Since 2010, IAEA has held the NEM School to develop future leaders who plan and manage nuclear energy utilization in their county. Since 2012, JAEA together with Japan Nuclear HRD Network, University of Tokyo, Japan Atomic Industrial Forum and JAIF International Cooperation Center have cohosted the school in Japan in cooperation with IAEA. Since then, the school has been held in Japan every year. In 2006, Japanese nuclear technology and experience, such as lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, were provided to offer a unique opportunity for the participants to learn about particular cases in Japan. Through the school, we contributed to the internationalization of Japanese young nuclear professionals, development of nuclear human resource of other countries including nuclear newcomers, and enhanced cooperative relationship with IAEA. Additionally, collaborative relationship within the network was strengthened by organizing the school in Japan.

Prolonged stoppage of research reactors and critical assemblies affects human resource development

All the research reactors and critical assemblies (hereinafter RRCAs) in Japan are stopped in order to fulfil the new regulatory requirements, which were reinforced after the accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. These RRCAs have played important roles in the areas of human resource development, academic research, medical and industrial application of nuclear technology. Prolonged stoppage of RRCAs affects adversely those activities. Atomic Energy Society of Japan set up a group to discuss this issue. The group has shown a proposal that the roles of the RRCAs, which are indispensable facilities to nuclear human resource development, should be placed positively in the energy policy and the science and technology policy of the country.

Molecular dynamics simulation of telomeric single-stranded DNA and POT1

We performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of telomeric single-stranded DNA and POT1 for 100 ns. The distance between $$C_alpha$$ (POT1) and O5' (telomeric ssDNA) is calculated to verify the binding system for 100 ns MD. We then calculated the distance between the bases of telomeric DNA ends and the root mean square deviation and gyration radius in single and binding states. We compared the root mean square fluctuations between single and binding states and calculated the number of hydrogen bonds between POT1 and telomeric DNA. There are many hydrogen bonds between Gln94 and the first guanine of the closest TTAGGG sequence in telomeric single-stranded DNA. These Gln94 and the guanine have a large difference in root mean square fluctuation between single and binding states. We found that Gln94 and guanine are important components of the binding system, and they are related to its stability.

We choose nuclear data and nuclear material inspection for energy application and nondestructive testing of explosive and hidden nuclear materials for security application. 90 keV electrostatic accelerators of deuterium are commercially available for nondestructive testing. For nuclear data measurement, electrostatic ion accelerators and L-band and S-band electron linear accelerators (linac) are used for the neutron source. Compact or mobile X-band electron linac neutron sources are under development. Compact proton linac neutron source is used for nondestructive testing especially water in solids. Several efforts for more neutron intensity using proton and deuteron accelerators are also introduced.

JAEA together with the Japan Nuclear Human Resource Development Network (JN-HRD Net), the University of Tokyo (UT) and the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) cohosted the IAEA-Nuclear Energy Management School in Tokai Village, aiming that Japan will be the center of nuclear HRD in the Asian region. In the school, not only lectures by IAEA experts, but also lectures by Japanese experts and technical visits were included for foreign participants. The school contributed to the internationalization of Japanese young professionals, development of nuclear human resource of other countries, and enhancement of cooperation between IAEA and Japan. Additionally, collaborative relationship within JN-HRD Net was strengthened by the school. In this report, findings obtained during the preparatory work and the school period are reported for future international nuclear HRD activities in Japan.

Future bearing inspection system using portable linac X-ray source

We have developed an X-ray source using portable X-band (9.3-12 GHz) linear accelerator (linac) for bearing real-time inspection. This system can generate pulsed-X-ray, therefore if X-ray repetition rate synchronizes with bearing rotation rate, we can get still images without stopping rotation. We succeeded in static imaging of rotating equipment. We start to develop more advanced X-ray generators using portable linac and multi-beam klystron (MBK). The advanced systems use higher electron energy linac and MBK as more stable radio-frequency (RF) source. We used 950 keV linac and 250 kW magnetron for X-ray imaging. For the purpose of more stable operation and compactness of the system, we propose a multi-beam klystron (MBK) as its RF power source. In this paper, we show the basic parameters of the system which stability is tolerable for bearing condition based maintenance (CBM) in near future.

Measurement of emittance for electron bunches compressed by velocity bunching via double-slit-scan method

We report the availability of velocity bunching in an energy recovery linac (ERL) by a numerical analysis, and the plan of precise measurement of bunching emittance via a double-slit-scan method. The simulation performed for eight TESLA-type cavities reveals successful bunch compression from 3.2 ps to 0.17 ps. Since the residual energy spread after velocity bunching is considerably smaller than the correlated energy spread required for magnetic compression through a recirculation loop, velocity bunching is useful to realized short-pulse and high-brightness X-rays by ERL. The emittance of velocity bunching was calculated to be 1.5 $$pi$$mm.mrad for the bunch charge of 77pC without the emittance compensation by an external solenoid field. Although the emittance growth due to the space-charge effect was small in the simulation, it is necessary to evaluate the emittance-growth mechanism under velocity bunching. Therefore, the emittance measurement via double-slit-scan method is carrying out in the UTNL-18L.

We represent an experimental verification of a bunch compression method named "velocity bunching". The velocity bunching based on the rectilinear compression uses a traveling wave accelerating tube as a compressor. The experiment was performed by an S-band photoinjector and a linac at Nuclear Engineering Research Laboratory, University of Tokyo. The shot-by-shot bunch length was measured to be 0.5 $$pm$$ 0.1 ps (rms) in average by the femtosecond streak camera for a bunch charge of 1 nC. The experimental result is in good agreement with PARMELA simulations.

Effects of radiation damping on charged particle motion in the field of a strong electromagnetic wave

By focusing petawatt class lasers to very small spot sizes the amount of radiation emitted by electrons can become very large. Resultingly, the damping of the electron motion by the emission of this radiation can become large. It has been found that in the radiation damping regime of the laser pulse-plasma interaction a substantial portion of the laser pulse energy is converted into very short wavelength electromagnetic radiation. Even in the relatively low intensity limit, radiation damping may play an important role. In order to study this problem a code is written to solve a set of equations describing the evolution of a strong electromagnetic wave interacting with plasma. These equations include the effect of radiation damping. The equations are finite differenced and solved on a uniform grid in one spatial dimension. The difference in the laser pulse and plasma electron dynamics will be studied in both regimes of low damping and high damping.

Radiation damping effects on the interaction of ultraintense laser pulses with an overdense plasma

A strong effect of radiation damping on the interaction of an ultra-intense laser pulse with an overdense plasma slab is found and studied via a relativistic particle-in-cell simulation including ionization. Hot electrons generated by the irradiation of a laser pulse with a radiance of $$Ilambda^2>10^{22}$$W$$mu$$m$$^2$$/cm$$^2$$ and duration of 20 fs can convert more than 35% of the laser energy to radiation. This incoherent X-ray emission lasts for only the pulse duration and can be intense. The radiation efficiency is shown to increase nonlinearly with laser intensity. Similar to cyclotron radiation, the radiation damping may restrain the maximal energy of relativistic electrons in ultra-intense-laser-produced plasmas.
