The near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, the target of Hayabusa2 sample return mission, is believed to be a primitive carbonaceous object. The Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2 acquired reflectance spectra of Ryugu's surface to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micron was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally- and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and post-closure performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, based on some examples of developing method of hydro-geological structure model, acquired knowledge are arranged using the tree diagram, and model uncertainty and its influence on the evaluation items were discussed. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the developed approach for "defining conditions" has been reevaluated and improved from practical viewpoints. In addition, the uncertainty evaluation for the effect of use of cementitious material, as well as glass dissolution model, was conducted with analytical evaluation. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, based on survey of precedent procedures, multiple-approach for distribution coefficient of rocks was established, and the adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to sedimentary rock and granitic rock. Besides, an approach for solubility setting was developed including the procedure of selection of solubility limiting solid phase. The adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to key radionuclides.

Following FY2011, JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the existing approach has been improved in terms of a practical task, and applied and tested for near field focusing on the buffer. In addition, the uncertainty of some important processes and its impact on safety functions are discussed though analysis. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, the approaches for parameter setting have been developed for sorption for rocks and solubility, and applied and tested through parameter setting exercises for key radionuclides.

(2) Study on development of scenario: the existing approach has been embodied, in addition, the phenomenological understanding regarding dissolution of and nuclide release from vitrified waste, corrosion of the overpack, long-term performance of the buffer are summarized. (3) Study on setting nuclide migration parameters: the approach for parameter setting has been improved for sorption and diffusion coefficient of buffer/rock, and applied and tested for parameter setting of key radionuclides. (4) Study on ensuring quality of knowledge: framework for ensuring quality of knowledge has been studied and examined aimed at the likely disposal facility condition.

As the Japanese deep geological disposal programme prepares for milestones at which volunteer sites need to be compared, it is critical that any supporting post-closure safety assessment is done as realistically as possible. Because of the subtle system understanding needed to integrate diverse theoretical, laboratory, field and analogue models, data and observations into the high-level parameters that are incorporated into performance assessment models, normal QA procedures tend to fail completely. This problem is discussed further in this paper and solutions outlined, which build on recent developments of supporting knowledge engineering tools.

The Research Hot Laboratory (RHL) in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) had been contributed to R&D program for fuels and nuclear materials in or out of JAEA. However, the decommissioning work of RHL has been started on April 2003 as the rationalization program for decrepit facilities in former Tokai institute. This work will be progressing, dismantling the lead cells and decontamination of concrete caves then release in the regulation of controlled area. The partial area of RHL will be used for the central storage of un- irradiated fuel and for temporary storage of radioactive device generated by J-PARC. The 18 lead cells had been dismantled and the preparing work for remained 20 lead cells has been finished including the removal of the applause from the cells, survey of the contamination revel in the lead cells and prediction of radio active waste. The future plan of decommissioning work has been prepared to incarnate the basic vision and dismantling procedure.

Most of the metal or bed material wastes generated from uranium enrichment facilities or uranium refining and conversion plants are contaminated by uranium fluoride compounds such as UF. The UF powder was completely dissolved in BMICl(1-buthyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride). The uranium concentrations of metal waste dropped below the temporary proposed clearance level (1.0 Bq/g) using BMICl. In the cyclic voltammogram of BMICl solution when dissolving UF, uncoupled reduction and oxidation peaks were observed and the reduction peak was considered to correspond to the reduction of uranyl(VI) + e uranyl(V) followed by further reduction to UO.

Devil's flower has been found in a temperature-pressure phase diagram of NaVO, which shows a charge disproportionation (CD) at ambient pressure. By a complementary use of an X-ray structural analysis and a resonant X-ray diffraction, which is sensitive to CD, we have investigated the structural relationship between two ground states appeared in lower and higher pressure regions including the charge arrangements. It has been clarified that two equivalent types of charge arrangement in CD correspond to the Ising variable in NaVO. The atomic shifts are regarded as linearly coupled to the Ising spins. The results lead us to the conclusion that it is the first time that the devil's flower blooms in a charge-disproportionation system. The results also lead us to a hypothesis that the competitive interactions between a Ising spins may result from the Ising spin-phonon coupling.

Structural relations between two ground states of the ANNNI (Axial Next Nearest Neighbor Ising) compound NaVO, C- and C-phases below and above the transition pressure = 1 GPa, were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scattering techniques. The structure of the C-phase is well explained by the () pattern which is one of four layers () of the C-phase, however, the amount of the atomic shifts under the conditions 1.6 GPa and 6 K is 27% that under ambient pressure. On the other hand, resonant X-ray scattering showed that the charges are disproportionated under high pressure. Based on these facts, it was concluded that charge disproportionation corresponds to the Ising variable in NaVO, where the atomic shifts are regarded as linearly coupled to the Ising spins. These results lead to the hypothesis that the competitive interactions between the Ising spins may result from the Ising spin-phonon coupling.

The turbo molecular pump which can be operated exposed to high radiation has been developing at JAERI and Osaka Vacuum Ltd., because it is planed to use this turbo molecular pump for the 3GeV-RCS of the J-PARC project. The goal of irradiation dose is 30 MGy because the cumulative energy dose due to radiation is approximately estimated to be on the order of 100 MGy for 30 years of the 3GeV-RCS operation. In order to know radiation damage of turbo molecular pump, gamma-ray irradiation experiment has been performed at JAERI. The turbo molecular pump could operate properly less than 3.5 MGy absorption dose under gamma-ray irradiation environment. Since the elongation of elastomer vacuum seals became small due to exposed to radiation, this radiation damage of elastomer seals causes leak. The turbo molecular pump components except the elasomer seals, for example motor coil, control sensor, and etc, have kept high performance more than 7 MGy absorption dose. The turbo molecular pump without elastomer seals has been developed and the irradiation test will be started form April.

It has been believed for a long time that the metal-to-insulator (MI) transition of BaVS is not accompanied by any spatial order of spin and lattice. We have carried out x-ray diffraction measurements of BaVS single crystals using laboratory x-ray source as well as synchrotron radiation, and found that superlatiice reflections which double the lattice constant c exist below the transition temperature. The most porbable space group at the low-temperature insulator phase contains two in equivalent vanadium sites and thus a charge disproportionation of the vnadium ions is considered as the main cause of the MI transition.
