The JAEA-AMS-TONO facility at the Tono Geoscience Center, JAEA has an accelerator mass spectrometer (JAEA-AMS-TONO-5MV). The spectrometer enabled us to use a multi-nuclide AMS of carbon-14 ($$^{14}$$C), beryllium-10, aluminium-26 and iodine-129, and we have recently been proceeding test measurement of chlorine-36. In response to an increase of samples, we installed a state-of-the-art multi-nuclide AMS with a 300 kV Tandetron accelerator in 2020. Recently, we are driving the development of techniques of isobar separation in AMS and of sample preparation. Ion channeling is applied to remove isobaric interference and we are building a prototype AMS based on this technique for downsizing of AMS. The small sample graphitization for $$^{14}$$C has been attempted using an automated graphitization equipment equipped with an elemental analyzer.

In the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, the purpose of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) is to accelerate a 1 MW, high-intensity proton beam. To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

Various radioactive wastes have been generated from Chemical Processing Facility for basic research on advanced reactor fuel reprocessing, radioactive waste disposal, and nuclear fuel cycle technology. Many types of reagents have been used for the experiments, and some troublesome materials were produced in the course of experiments. The radioactive liquid wastes were treated for stable and safe storage using decomposition, solvent extraction, precipitation, and solidification methods. In this study, current status of harmless treatment for the radioactive liquid wastes would be reported.

Observation of Eu adsorption band in the CMPO/SiO$$_{2}$$-P column by neutron resonance absorption imaging

Neutron resonance absorption imaging was adapted to observe the Eu band adsorbed in the CMPO/SiO$$_{2}$$-P column for minor actinide recovery by extraction chromatography. Several wet columns were prepared by either light water or heavy water and compared with the dry column to evaluate the neutron transmission. The neutron transmission spectra showed that 45% was transmitted through the dry column while 20% and 40% were transmitted through the wet columns of light water and heavy water, respectively. The results indicated that heavy water is more applicable than light water to observe the Eu adsorption band in the CMPO/SiO$$_{2}$$-P column.

To clarify the existence of cation vacancies in Ce-doped Gd$$_{3}$$Al$$_{2}$$Ga$$_{3}$$O$$_{12}$$ (Ce:GAGG) scintillators, we performed gamma-ray-induced positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (GiPALS). GiPAL spectra of GAGG and Ce:GAGG comprised two exponential decay components, which were assigned to positron annihilation at bulk and defect states. By an analogy with Ce:Y$$_{3}$$Al$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$, the defect-related component was attributed to Al/Ga-O divacancy complexes. This component was weaker for Ce, Mg:GAGG, which correlated with the suppression of shallow electron traps responsible for phosphorescence. Oxygen vacancies were charge compensators for Al/Ga vacancies. The lifetime of the defect-related component was significantly changed by Mg co-doping. This was understood by considering aggregates of Mg$$^{2+}$$ ions at Al/Ga sites with oxygen vacancies, which resulted in the formation of vacancy clusters.

This study demonstrates, for the first time, the principle of nuclear transmutation of minor actinide (MA) by the accelerator-driven system (ADS) through the injection of high-energy neutrons into the subcritical core at the Kyoto University Critical Assembly. The main objective of the experiments is to confirm fission reactions of neptunium-237 ($$^{237}$$Np) and americium-241 ($$^{241}$$Am), and capture reactions of $$^{237}$$Np. Subcritical irradiation of $$^{237}$$Np and $$^{241}$$Am foils is conducted in a hard spectrum core with the use of the back-to-back fission chamber that obtains simultaneously two signals from specially installed test ($$^{237}$$Np or $$^{241}$$Am) and reference (uranium-235) foils. The first nuclear transmutation of $$^{237}$$Np and $$^{241}$$Am by ADS soundly implemented by combining the subcritical core and the 100 MeV proton accelerator, and the use of a lead-bismuth target, is conclusively demonstrated through the experimental results of fission and capture reaction events.

Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for $$^{107}$$Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

Analysis on adsorbent for spent solvent treatment by micro-PIXE and EXAFS

The spent PUREX solvent containing U and Pu is generated from the reprocessing process of spent nuclear fuel. The nuclear material removal is important for the safe storage or disposal of the spent solvent. Our previous study revealed that the adsorbent with the iminodiacetic acid (IDA) functional group is one of the most promising materials for designing the nuclear material recovery process. Accordingly, an IDA-type adsorbent was synthesized by using graft polymerization technology or a chemical reaction to improve the adsorption rate and capacity. The synthesized IDA-type adsorbent was characterized by micro particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses. The micro-PIXE analysis revealed that Zr was adsorbed on the whole synthesized adsorbents and quantified the microamount of adsorbed Zr. Moreover, EXAFS suggested that Zr in the aqueous solution and solvent can be trapped by the IDA group with different mechanisms.

Numerical simulation of natural circulation experiment under asymmetric cooldown using LSTF

When coolant in one of the secondary side of steam generator (SG) is lost under some accident condition, the NC in the loop with the affected SG may terminate. Hence, the experiment was done in order to discuss the behavior of the natural circulation flow when the secondary side of the intact SG was depressurized stepwisely and that of the affected SG was empty of coolant. In this paper, we analyzed this NC experiment using the LSTF by the TRACE code. The objective of this analysis is to clarify the sensitivity of the code to the NC behavior. The calculated mass flow rate in the intact loop was slightly underestimated compared with the experimental result. On the other hand, the calculated mass flow rate in the affected loop was overestimated compared with the experimental result. In addition, we did the sensitivity analysis of the NC behavior in the case that the cooldown rate was changed.

Analyses of LSTF experiment and PWR plant for 5% cold-leg break loss of coolant accident

The analyses of LSTF experiment and PWR plant for 5% cold-leg break LOCA are performed using the RELAP5/MOD3.3 code. The discharge coefficient of critical flow model is determined so as to obtain the agreement of pressure transient between the LSTF experiment and the experimental analysis, and used for the PWR analysis. The characteristics of thermal-hydraulic phenomena in the experiment are shown to be simulated well by the two analyses. The decrease in core differential pressure during the loop-seal clearing is, however, underestimated by the two analyses, and the core heat up is not predicted. The loop flow rates are also underestimated by the two analyses. Although the duration of core heat up during the boil-off period is longer in the experimental analysis, the results of two analyses agree well, and the effect of scaling is found to be small between the experimental analysis and the PWR analysis.

The advantage of SiO$$_{2}$$/AlON stacked gate dielectrics over SiO$$_{2}$$, AlON and Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ single dielectric layers was demonstrated. Our systematic research revealed that the optimized stacked structure with 3.3-nm-thick AlON interlayer is beneficial in terms of superior interface quality, reduced gate leakage current and C-V hysteresis for next-generation high frequency and high power AlGaN/GaN MOS-HFETs.
