It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has conducted a monthly monitoring of airborne C discharge at the forth research building (RI facility) of the Tokai Research and Development Center. In the current monitoring,
C, which exists in various chemical forms in airborne effluent, is converted into
CO
with CuO catalyst and then collected using monoethanolamine (MEA) as CO
absorbent. However, this collection method has some issues on safety management because the CuO catalyst requires a high heating temperature (600
C) to ensure a high oxidation efficiency and the MEA is specified as a poisonous and deleterious substance. To establish a safer, manageable and reliable method for monitoring airborne
C discharge, we examined collection methods that use different CO
absorbents (MEA and Carbo-Sorb E) and oxidation catalysts (CuO, Pt/Alumina and Pd/ZrO
). The results showed 100% CO
collection efficiency of MEA during a 30-day sampling period under the condition tested. In contrast, Carbo-Sorb E was found to be unsuitable for the monthly-long CO
collection because of its high volatile nature. Among the oxidation catalysts, the Pd/ZrO
showed the highest oxidation efficiency for CH
at a lower temperature.

In TVF, concentrated high radioactive liquid waste produced in TRP has been vitrified since 1995. Because of very corrosive condition of melting glass, design life of a melter is limited five years and it requires interruption of plant operation and generation of high radioactive solid waste for melter change. To improve this situation, prolongation of melter design life time by increasing corrosion resistance of structural material is required strongly. Effective removal of noble metal from a melter is also required because accumulated noble metal cause shortening lifetime of a melter. So, JAEA tried to develop a melter which equipped with ability of high corrosion resistance and control temperature distribution for noble metal easy drain out. Mechanical removal technology of remained noble metal rich glass also used if necessary. Low temperature glassing technology and advance removal of noble metal from concentrated high radioactive liquid are also be studying.

Tokai Vitrification Facility (TVF) started hot operation in 1996 and produced 241 canisters as of June 2007. Through TVF operation, JAEA had much experience and accumulated much technical know-how which indicated that management for noble metal accumulation in a melter was key technology for smooth plant operation. JAEA should continue service operation based on a vitrification contract with the Japanese utilities because there remains about two third of High Active Liquid Waste (HALW) produced in the reprocessing service operation of Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP). TVF melter is designed in condition of five years life time because of very corrosive characteristic of melted glass. Five years design life time is equivalent to 500 canisters production in TVF. Because estimated number of canisters which will be produced in the future is over 500 canisters, exchange of the present melter is necessary. From these situations, JAEA decided basic strategy to increase stability of the existing melter operation and develop an advanced new melter for replacement in future which has largely prolonged life time and high noble metal drain ability. To attain these targets, JAEA extracted necessary key technologies to assemble into a ten years road map and started development. This development has been progressing on schedule.

Times Cited Count:28 Percentile:68.23(Physics, Applied)A large linearly graded structure on atomic-scale up to 88 at%/mm with oriented grown crystals was formed in selenium-tellurium (Se-Te) semiconductor using a strong gravitational field of 1 million G level at 260 C. The lattice constants and the binding energies of Se and Te 3
electrons continuously changed along the direction of gravity accordingly, which indicated the formation of the graded band gap structure. The grown crystals showed the crystalline orientation with c-axis of hexagonal structure roughly perpendicular to the direction of gravity. It was found that the diffusion coefficient of sedimentation was larger than that of normal diffusion by more than 100 times, which suggested a different diffusion mechanism from the normal vacancy mechanism.

After the experiments, the graded structures were obtained. Pb-rich phase (f.c.c) and In-rich phase (tetragonal) appeared at the strong- and weak-gravitational field sides of the sample, respectively, from starting state of -phase. And, the continuous changes in lattice parameters were observed in each phase. These observation results showed that the graded structure was continuous in atomic scale, and was formed by the sedimentation of atoms. Composition profiles of the centrifuged samples for 31.3 h, 60 h and 150 h showed that the composition change reached the steady state within 60 hours. The diffusion coefficient for sedimentation was estimated to be about 8 times larger than that for usual diffusion by the simulation. The result indicated that the diffusion mechanism of the sedimentation was different from the conventional ones.

around the weak gravitational field region of the sample. These results showed that sedimentation of substitutional solute atoms occurred, and induced the structure change in intermetallic compounds.

JAERI has studied on design and operation of a nuclear powered submersible research vessel, which will navigate under sea in the Arctic Ocean, as a part of the design study of advanced marine reactors. This report describes operation conditions and an operating system of the vessel those were discussed by the specialists of hull design, sound positioning, ship motions and oceanography, etc. The design conditions on ship motions for submersible vessels were surveyed considering regulations in our country, and ship motions were evaluated assuming the observation activities in the Arctic Ocean. A submarine transponder system and an on ice communication buoy system were examined as a positioning and communication system supposing the activity under ice. Procedures to secure safety of nuclear powered submersible research vessel were discussed based on the investigation of accidents. These results were reflected to the concept of the nuclear powered submersible research vessel, and subjects fto be settled in the next step were clarified.
