Level structures of $$^{56,58}$$Ca cast doubt on a doubly magic $$^{60}$$Ca

Gamma decays were observed in $$^{56}$$Ca and $$^{58}$$Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from $$^{57,59}$$Sc. For $$^{56}$$Ca, a $$gamma$$ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for $$^{58}$$Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the $$2^{+}_{1} rightarrow 0^{+}_{gs}$$ decays. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for $$2^{+}_{1}$$ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the N = 34 shell. Its constituents, the $$0_{f5/2}$$ and $$0_{g9/2}$$ orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic $$^{60}$$Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to $$^{70}$$Ca or even beyond.

Charge generated in 6H-SiC n$$^{+}$$p diodes by MeV range heavy ions

Charge induced in n$$^{+}$$p Silicon Carbide (6H-SiC) diodes by heavy ions, oxygen (O), silicon (Si), nickel (Ni), and gold (Au) using a Transient Ion Beam Induced Current (TIBIC) measurement system. The slight increase in collected charge shows in a low bias region, and then, the values are saturated in a high bias region. This indicates that in the low bias region, since the length of the depletion layer is shorter than the ion range, carriers induced in deeper than the depletion layer diffuse and annihilate before they reach the depletion layer. Since the length of the depletion layer increases with increasing bias voltage, the charge collected by diodes increases with increasing bias voltage. In the case of the high bias, the length of the depletion layer is longer than the ion range. As a result, all carriers are induced in the depletion layer, and they can be collected by the electric field. Thus, This indicates that the value of collected charge does not depend on bias voltage. From the point of view of charge collection efficiency (CCE), the collected charge decrease with increasing atomic number. From the calculation, it is found that dense electron-hole pairs were generated in SiC by irradiation of ions with heavy mass. The decrease in the CCE due to ion irradiation with heavy mass can be interpreted in terms of the annihilation of e-h pairs in plasma due to the Auger recombination.

We report on the event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($$A_{LL}$$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured $$A_{LL}$$ = -0.0014 $$pm$$ 0.0037 at the lowest $$P_T$$ bin and -0.0181 $$pm$$ 0.0282 at the highest $$P_T$$ bin. The measured $$A_{LL}$$ is compared with the predictions that assume various $$Delta G(x)$$ distributions.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of $$K^0_s$$, $$omega$$, $$eta'$$ and $$phi$$ mesons in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, $$n$$ and $$T$$, determining the high $$p_T$$ and characterizing the low $$p_T$$ regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Gas measurements by $$gamma$$ spectroscopy in the MEGAwatt PIlot Experiment (MEGAPIE) project has led to the determination of main radioactive isotopes released by the LBE. Comparison with calculations performed with several validated codes supplies important volatile elements release fraction estimation in a spallation target. In addition, calculations with MCNPX2.5.0, FLUKA and SNT codes coupled with evolution programs have been performed in order to study the activation of the target and structural materials. The induced database is relevant for safety and radioprotection during operation, for the post-irradiation experiments and for target dismantlement.
