We have been developing a ultraprecision focusing supermirror combining the ion-beam sputtering method and the numarically-controlled local wet etching techniques. In this contribution, focusing of a wide-band neutron beam (3.5 $AA $sim$$) is demonstrated with a 1-dimensional elliptic supermirror.

We have started designing a polarized neutron reflectometer which is mainly aimed at magnetic samples and can be used for any non-free interfaces. In order for GISANS measurements and measuring small samples, we are developing focusing neutron supermirrors which have large critical angles and are coated on precisely figured aspheric surfaces. For the implementation neutron supermirrors with high reflectivity ($$Rsim80$$%) at a large critical angle ($$q_csim$$0.88 ${AA}$) have been developed and ultra-high precision aspheric surfaces have been figured on synthesized quartz glass with numerically controlled local wet etching. In this contribution, design concept of the J-PARC polarized neutron reflectomter will be presented together with test measurements of a prototype focusing supermirror.

A focusing neutron supermirror has been developed for 1-dimensional focusing of wide-band neutron beam. The surface figure is elliptic along the long side of the mirror which is 400 mm in length and 100 mm in width. Focusing experiments demonstrated the focal size of 0.20 mm and peak intensity gain of 52 for wide-band neutrons of $$lambda$$ $$>$$ 3.5 ${AA}$

Neutron polarizing supermirrors need to display high polarization efficiencies at low external magnetic fields. The Fe/Si/Ge/Si multilayer, obtained by adding thin interlayers of Si to an Fe/Ge multilayer, is effective in reducing the external field strength necessary to achieve efficient neutron polarization. To gain insight into the mechanism that controls the required external field strength for a neutron polarizing supermirror, we investigated the magnetic and mechanical properties of Fe/Si, Fe/Ge, and Fe/Si/Ge/Si multilayers. The required external field strength was found to be proportional to the compressive film stress. The compressive stress of the Fe/Si/Ge/Si multilayer was much smaller than those of Fe/Si and Fe/Ge multilayers, respectively. These measurements and analyses showed that a reduction in the compressive film stress in the Fe/Si/Ge/Si multilayer permits the use of a lower external field strength to achieve efficient neutron polarization.

We have been developing focusing supermirrors by depositing a supermirror on a precisely figured aspheric surface. Surface of a quartz substrate is figured using the "numerically-controlled local wet etching" technique. The figured surface shows a figure error of less than 1 micrometer p-v and an RMS roughness of less than 0.2 nm. Deposition of NiC/Ti supermirror (m=4) with ion beam sputtering keeps the figure error within several micrometers p-v and the roughness almost unchanged. A one-dimensional elliptical supermirror of 400mm in length was developed and it successfully achieved focused peak width (FWHM) of 0.128 mm and peak intensity 52 times that of unfocused (divergent) beam. We also tried two-dimensional focusing using two (vertical and lateral) focusing mirrors in a Kirkpatric-Baez configuration and successfully focused the beam to a spot of 0.5 mm in diameter.
