X-Ray Lasers 2010; Springer Proceedings in Physics, Vol.136, p.15 - 24, 2011/12

This paper reviews recent improvement in the source development of laser-driven X-ray lasers and the applications in the research fields of material science, laser processing, X-ray imaging, and radiation damage in biological cells. In the application for material science, we have firstly observed temporal correlation between the domain structures of ferro-electric substance under the Curie temperature. In the laser processing, new X-ray laser interferometer reveals us the nano-scale surface distortion of substance pumped by a femto-second optical pulse. In the X-ray diffraction image, we have taken several static images of micro-structure of samples: now we are trying to extend the objective to nano-scale dynamics using pump and probe method. In the radiation damage of biological cells, we observed double strand break in DNA using X-ray laser exposure; this results are compared with the case using incoherent several KeV X-ray exposure.

Grain boundary character of cracks observed in IASCC and IGSCC

Miwa, Yukio; Kaji, Yoshiyuki; Tsukada, Takashi; Kato, Yoshiaki; Tomita, Takeshi; Nagata, Nobuaki*; Dozaki, Koji*; Takiguchi, Hideki*

Proceedings of 13th International Conference on Environmental Degradation of Materials in Nuclear Power Systems (CD-ROM), 14 Pages, 2007/00

Grain boundary (GB) character of cracks observed in irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) and in intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) was examined using the orientation imaging microscope (OIM). IASCC were produced by constant load tests with 1/4T-CT specimens for pre-irradiated (1.8 dpa at 546 K) type 304 stainless steel. The tests for pre-irradiated specimens were performed by the post irradiation SCC test or the in-reactor SCC test at the Japan Materials Testing Reactor. In all specimens, cracks propagated mainly along random grain boundaries (GBs), and small amount of cracks propagated along low angle GBs ($$Sigma$$ 1), twin GBs ($$Sigma$$ 3) and coincidence site lattice (CSL) GBs ($$Sigma$$ 5-27). Fraction of the GB character was compared with the author's previous studies in which the fraction of IGSCC in thermally-sensitized type 304 stainless steel and unirradiated type 316L stainless steel were measured on CT specimens and a BWR shroud sample. The relationship between SCC behavior and the GB character was discussed. It was considered that the difference of the fraction of GB character between IASCC and IGSCC related to the deformation mode of irradiated stainless steel such as dislocation channelling.

The dependence of helium production on radiation-hardening and -embrittlement has been examined in a reduced-activation martensitic F82H steel doped with $$^{10}$$B, $$^{11}$$B and $$^{10}$$B+$$^{11}$$B irradiated at 250$$^{circ}$$C to 2.2 dpa. The total amounts of doping boron were about 60 massppm. The range of He concentration produced in the specimens was from about 5 to about 300 appm. Tensile and fracture toughness tests were performed after neutron irradiation. 50 MeV-He$$^{2+}$$ irradiation was also performed to implant about 85 appm He atoms at 120$$^{circ}$$C by AVF cyclotron to 0.03 dpa, and small punch testing was performed to obtain DBTT. Radiation-hardening of the neutron-irradiated specimens increased slightly with increasing He production. The 100 MPam$$^{1/2}$$ DBTT for the F82H+$$^{11}$$B, F82H+$$^{10}$$B+$$^{11}$$B, and F82H+$$^{10}$$B were 40, 110, and 155$$^{circ}$$C, respectively. The shifts of DBTT due to He production were evaluated as about 70$$^{circ}$$C by 150 appmHe and 115$$^{circ}$$C by 300 appmHe. The DBTT shift in the small punch testing was evaluated as 50$$^{circ}$$C.

Fabrication of Sphere-pac Fuel and Vipac Fuel for Irradiation Tests (Collaboration Project among JNC, PSI and NRG)

Saikuru Kiko Giho, (24), p.1 - 10, 2004/00

JNC has carried out the joint research project with PSI in Switzerland and NRG in Netherlands. In this project, three types of fuel segments (sphere-pac segments, vipac segments and pellet segments) were fabricated by PSI. They have been irradiated under same irradiation condition to compare their performances in the High Flux Reactor. This report describes the fabrication of sphere-pac segments and vipac segments for irradiation tests.
