Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:9.59(Physics, Condensed Matter)To examine the detailed structure of low-energy magnetic excitations in a high-transition-temperature superconducting cuprate with heavily hole-doping, we performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments on LaSrCuO. We observed clear dispersion relations of the previously reported incommensurate (IC) magnetic correlations at = (0.5 , 0.5)/(0.5, 0.5 ). In addition, we show the emergence of continuum magnetic excitations with a ring shape centered at point in a constant energy spectrum at = 50 K. The radius of the ring ( = 0.109) is smaller than the incommensurability ( = 0.118). This suggests that the origin of the ring-like excitations is different from that of the IC magnetic correlations, and the low-energy magnetic excitations of the LaSrCuO system are inherently composed of these two kinds of excitations.

Our results address the long-term concern of dopant introduced local lattice inhomogeneity, and show that the associated nanometer scale lattice deformation is marginal and cannot be responsible for the patched variation in the spectral gaps observed with scanning tunneling microscopy in the cuprates.

JAEA-Review 2016-018, 84 Pages, 2016/08
The Materials and Life Science Division in J-PARC Center has been conducting "JAEA Project Researches", which consists of a several research projects utilizing neutron scattering instruments developed by JAEA in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility. Among the research projects, the project "Structure and electronic properties of functional materials" has been conducted in 2012-2014, and the project "the study of spin-lattice dynamics in superconductors" has started since 2015. On March 22-23, 2016, a joint workshop for these two projects was held at the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University. This report compiles the presentation materials and abstracts shown in the above-mentioned workshop.

Neutron scattering cross-section by matter includes nuclear scattering and magnetic scattering. By using polarized neutrons, one can distinguish these two components and can obtain information of magnetic moment and spin arrangements. In addition, one can get details of complicated magnetic structure, such as a helical spin structure. In this article, neutron scattering techniques using triple axis spectrometers are reviewed.
