The preservation techniques of safety research on "Monju" and the next generation Fast Breeder Reactors have been exhibited. The exhibition consists of (1) EMAT, (2) ECT, (3) Laser Processing Head. Both (1) and (2) are the checking techniques for the cracks on nuclear power plants, while (3) is the repairing technique for the heat exchanger. In 2009, these three techniques will have been integrated to be a new probing system. The hybrid optical fiber has been involved in (3), which the project "photo-Medical Valley in JAEA-KANSAI are now developing as a fiber surgery device.

Proton and heavy ion cancer therapy which are without surgerical operation are now paid attention to. In this therapy, no surgerical operation is needed, nor the patients have treatment without pain. However, the machine for the therapy is very large in both cost and size. At this moment, the institutions where the patients can be treated by this therapy are only 6 in Japan. In JAEA, we are now carrying out the investigation to make this machine for the therapy compact in size and costs by using high intensity laser.

Radiation is used in various industrial fields. Cancer accounts for 30% of the cause of death in Japan and the number of cancer patients also increases every year. On the other hand, cancer treatment technology is also in rapid progress and developed. X ray, ray, particle beam (proton and carbon) and BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) are used for cancer treatment. HIBMC (Hyogo Ion Beam Medical Center) at Tatsuno-city is only one particle beam cancer treatment facility in the Kansai area. The number of the particle beam cancer treatment facilities which are being constructed is 2 in Osaka and 1 in Kyoto. The latest cancer treatment technology of radiation use is introduced.
