A Novel method for processing noisy magnetotelluric data based on independence of signal sources and continuity of response functions

A number of schemes for processing magnetotelluric (MT) data have been reported aiming at suppressing the strong effect of artificial electromagnetic noise, especially coherent noise that is correlated between electric and magnetic time series. Many of the recent denoising schemes are based on decomposing MT data into the responses of the natural signal and noise. Meanwhile, it is crucial to distinguish the natural signal from noise stably without depending on any empirical choice of parameter setting. In addition, improper subtraction of values from the separated signal can lead to the loss of useful values of the natural signal or missing noise-affected values, which may result in failure in deriving the true MT responses. We propose a novel data-processing method that applies frequency-domain independent component analysis (FDICA) to both the local MT data and the reference magnetic data. Among the separated signal, the proposed method can quantitatively distinguish the natural signal from the noise-affected components by calculating the ratio of cross-power spectrum with the reference data to the auto-power spectrum for each component. When determining which values to subtract from the separated signal, we introduce an evaluation index with respect to two characteristics of the MT response function: stationary in the time domain and smoothness in the frequency domain. We conduct the experiments both with MT time series severely contaminated by synthetic coherent noises and with MT field data interfered with DC (direct current) railways. Consequently, we confirm the superiority of the proposed method in the noise-suppression performance over the conventional methods of MT data processing.

A Proposal of optimum calculation settings of continuous wavelet transform in magnetotelluric data processing

In the magnetotelluric (MT) method, so as to identify the subsurface resistivity structure, the apparent resistivity and phase profiles are calculated by transforming time-series data into spectral data. The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is well known as a new method of time-frequency analysis instead of the short-time Fourier transform. The CWT is superior in processing non-stationary wideband signals like the MT signal by adjusting the size of the wavelet according to the value of frequency. However, the calculation settings of the CWT, such as the type of basis function and the wavelet parameter, are often determined empirically because of the arbitrariness of the shape of the wavelet. Although there might be differences between the calculated MT responses and the true responses due to improper settings of the CWT, there are no detailed studies considering the effect of numerical errors derived from spectral transforms on MT data. In this study, focusing on the frequency band between 0.001 Hz and 1 Hz, we examined the optimum calculation settings of the CWT in processing MT data in terms of suppressing the numerical errors caused by the spectral transform of time-series data. We also show the validity of the proposed calculation settings by applying the CWT to MT survey data of different types. Superiority of the CWT with proposed settings is suggested especially when the signal-to-noise ratio of observed data is low. Consequently, the proposed calculation settings were confirmed to strike a balance between the resolutions of the time and frequency domains well and will therefore be effective in obtaining reliable MT responses.

The influences of pH and the concentrations of Eu$$^{3+}$$ and NaNO$$_{3}$$ on the sorption of Eu$$^{3+}$$ to Na-montmorillonite were investigated through batch sorption measurements and time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS). The pH had a little effect on the distribution coefficients (Kd) in 0.01 M NaNO$$_{3}$$, whereas the Kd strongly depended on pH at 1 M NaNO$$_{3}$$. A cation exchange model combined with a one-site non-electrostatic surface complexation model was successfully applied to the measured Kd. The TRLFS spectra of Eu$$^{3+}$$ sorbed were processed by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), which corresponded to one outer-sphere (factor A) and two inner-sphere (factor B and C) complexes. It turned out that factors A and B correspond to Eu$$^{3+}$$ sorbed by ion exchange sites and inner-sphere complexation with hydroxyl groups of the edge faces, respectively. Factor C became dominant at relatively high pH and ionic strength and likely correspond to the precipitation of Eu(OH)$$_{3}$$ on the surface.

The dominant issue for the the modification program of JT-60 (JT-60SC) is to demonstrate the steady state reactor relevant plasma operation. Physics design on plasma parameters, operation scenarios, and the plasma control method are investigated for the achievement of high-$$beta$$. Engineering design and the R&D on the superconducting magnet coils, radiation shield, and vacuum vessel are performed. Recent progress in such physics and technology developments is presented.

The influence of pH, ionic strength, and the concentrations of Eu$$^{3+}$$ and nitrate salts on the sorption of Eu$$^{3+}$$ on Na-montmorillonite was investigated by batch sorption measurements. The distribution coefficient (Kd) indicated that the cation exchange reaction is significant in pH 4-7 at low ionic strength, and the formation of surface complexation is related to the pH dependence of Kd at high ionic strength. The Eu$$^{3+}$$ surface species were investigated using time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). The PARAFAC modeling indicated two surface species, the outer-sphere (factor A) and inner-sphere (factor B) Eu$$^{3+}$$ complexes. Factor B was dominant at high pH and ionic strength, which was determined to be a Eu colloidal species formed at high Eu$$^{3+}$$ concentrations. A cation exchange model combined with a one-site non-electrostatic surface complexation model was applied to the measured Kd data, using the results of the TRLFS-PARAFAC analyses.

We have investigated incorporation of $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{137}$$Cs in teeth of cattle and otoliths of fish. Specific activity of $$^{90}$$Sr in the dentin tissue was higher than that in the enamel tissue. The result shows change of $$^{90}$$Sr incorporation in cattle even within a tooth. Concentrations of stable Sr and Cs were 94 ppm and 3 ppb. Distributions of stable Sr and Cs were uniform in the otolith of fish. If distribution of $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{137}$$Cs in the otolith was measured, change of $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{137}$$Cs incorporation into the fish would be found. These findings suggest that distribution patterns of $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{137}$$Cs in the environment could be estimated from distribution of the radionuclides in the tooth and otolith.

We summarized the results of small-scale tests conducted at Tokyo Tech, Tohoku Univ. and JAEA, and will report the results of evaluating damage behavior of lower plenum by metal debris during severe accident. Molten Zr concentration contributed to the reactivity with the structure and to the reaction with oxide debris during the formation of the molten metal pool. Although Zr concentration tends to decrease due to various reactions, there is a possibility that metal debris with low oxygen concentration might form a molten pool at the pedestal. If the metal debris would have a high zirconium concentration, it might cause a eutectic reaction with the structural materials. In contrast, if Zr concentration would be low, the reaction with the structural material could be limited, and thermal damage and creep damage due to temperature rise are considered to be dominant.
