A continuous counter-current extraction for the selective recovery of thorium (Th) and uranium (U) from the Yen Phu (Vietnam) rare earth concentrate leach solutions was systematically studied. The primary amine N1923 was used as an extractant which was prepared in the isoparaffin IP-2028 diluent. Thorium and uranium were selectively recovered in a hydrometallurgical circuit established by continuous mixer-settler extraction, scrubbing, and back-extraction at the laboratory scale. The desired purity of Th and U can be achieved by managing the volume ratio of organic to aqueous phase (O/A ratio) in the corresponding steps. Highly pure Th and U were recovered from the pregnant back-extraction liquor and the raffinate, respectively, which have satisfactory properties for further processing of the subsequent nuclear materials.

An approximate model for a single fluid 3D MHD equilibrium with pure isothermal toroidal flow with imposed nested magnetic flux surfaces is proposed. It recovers the rigorous toroidal rotation equilibrium description in the axisymmetric limit. The approximation is valid under conditions of nearly rigid or vanishing toroidal rotation in regions with 3D deformation of the equilibrium flux surfaces. Bifurcated helical core equilibrium simulations of long-lived modes in the MAST device demonstrate that the magnetic structure is only weakly affected by the flow but that the 3D pressure distortion is important. The pressure is displaced away from the major axis and therefore is not as noticeably helically deformed as the toroidal magnetic flux under the subsonic flow conditions. Fast particle confinement is investigated with the VENUS code. In the presence of toroidal flow, the drift orbit equations depend on the electrostatic potential associated with the rotation and quasineutrality at lowest order in Larmor radius. When the equilibrium has 3D deformations, geometrical terms appear from the evaluation of Ohm's Law that considerably complicates the description of fast particle confinement.

An approximate model for a single fluid three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium with pure isothermal toroidal flow with imposed nested magnetic flux surfaces is proposed. It recovers the rigorous toroidal rotation equilibrium description in the axisymmetric limit. The approximation is valid under conditions of nearly rigid or vanishing toroidal rotation in regions with significant 3D deformation of the equilibrium flux surfaces. Bifurcated helical core equilibrium simulations of long-lived modes in the MAST device demonstrate that the magnetic structure is only weakly affected by the flow but that the 3D pressure distortion is important. The pressure is displaced away from the major axis and therefore is not as noticeably helically deformed as the toroidal magnetic flux under the subsonic flow conditions measured in the experiment.

Since the EDA 2001, Design of Electron Cyclotron Heating and Current Drive (ECH&CD) System have been modified due to progress of physics understanding and change of interface. Nominal RF power 20 MW is injected by four upper launchers or one equatorial launcher. RF beams are steered by a front steering mirror. DCHV power supply will be composed of IGBT pulse step modulators because of high frequency modulation and design flexibility to three different types of 170 GHz gyrotrons from three parties. The RF power is transmitted by 63.5 mm dia corrugated waveguide and switched by a waveguide switch between the upper launcher and the equatorial launcher. A start-up system for initial discharge is composed of three 127.5 GHz gyrotrons and dedicated DCHV power supply. Three of transmission lines are shared between 170 GHz and 127.5 GHz gyrotrons to inject start-up RF beam through the equatorial launcher. R&Ds for high power long pulse have been on-going to obtain a reliable ITER ECH&CD system.

A global plasma turbulence simulation code, ORB5, is presented. A particular feature is the use of straight-field-line magnetic coordinates and a field-aligned Fourier filtering technique that dramatically improves the performance of the code in terms of both the numerical noise reduction and the maximum time step allowed. Another feature is the capability to treat arbitrary axisymmetric ideal MHD equilibrium configurations. The code is validated against an analytical theory of zonal flows and against other codes for a selection of linear and nonlinear tests.

Poly(L-lactic acid), PLA was irradiated using electron beams (EB) in the presence of polyfunctional monomers (PFM) as crosslinking agent. Among the PFMs, triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) at 3% concentration was found to be the most effective for crosslinking of PLA by irradiation technique. The crosslinked PLA obtained has heat resistance higher than 200$$^{circ}$$C. From this fact, the crosslinked PLA is applied on heat-shrinkable tube, cup and plate. The shrinkable tube has several advantages such as high heat resistance and transparency. It is therefore proven that crosslinking technology is beneficial to expanding the application of PLA.

This paper reviews the present status of recent first principles based plasma turbulence simulations, and gives quantitative discussions on influences of the v// nonlinearlity and the geometry effects in the gyrokinetic Poisson equaiton, which are ignored in the conventional approximations, on simulations results. Careful treatments of these effects enable turbulence simulations satisfying the conservation of the energy and the particle number. The new simulation disclosed new phenomena, and it is found that (1) turbulence spreading is induced by avalanche like phnemena consisting of bursty heat transport and local flattening of pressure profiles, and (2) nonlinearly driven E$$times$$B flows become global shear flows with scale lengths of about 30 ion gyro radii.

The global nonlinear electrostatic PIC code ORB5 solves the gyrokinetic Vlasov-Poisson system assuming adiabatic electrons in realistic tokamak magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria. The present version of ORB5 shows remarkable particle and energy conservation properties and can be used for physics studies in toroidal geometry. In particular, the optimized tracer loading method has been adapted to tokamak geometry and implemented in ORB5 together with a new adaptive gyro-average algorithm. Basic physical conservation properties (energy and particle number) are used as indicators of the quality of the numerical simulations. In this paper we present the first nonlinear results of electrostatic collisionless microinstabilities of realistic MHD shaped equilibria, provided by the MHD equilibrium code CHEASE, including the toroidicity induced geometrical coupling of the zonal ExB flow and the parallel velocity nonlinearlity.
