Times Cited Count:3 Percentile:17(Materials Science, Ceramics)Pulsed electric current sintering of molybdenum trioxide (MoO) was carried out by one- and two-step pressuring methods for fabrication of irradiation target using production of Mo and Tc nuclear medicine. At 550C by the two-step pressurizing method, a relative density of 93.1% was obtained while, by the one-step pressurization method, the relative density was 76.9%. Direct sample temperature measurements were conducted by inserting a thermocouple in a punch. By the two-step pressurizing method, the sample temperature was higher than that by the one-step pressurizing method even almost the same die temperature. From voltage and current waveforms, it was thought that the conductivity of the sample increased by the two-step pressurizing method to increase the sample temperature and the relative density. The two-step pressurization method enables us to prepare dense targets at a low temperature from recycled and coarse-grained Mo enriched MoO powder.

The bond resistance between reinforcing bar (rebar) and concrete is one important parameter for examining integrity of the reinforced concrete structure, and is commonly evaluated by measuring the strain distribution along the rebar embedded in concrete. Here we present two types of applications of the time-of-flight neutron diffraction technique to measure the stress distribution of the rebar. It was demonstrated that bond deterioration around cracks developed in concrete can be evaluated by measuring the stress distribution along the embedded rebar using neutron diffraction. Furthermore, a change in the stress distribution along the rebar due to bond deterioration by corrosion was observed. The neutron diffraction technique is expected to become a novel method for measuring the stress (strain) of the rebar embedded in concrete, and will eventually provide insight into the actual phenomena on the reinforced concrete structures.

The Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR) has been utilized for the various neutron irradiation tests of fuels and materials, as well as for radioisotope production since achieving the first criticality in March 1968. The operation of JMTR was halted for the refurbishment in August 2006. The new JMTR is expected to contribute to many fields: the lifetime extension of LWRs and the expansion of industry use. To meet a wide range of users' needs, the development of new irradiation technologies has been carried out for the new JMTR. This report summarizes the present conditions of the development of FP gas pressure gauges, multi-paired thermocouples, ECP and ceramics sensors.

This report describes the results of the conceptual design study of the SlimCS fusion DEMO reactor aiming at demonstrating fusion power production in a plant scale and allowing to assess the economic prospects of a fusion power plant. The design study has focused on a compact and low aspect ratio tokamak reactor concept with a reduced-sized central solenoid, which is novel compared with previous tokamak reactor concept such as SSTR (Steady State Tokamak Reactor). The reactor has the main parameters of a major radius of 5.5 m, aspect ratio of 2.6, elongation of 2.0, normalized beta of 4.3, fusion out put of 2.95 GW and average neutron wall load of 3 MW/m. This report covers various aspects of design study including systemic design, physics design, torus configuration, blanket, superconducting magnet, maintenance and building, which were carried out increase the engineering feasibility of the concept.

For the breeder material, the chemical stability of LiTiO has been improved by LiO additives. In order to analyze the pebble bed behaviour, thermo-mechanical properties of the LiTiO pebble bed has been experimentally obtained. In order to verify nuclear properties of the pebble bed, the activation foil method has been proposed and a preliminary experiment has been conducted. For the tritium behaviour, the chemical densified coating method has been well developed and tritium recovery system has been modified taking account of the design change of the TBM.

This report is described for the development of nicrosil-nisil type multi-paired thermocouple which was usable at over 1000 degrees under the neutron irradiation environment. Developed nicrosil-nisil type multi-paired thermocouple has maximum 7 hot junctions in axial direction in a sheath. Though the design, trial production and out-pile tests, its productivity and electric performances were confirmed, and the production method was established.

Distinctive features of the concept is low aspect ratio ( = 2.6) and use of a reduced-size center solenoid (CS) which has a function of plasma shaping rather than poloidal flux supply. The reduced-size CS enables us to introduce a thin toroidal field (TF) coil system which contributes to reducing the weight and construction cost of the reactor. SlimCS is as compact as advanced commercial reactor designs such as ARIES-RS and produces 1 GWe in spite of moderate requirements for plasma parameters. Merits of low-, i.e. vertical stability for high elongation and high beta limit are responsible for such reasonable physics requirements.

Times Cited Count:16 Percentile:72.04(Instruments & Instrumentation)Structural modification and primary precipitates in the ZrAlNiCu alloy films (50-100 m thickness) caused by radiation with 300-500 keV H, Ag, Cu and Au ions has been studied. The results of XRD indicated that a metastable primary phase was formed in the alloy by the heat treatment after ion irradiation, but no difference was observed just after the ion irradiation at room temperature. Furthermore, higher incident Au ion fluence effectively suppressed thermal precipitation of the ZrNi type crystalline phase in the alloy. The deposited energy dependence of the precipitation behavior indicated an increase of the nucleation sites by the implanted metal atoms, simultaneously with a decrease of the growth rate by higher energy deposition density.

Image Points are defined through geometry of sources, receivers and reflectors. IP (Image Point) transform is one type of Radon transform which change common shot section to IP domain (r-x). By the IP transform, reflection signals in time domain can be accumulated and enhanced in IP domain. We applied the IP transform to the field data of RVSP that had been carried out at the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) site. We could get the fault image around the MIU site using IP transform.

It is known that 3-D Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) method has an advantage on imaging the fault and fracture zone near the borehole, especially steeply dipped structure. Cosma et al (2003) has developed the new technique named Image Point Transform (IP Transform) and applied to offset VSP data to improve the week reflection signals from the steeply dipped fracture. We test the applicability of this method to the 3-D Reverse VSP data of numerical simulation and develop the method of imaging named spectral operator of middle point of IP. In the results of applying to 3-D model of steeply dipped fracture, we know that this method is applicable to 3-D reverse VSP data and could get the good image of fracture reconstructed by spectral operator of middle point of IP.
