Transient ionization of the mesosphere was detected at around 65 km altitude during the isolated auroral expansion occurred at 2221-2226 UT on June 30, 2017. A general-purpose Monte Carlo particle transport code PHITS suggested that significant ionization is possible in the middle atmosphere due to auroral X-rays from the auroral electrons of $$<$$10 keV.

Interactions between a relativistic-intensity laser pulse and a cone-wire target are studied by changing the focusing point of the pulse. The pulse, when focused on the sidewall of the cone, produced superthermal electrons with an energy $$>$$10 MeV, whereas less energetic electrons $$sim$$1 MeV were produced by the pulse when focused on the cone tip. Efficient heating of the wire was indicated by significant neutron signals observed when the pulse was focused on the tip. Particle-in-cell simulation results show reduced heating of the wire due to energetic electrons produced by specularly reflected light at the sidewall.

We produced cylindrically imploded plasmas, which have the same density-radius product of the imploded plasma $$rho$$R with the compressed core in the fast ignition experiment and demonstrated efficient fast heating of cylindrically imploded plasmas with an ultraintense laser light. The coupling efficiency from the laser to the imploded column was 14%-21%, implying strong collimation of energetic electrons over a distance of 300 micron of the plasma. Particle-in-cell simulation shows confinement of the energetic electrons by self-generated magnetic and electrostatic fields excited along the imploded plasmas, and the efficient fast heating in the compressed region.

The development on synthesis of sorbent was carried out to separate the platinum group species such as Ru, Rh and Pd in high-level radioactive liquid waste. After sorption test using developed sorbents, the spherical porous silica impregnated aluminium ferrocyanide was effective to sorb the species of Ru and Pd in the nitric solution. This sorption effect remained stable when tested on actual high-level radioactive liquid waste. It was found that more treated waste could be loaded into the borosilicate glass than untreated waste.
