechanism of specific Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorption into Prussian blue (PB) in order to develop high-performance PB-based Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorbents in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident. We compared two types of PB nanoparticles with formulae of Fe$$^{III}$$$$_{4}$$[Fe$$^{II}$$(CN)$$_{6}$$]3$$cdot$$xH$$_{2}$$O (x = 10-15) (PB-1) and (NH$$_{4}$$)0.70Fe$$^{III}$$1.10[Fe$$^{II}$$(CN)$$_{6}$$]$$cdot$$1.7H$$_{2}$$O (PB-2) with respect to the Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorption ability. The synthesised PB-1, by a common stoichiometric aqueous reaction between 4Fe$$^{3+}$$ and 3[Fe$$^{II}$$(CN)$$_{6}$$]$$^{4-}$$, showed much more efficient Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorption ability than did the commercially available PB-2.

During the construction of the Horonobe URL shaft, some measurements have been carried out to verify the design and construction method in sedimentary soft-rock. The results obtained from the in-situ measurements at the G.L.-121 m show the unique behavior of surrounding rock masses. This paper reports the result of the numerical simulation of the behavior around the shaft excavation by short step-method. In the analysis using axisymmetric elastic FEM model, construction procedure including the high stiffness lining concrete is accurately followed and the deformation behavior around the shaft is well simulated. Consequently it is found that the excavation release ratio in the short step excavation method is different from one in the typical NATM tunnel excavation.

Information-Technology Based Laboratory (ITBL) project has been propelled as one of e-Japan priority policy programs. The purposes of the project are to share intellectual resources such as remote computers, programs and data in universities and institutes and to support cooperative studies among researchers, building a virtual research environment, ITBL. Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) has been working on installation and management of hardware and development of infrastructure software and applications. As application software, researches on quantum bioinformatics and environmental sciences are carried out. This paper presents utilization of ITBL system infra-structure software for 'Numerical Environment System' which is developed for environmental studies. More effective job executions and visualization are ex-pected by using Task Mapping Editor (TME) and AVS/ITBL, which are tools developed as infrastructure software.

Study on thermal ratchetting of a three bar specimen without primary stress

The thermal stress ratchetting is one of the important failure modes to be prevented in the design of FBR components. To avoid this kind of deformation, the Bree diagram expressed by the combination of primary and secondary stresses has been used in the design of FBR. However, even without primary stress, there is a possibility of ratchetting due to temperature dependence of yield stress when large variations of temperature exist locally. The purpose of this study is to confirm those phenomena by experiment and FEM analysis, and to prove this mechanism by a theoretical model. The following results were obtained. (1) The occurrence of compressive ratchetting deformation was demonstrated by a three bar thermal ratchetting test where the temperature of the central bar was varied cyclically from 20$$^{circ}$$C to 500$$^{circ}$$C. (2) The analysis of the three bar ratchetting test was performed by using the nonlinear cyclic hardening model (Ohno model) installed in FINAS. It is confirmed that the result of analysis represents the experimental ratchetting behavior well. (3) The ratchetting strain per one cycle : $$varepsilon$$$$^{R}$$ of a three bar thermal ratchetting model was derived by using the elastic-perfect plastic model in consideration of temperature dependence of yield stress. [$$varepsilon$$$$^{R}$$=-${$alpha$$Delta$T/2-$sigma$$^{h}_{y}$ /E}$ : the first cycle a)] [$$varepsilon$$$$^{R}$$=-${$alpha$$Delta$T/2-($sigma$$^{h}_{y}$+$sigma$$^{c}_{y}$/E}$ : following cycle b)] $$alpha$$ : thermal expansion ratio, $$Delta$$T : variation of temperature, E : Young's modulas, $$sigma$$$$^{h}_{y}$$, $$sigma$$$$^{c}_{y}$$ ; :yield stress at higher and lower temperature respectively. The ratchetting occurs when the first term of right side is greater than the second term of b) equation. (4) The analytical solution by (3) represents well the initial ratchetting behavior of the test. This type of ratchetting occurs due to the temperature dependence of the yield stress of the material.

We are planning to study a redox behavior of element 106, seaborgium (Sg) based on the comparison of the behaviors with those of molybdenum (Mo) and tungsten (W). In this work, we studied solvent extraction behaviors of Mo(VI), Mo(V), W(VI), and W(V) with Aliquat 336 from hydrochloric acid (HCl). Mo(V) is extracted with higher distribution ratios than those of Mo(VI) in 4 to 11 M HCl. Distribution ratios of Mo(V) obtained by reducing Mo(VI) electrochemically are in good agreement with those of [MoCl$$_5$$].

We carried out solvent extraction of Mo(VI), Mo(V), W(VI) and W(V) in 0.01-0.36 M Aliquat 336 / 0.1-11 M HCl system as model experiments for element 106, seaborgium (Sg). The HCl solutions of Mo(VI), Mo(V), W(VI) and W(V) were prepared using macro amounts of Mo and W. Extraction behaviors of mononuclear Mo and W were also investigated using carrier-free radiotracers $$^{99}$$Mo and $$^{181}$$W, which were produced as $$^{235}$$U(n, f) and $$^{181}$$Ta (p, n) reaction, respectively. The distribution ratios (D) of Mo(V) and W(V) were higher than those of Mo(VI) and W(VI), respectively. These results suggest that reduction behavior of the group-6 elements can be observed by solvent extraction. The D values of carrier-free Mo(VI) and W(VI) are almost the same as those with macro amounts in 6-11 M HCl. This condition would be suitable for the Sg experiments.

We present the extension of the maximum energy of protons from the interaction between the short-pulse compact laser system and solid thin-foil target. The laser pulses with parameters of 800 nm in wavelength, 40 fs of pulse width, 7 J of energy, 10$$^{10}$$ contrast are focused onto the target with the peak intensity of more than 10$$^{21}$$ Wcm$$^{-2}$$, which is also well confirmed by the measured electron temperature of 16 MeV. We report about the acceleration mechanism as well as future prospect on the proton acceleration experiment at JAEA.

In JAEA, the high energy ions generated by the interaction between Ultra-intense Ultra-Short pulse laser and thin-foil target is being studied. Irradiating condition must be optimized to generate higher energy ions while suppress the becoming gigantic of laser. It is necessary to know the physical phenomenon in plasma to determine the parameter to optimize from the information on the electron and neutron, X-rays, which are generated simultaneously with ion. In this study, in order to measure electron temperature accurately, an electron spectrometer was developed which have broad range (1-200 MeV). The detector is comprised of permanent magnets and a fluorescent plate, CCD camera. In the presentation, the result of the calibration experiment carried out using 4, 9, 12, 15 MeV quasi-monoenergetic electron beam in HIBMC will be reported. Moreover, response analysis method was inspected using PHITS which is particle transporting Monte Carlo simulation code, and will also report the result.
