The deformation texture of the high-pressure $$omega$$-phase of pure group IV metals was investigated using neutron diffraction analysis. The $$<$$0001$$>$$$$omega$$ direction gradually aligned to the shear direction with an increase in the shear strain introduced by the high-pressure torsion process. The deformation texture suggested that the main slip system of the $$omega$$-phase was {11-20}$$<$$0001$$>$$$$omega$$. We experimentally observed the orientation relationships of the mechanically stabilized $$omega$$-phase with respect to the reverse-transformed $$alpha$$-phase, and determined that the relationship was similar to that proposed by Silcock and Rabinkin.

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a powerful tool to characterize magnetic microstructure. In this talk, the characterization of the magnetic microstructure in pure iron is reported. Using SANS, the magnetic properties and origin of the magnetic microstructure are discussed.

Heterogeneous nano-structures and specific mechanical properties of heavily cold-rolled stainless steels

Heavy cold rolling can develop unique mixed structures with nano-lamellar, shear bands and mechanical nano-twins in various kinds of stainless steels. In particular, "eye-shaped" twin domains developed in $$gamma$$ phase are a main feature of the mixed structures. The heavily cold rolled stainless steels possessed a high tensile strength over 1.5 GPa as well as a ductility of 10%. The strength increased to 2.0 GPa by ageing. This indicates that the heavily cold rolling can produce excellent structural materials having high strength and ductility.
