A concept of a plutonium burner HTGR named as Clean Burn, which has a high nuclear proliferation resistance, had been proposed by Japan Atomic Energy Agency. In addition to the high nuclear proliferation resistance, in order to enhance the safety, we propose to introduce PuO-YSZ TRISO fuel with ZrC coating to the Clean Burn. In this study, we conduct fabrication tests aiming to establish the basic technologies for fabrication of PuO
-YSZ TRISO fuel with ZrC coating. Additionally, we conduct a quantitative evaluation of the security for the safety, a design of the fuel and the reactor core, and a safety evaluation for the Clean Burn to confirm the feasibility. This study is conducted by The University of Tokyo, Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., and Nuclear Fuel Industries, Ltd. It was started in FY2014 and will be completed in FY2017, and the first year of the implementation was on schedule.

Simple and rapid methods to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations are required for the radioactive waste generated from research facilities in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency to dispose of in a near-surface repository. In order to establish the methods to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations of miscellaneous solid waste generated from research and testing reactors, we collected and analyzed samples from miscellaneous solid waste generated by the decommissioning of JPDR (Japan Power Demonstration Reactor). Mo) and summarized them with the radioactivity concentrations obtained in the past as basic data to consider the evaluation method of radioactivity concentrations in the stored waste taken from JPDR.

An imaging plate has been used as a useful detector of energetic electrons in laser electron acceleration and laser fusion studies. The absolute sensitivity of an imaging plate was calibrated at 1 GeV electron energy using the injector Linac of SPring-8. The sensitivity curve obtained up to 100 MeV in a previous study was extended successfully to GeV range.

Times Cited Count:33 Percentile:87.06(Instruments & Instrumentation)An optical device called a multichannel collimator (MCC) was developed to rapidly perform an angle-dispersive diffraction using a multi-anvil press (MAP) with synchrotron radiation. The MCC consists of multiple channels of collimators in a radial alignment. This eliminates diffraction from the materials surrounding the sample so that we can obtain high-quality diffraction from samples in a MAP using an imaging plate. We have installed a MCC system on a MAP named MAX90 at the Photon Factory, National Laboratory for High Energy Physics. Performance of the MCC has been satisfactorily evaluated, and diffraction patterns of liquid sodium and liquid gallium under 4.8 GPahave been succesfully obtained using this system.
